This week author Jennifer Rardin is my guest on Amberkatze's Book Blog! Her series featuring Jaz Parks is gearing up for it's sixth installment, Bite Marks, in Autumn but right now the first three books just came out in mass market form in the US! The new release of the third book in the series, Biting The Bullet, even has a never before published story called "Golem Hunt" inside! Which means it would be really cool to win a signed copy? Wouldn't it? ;)

Check out the guest blog and then enter the contest!

-------------

Jaz Origins

I guess you could say she’s been a nagging voice in the back of my head for years. And if you know anything about Jaz, you’ll understand why I finally had to let her have her say. It wasn’t easy to give her a Voice, though. When I began writing my first vampire novel, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, I figured it would be about, you know, vampires. But that’s only part of the equation. The bigger factor is a sassy redhead who happens to assassinate enemies of the State for a living. Well, nobody’s perfect. And that’s why we love her.

Jaz began to take form in 2003. I’d just finished my third novel and was considering what to write next. My husband convinced me to stop worrying about what would sell, what other people might want to read, and just write something I loved. Vamp lit. was (and is) a passion of mine, so I caved and decided, just this once, to take the selfish route. I was working part-time as a grant-writer, so the only time I had to put the story together was at night, before I went to sleep. Since the PCs were downstairs and I didn’t own a laptop and the time, I ended up writing the whole book in longhand on three spiral notebooks. Two years and approximately ten revisions later I’d come to the point where I couldn’t think of one more way to make the story better. So I began pitching the book to agents. Another year passed and finally a Californian named Laurie McNeal called me one gorgeous spring afternoon to let me know she loved the manuscript and to ask me how serious I was about writing. Was I dabbling or did I want to make a career of it? She understood when I told her I’d been working toward this goal my entire adult life and couldn’t stop writing even if I tried. Less than four months later she’d sold the book to a new Sci-Fi/Fantasy imprint of Hachette Book Group called Orbit.

And that was when the real work began. My editor took me through probably ten more revisions before we were both happy with the result. And then she asked for book two—in four months! She explained that if Orbit could release the first three books in three successive months it would help build readership much faster. Because often when people read a book and like it, they go right back to the store for the sequel. So I wrote it. I worked pretty much constantly, and thank God my family supported me through that time or I never could have made it. Taking breaks only for meals and necessary chores, writing nights and weekends, I put together Another One Bites the Dust and Biting the Bullet in record time. My proudest moment was when my editor told me she had so few changes to recommend on book three that she was considering sending it straight to the proofreader.

However this is not a pace I’d suggest anyone try for long. I began to burn out, as evidenced by the fact that Bitten to Death was incredibly tough to write. I had to drag myself to the laptop. Writing didn’t appeal. I wasn’t quite as interested in what my characters were up to. This was also the time when my daughter had moved to college, and we were both having a tough time adjusting to the change. Luckily we both turned out to be resilient girls, much like Jaz, and as I began to recover from the overload, the joy returned. Every book I write now feels like the best one yet.

But I’m still learning all the time how to be a better writer. Every story I read or watch on the big/small screen teaches me something about plot, characterization, and scene setting. And I listen closely to my editor’s suggestions. Not just because she’s a good reader, but because she’s an excellent teacher, and I believe one day she will put me in the right place to be a bestselling author. Of course, to do that, I’m going to have to write kickass stories. I don’t think it’ll be a problem. Especially when I have Jaz around to do the kicking!

Anna Strong is a newly turned vampire who has been thrown into her new way of life in the hardest of ways. Her new abilities are coming in useful for her job as bounty hunter and she enjoying herself more than ever. However she is also trying to keep a low profile and have a quiet life. After all her life is now alot longer.

So with her partner out of town and her family abroad, Anna is busy staying out of vampire type problems. That is until some young vampires turn up dead, completely drained of blood. Of course Anna wants to say no to Williams when he asks for her help but she, and he, knows she can't. Although after everything she goes through to find out who is killing the girls and why, she is going to wish she had stayed away from the whole thing.

Retribution is the fifth book in the Anna Strong Vampire Novels and the series just keeps impressing me. Anna is one of the first vampires I came to know and love in this genre and each time a new book comes out it is like catching up with an old friend. Anna is the kind of vampire I would love to be. She is clever, pretty and kicks serious butt! Hard and tough she is also down to earth and has a good sense of what is right and wrong.

This new installment about Anna's life is just as good as the previous books. An old enemy comes out to play and all the characters we know and love are back in some way or another. Sure I missed Anna's partner, who is on holiday and her family, who are now in France but they were mentioned and I am sure they will be back again soon.

I hope Anna will, like her name, stay Strong. I want, no I need, more books about Anna. She is one amazing vampire and the books about her are an excitement filled Paranormal Urban Fantasy delight.

When Percy Parker arrives at Athens Academy she has no idea what awaits her. Located in the heart of London the school is like a fortress surrounded by the dark city. Inside the halls are filled with ghosts which Percy can not only see but speak with. Percy has many special abilities but she has kept most of them to herself so people won't think her more strange than she already looks.

Then Percy is required to learn a subject that she does not understand or enjoy. However the Professor who is teaching the lesson takes her under his wing and begins to tutor her. Professor Alexi Rychman wonders if Percy is the person he and his friends, who guard the city against supernatural terrors, have been searching for all these years. Could it be that Percy Parker is the 'seventh'? all the signs are there but his fellow guards are not convinced and are looking elsewhere.

Can Percy Parker learn to believe in her abilities and herself? Will Professor Alexi Rychman manage to find the 'seventh' and love her like it was foretold? Will the guards find the 'seventh' before the Ripper and the other nasty beasts haunting London do more harm? Something dangerous is out there and time is running out.

I am not a huge fan of historical books but this tale set in 1888 had enough mystery to keep me going to the end. At the begin I enjoyed finding out about Percy Parker, with her strange abilities and looks. Then the tension between Percy and Alexi had me hooked. By the end I really needed to find out what would happen to everyone concerned. The story built up so nicely along the way that there was no question about if I could finished it or not.

Deep, dark, dramatic and delightful this was an usual tale that is like the title promises, Strangely Beautiful. Well written and with interesting characters this historical paranormal romance is sure to appeal to a variety of readers. If you are looking for something mysterious and just that little bit different then maybe you should give Miss Parker a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Bathory High sucks but Vladimir Tod is only just about to turn fifteen so he has to go to school. You would think that being a vampire would get him off going but Vlad is growing up as normal as possible. Thanks to his aunt, he has a regular supply of blood. Thanks to his friend Henry, he has the support he needs to get through all the weird stuff that happens when you are a vampire. Oh and thanks to Meredith, he has a wonderful girlfriend.

However this year is going to suck more than the previous. The trials and tribulations of being a teenager are bad enough for a human but Vlad's vampire side is showing it's colours as well. With his uncle Otis gone and the evil vampire A'Ablo after him, Vlad is not having a great year at all. To make matters worse he may actually be the Pravus that everyone keeps talking about.

The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod are coming along nicely. Book three is just as good as the previous two books and the continuation of the story is keeping me very interested. Being a teenager isn't easy but poor Vlad has to go through human puberty problems as well as Vampire ones. The way that the author has written about this could, in a way, be quite amusing for older readers while younger readers will be able to relate with what Vlad is going through.

Well written and thought out, I am looking forward to reading more about Vlad and to see what happens next. This isn't my favourite young adult series but it is one that I can highly recommend.

Nightshade, California, is a small town that is full of secrets. Daisy Giordano has already unveiled a few of those secrets but she knows she hasn't found out about them all but she is ready to find out more. Which isn't proving to be too hard for her. With all kinds of paranormals in town and special abilities within her own family, Daisy and her sisters are fully involved in the mysteries that surround Nightshade.

Daisy's psychic abilities still need some fine tuning but when Duke Sherrad arrives at Nightshade High she doesn't need to read his mind to know he is a fake. However Duke is only a small annoyance compared to the other things going on. Prom is coming up and Daisy's boyfriend Ryan still hasn't asked her. Actually it would help to see him so he could ask her but he is has been a very absent lately. Then one of her sisters starts seeing a ghost. Actually seeing as in dating...while her other sister is going out with a werewolf.

However weird things are in Nightshade the death of one of her teachers shocks everyone. All fingers are pointing towards an animal attack and to make things interesting Duke predicted the murder. What is going on around Daisy? Who is the killer? Will she figure it out before someone else gets hurt or killed?

Dead is a State of Mind is the second book in the Giordano sisters series and it was a great read. Curled up on the sofa, I read this within a couple of hours and in one gulp. Easy to get into, this young adult paranormal is like watching an episode of your favourite TV series.

If you like paranormal and young adult this is a worthwhile series to get your hands on. Not childish, this series is a little creepy, very paranormal and full of great characters. The plot is good, well written and full of twists. I really like the characters and can't wait to she what happens next in the Giordano household. I don't think they ever have a dull moment!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Dead is the New Black, when I read it a few months ago and I have been dying to get the next books in the series. I am sure I will be reading book three, Dead is so Last year, sooner rather than later because this series really has something addictive inside that makes me want to read more right away.

It is a complicated life being a werewolf and Anna Latham knows this better than most. However she didn't know how dangerous it could be until she mated with Charles Cornick, son and enforcer of Bran, the leader of the North American werewolves. Being an Omega only makes her werewolf life just that little bit more confusing. Certain rules have to be followed, emotions blocked and alot of packs want their very own Omega.

Bran has a controversial proposition he has made to the werewolves all over the world. He believes they should all reveal themselves to the humans. A small summit has been organised to talk about the werewolves coming out but for certain reasons Bran can not attend. Anna and Charles take up the job and find themselves in Seattle trying to turn around the decisions of the wolves who are dead set against the plan.

Although it seems like there more people against the outing of the wolves. Anna is attacked by vampires and people are getting hurt or turning up dead. So Anna and Charles combine their powers and talents to try and hunt down the one responsible for the attacks or they could lose everything.

Hunting Ground is the second book in the Alpha and Omega series and it is much better than book one, Cry Wolf. However in saying that I also have to say that I am not yet in love with this series as much as I am in the Mercy Thompson books. They maybe set in the same world but the style and characters are wide apart from each other.

In this book the emotional relationship that Anna and Charles are growing into really interested. New couples usually seem to be in the honeymoon phase for a while but they are still getting to know each other and their limits. The whole werewolf politics and ways are still, in alot of respects, a mystery to Anna and it is fascinating to read about how she is coping with everything. The plot in this sequel to Cry wolf, didn't have alot of Bran in it but did expand on characters. Hopefully some of these will appear in future books and help build up this series.

I did enjoy this book but as I mentioned before this isn't my favourite series by the author. If you are a Patricia Briggs fan then this is a must read. However if you are a Mercy Thompson fan you maybe slightly disappointed. All in all this is a brilliant author and another great Urban Fantasy series. I look forward to more Alpha and Omega books and following Anna and Charles through their life together.

Tattoo artist Brett Kavanaugh is the owner of a modern tattoo parlor in Las Vegas. Brett and her work colleagues are used to people coming in, making an appointment and then not coming back again. Some people just change their minds. However when a girl comes in to make an appointment for a tattoo with her fiance's name, Brett is sure she will be back. So when the girl doesn't turn up for her tat but is on the news because she is missing, Brett knows something has gone wrong.

It seems that Brett is the last person to have seen the mysterious girl and she feels the need to find out more about her. When she finds out that the name on the tattoo isn't the girls fiance then the plot thickens. Things get even more mysterious and even deadly when Brett finds herself right in the middle of the investigation. Is the girl still alive? Brett needs to find out and everything always comes back to her tattoo parlour.

There are a couple of things that made me want to read this book. The cover was the first thing I saw and even though it is pink (a bit of a turn off) it looked cool. The second thing that struck me was the tattoo theme. Having a few tattoos myself and seeing as I intend on having a few more, this subject really appealed to me. However I have to say I was a little skeptical...another cozy mystery series? With a tattoo theme? With so many cozy mystery themes from tea shops to hairdressers I had to stop and wonder if this was going to be worth it. I took the chance and won!

This new series is one I will definitely be following. The details of the tattoo process were spot on and well written. The plot was not over the top or unrealistic but interesting and mysterious. The characters in the story were likable and ones I would like to get to know better. Brett herself was a sassy leading 'painted' lady and I could really relate to her.

I am really looking forward to the next book 'Pretty in Ink' and hope that this series will keep growing. New, fresh and fun the Tattoo Shop Mysteries is a cozy mystery for the young, old and lovers of tattoos. If you are looking for something different and like a good who-dunnit then look no further!

Jill Kismet is used to unusual cases but this one takes first prize in the category. It all starts out when a someone on the police force asks her to look into a case that was labelled a suicide. Suddenly Jill is in over her head and she needs all the help she can get.

Deception, drugs and murder are just the tip of the iceberg. The cops are on her side, except the ones that are trying to kill her. The hellbreed are her prey, except the ones who maybe able to tell her something useful. Jill's city is in danger and time is running out. How far will this hunter go to save her city, her friends and herself?

This is the third book in the Jill Kismet series and things just keep getting better and better for us readers. Jill on the other hand has her work cut out for her this time around, although that is nothing new for her. A hunter's work is never done and Jill finds this out the hard way in Redemption Alley.

Deep, dark, dismal and delicious this series is hard hitting and fascinating. Lilith Saintcrow has built up an Urban Paranormal Fantasy dream of a world and topped it off with a super lead character. What does the future holds in store for Jill? I don't know but I am definitely going to be reading more to find out.

Jace is dreaming one moment and in another reality the next. Being ripped from her reality isn't easy and before she can ask enough questions and get satisfactory answers she finds herself in a hospital bed. It isn't long before Jace finds out what has happened to her and starts putting the pieces together, even if the full picture sounds and looks like she is still dreaming.

The reality where Jace has been sucked into is one where humans are the minority. David Cassius, the vampire head of the NSA has brought Jace into their world to help solve a series of gruesome murders on vampires and werewolves. In a strange world that is very similar to her own on most fronts she still feels lost when asked to profile the kind of person they are dealing with. After all she hasn't worked with vamps, lycanthropes and golems before.

The insane serial killer is a threat the NSA and they have no past experience to help them. But Jace does. Stranded in a reality where every full moon is a party, Jace has to hunt down a fellow human before he brings the entire planet to the brink of madness. Or she may never see her own world again.

This first book in the Bloodhound Files is just amazing. The whole alternative reality thing made me wonder if this would be more sci-fi than paranormal but the author has hit my favourite genre right on the head and has left me with yet another series to add to my must read list.

Jace is a great main character, even though she accepts the whole vamp, were and golem thing a little too easily for my liking. Scary, bloody and full of dark humour this has got to be one of my favourite debut novels this year. This whole new fresh fun angle on the typical urban paranormal story gets a big thumbs up from me and I am really looking forward to the second book, Death Blows, when it comes out.

A storm is coming and Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin is about to end up right in the middle of it. She should be enjoying a relaxing honeymoon with her Djinn husband David but instead she is not running from the hurricane that is approaching them.

On a hijacked luxury cruise liner Jo and David are joined by an army of fellow Wardens and Djinn. The attempt to lure the storm away from the helpless people on land works but the storm is still out there. The combined magic and power of the Wardens and Djinn don't seem to be enough to stop the storm but that may have something to do with the power mad ex-Weather Warden who is controlling it.

Book eight in the Weather Warden series doesn't give you time to catch your breath. Thrown straight into the storm the action doesn't stop till the very end. All the elements are, as usual, against Jo but this time she has to fight harder than ever before. The setting is an unusual but interesting choice, the story just flows and the characters play their parts well.

The Weather Warden series is an amazingly fresh take on the elements that we take for granted. If the Wardens really existed I would definitely want to be one. There is nothing else out there like this series, this is as unique as it gets. Not to be missed come rain or shine. Rachel Caine has brought us eight great books in the series and hopefully this won't be the last.

Harper Blaine still doesn't know why she is a Greywalker but she is slowly getting used to it. As a private investigator, using the Grey can actually work to her advantage. However the Grey isn't a safe place, as she has already learnt the hard way.

When Harper hears from an ex, and very dead, boyfriend she finds herself visiting him and her mother to find out more about her father's early death. She tries to find his ghost but only finds a void where he should be which leaves Harper with more unanswered questions than she had when she arrived.

Then Harper's investigation into her own mystery gets cut short when a very demanding vampire insists she goes to London for him. When she arrives in England she discovers that her personal mystery is actually tied up with her present job and she starts to get some answers.

London however is a dangerous place and before Harper knows what is happening she is on the run from the baddies and trying to find a friend before he is killed. In a strange city away from all her securities, Harper has to use her Greywalking skills to save her friends and herself.

Vanished is book four in the Greywalker series and even after the long break between books I have no problem getting back up to speed with Harper. Like visiting an old friend, Harper is a character that you will find hard not to like. She has strength and stamina but she is also vulnerable and scared. Harper is just like you and me, past problems, worries about the future and trying to get through the present.

This new installment to the series started off slowly but sped up all the way through till the very end. Being British I loved the idea of Harper being in London and enjoyed her adventures there and found them very detailed and interesting. Lots of new information and some questions are answered in Vanished but I hope that Harper will be back again soon to open up more of the 'grey' for us.

This series is absolutely unique. There is nothing else out there like the 'grey' and the spooky and scary elements that surround it. Ghosts and vampires are just a taste of the paranormal characters you will find inside this book and the rest in the series. With so much variety and such original content this is a series I would highly recommend to all lovers of the paranormal urban fantasy genre.

Fang Kattalakis is a Were-Hunter and is devoted to his family. He is the brother of two of the most powerful members of the Omegrion the ruling council that enforces the laws of the lyncanthropes. There are other Weres but the species don't like to mix. So when Fang falls for a member of the Bear clan he knows he has to try and forget her.

Aimee is also falling for Fang. She can't stop thinking about him and runs to his aid when he needs her. They know they can never be together but when war breaks out they both have to choose sides. So when Aimee is accused of betraying her people there is only one person who believes in her. Fang goes against everything to save the woman he loves just like she did for him.

Another Dark-Hunter book, another enjoyable read. Nineteen books into the series it doesn't look like the series will ever come to an end. To be honest...I don't care! If Sherrilyn keeps writing them I will keep reading them and if she keeps writing them well she can keep going forever as far as I am concerned.

However there is one downside to this series. Things are started to get complicated. Who is with who? Was that the one who did that? and other questions kept popping into my head as I was reading. With nineteen books and so many characters and events, it is hard to keep track of everything that has happened and how it tangles into the latest story.

A little moan, that is specific to this book, is the lack of Dark-Hunters. This story was more Were-Hunter related and there was a serious lack of the guys we have all come to know and love. They were there, just not present enough for my liking and certainly not out in full force. Although who cares? The series is amazing and there are certainly more books to come. Any fan of the Dark-Hunters will enjoy this latest installment and love finally getting to know more about the Sanctuary and the Bear clan who run it.

If you haven't had the pleasure of trying out this series yet then I suggest you do. This is also a great series to recommend to people who want to try out something paranormal but don't fancy the typical vampire or werewolf angle. Dark-Hunters are unique and out of this world. I wouldn't want to be without them.

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield met her undead lover Bones met six years ago. Since then they have gone up against the rogue undead, a master vampire and some other things that go bump in the night. Now they have declared their love to one another with a blood bond and it is time for a much needed holiday. Hopefully Cat's weird dreams won't spoil her time in Paris.

Although Cat doesn't know that her dreams are dangerous until the welcoming committee in France tell her so. It seems that a powerful vampire named Gregor is visiting her in her dreams and if he catches her he can snatch her up for himself. But the question Cat is asking everyone is why does Gregor want her? Why is she so special? The answer she gets isn't one she is happy to hear and starts a chain of events that will have Cat wishing they had stayed home.

Book number four in the Night Huntress series is the best yet! I thought the three previous books were great but Destined for an Early Grave made them look boring. So much emotion, so many revelations and a load of action is what you can expect from the newest installment in one of the best vampire series around.

Cat and Bones have their relationship tested to the limit and the cracks appear. Until the end it isn't sure what will become of one of the favourite urban paranormal fantasy couples. Alot of changes come to pass in this one and I am eager to see what will happen to the characters next. How will things continue for Bones, Cat, their friends and their family?

The Suspense is high and the stakes too. This is one series that I won't be missing and the upcoming spin-off, First Drop of Crimson, can not come too soon for me. If you are a lover of the paranormal genre and haven't read this series yet then you should be ashamed of yourself. This is one of the best, if not the best, vampire series you will find.

This week my guest on Amberkatze's Book Blog is Award-Winning author Leanna Renee Hieber. Her new book, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, is out in print later this month and I can't wait to read it.

So get to know the author and enter this weeks contest for the chance of winning a signed copy of her new release!

-----------------------

Amber - Welcome to Amberkatze's Book Blog! It is great to have you as a guest here and I hope you will enjoy your time here ;) Maybe you can start things off for us by telling my readers a bit about your books?

Leanna - Thanks for the opportunity join you, Amberkatze! I'm thrilled to introduce my debut novel, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, releasing August 25th from Leisure Books / Dorchester Publishing. It's the first in the Strangely Beautiful quartet of Gothic Victorian Fantasy novels. I'm honored to report that my novella Dark Nest recently won the 2009 Prism Award for excellence in the genres of Futuristic, Fantasy and Paranormal Romance.

Amber - What is your process for writing a book? Do you get an idea and expand on it? Or do you brainstorm?

Leanna - Characters appear in my mind, their setting and circumstance almost immediately evident. It’s like watching film stills or movie trailers. I start writing down this movie in my mind, catching snippets of dialogue, trying to set the dramatic stage I see before me. I love intense characters and intense settings. Plot begins to fall in line once I’m hooked on the characters or a particularly compelling place/setting. Stories unfold before me piece by piece, it's very hard for me to plot a novel before hand, I can try but it will always change. Knowing an overarching idea and trajectory is good, lest I write myself up against a wall or down a dead end, but new twists and turns keep surprising me along the way.

Amber - Are you anything like your characters? Are any of them based on people you know?

Leanna - *grin* One of my favourite moments in the offices at Dorchester was when the director of sales sat me down and asked: "How autobiographical is this book?" I blinked. "I didn't live in the 19th century, Tim...." I replied. We laughed. "There's so much of you, your sparkle, your drama and your energy in this book," he clarified. I took his sense that there was a synchronicity between artist and art as a great compliment. Truly, I'd love to live this novel, though I'd hate to go through everything I put my characters through! I have a flair for the dramatic, having come from a professional theatre background that deeply informs the book, as does my kinship with genre fiction.. This book is my 'love letter to the world' - blending what I love about Gothic novels into fantasy, historical, horror, suspense, gaslight, paranormal and romance novels- all into one book. This genre-mix made the novel hard to sell, but in the end, my publisher and I believe in the cross-genre appeal of the book.

I think we all have to start with characters that we can relate to personally. However, Percy Parker became a legitimate heroine and an interesting character only when she became her own being rather than my alter ego. Marianna is a composite of many high-school and college friends I remain close with to this day. The Guard are archetype characters that took on unique lives of their own inside the nine year journey from idea to publication. Alexi is the culmination of all my literary love affairs (I have this habit of falling in love with literary characters) all wrapped into one character and because of this, I'm not sure I'll ever love a hero as much as I love him.

Amber - What projects are you working on at the moment? What releases can your fans expect in upcoming year?

Leanna - I'm thrilled that the next book in the Strangely Beautiful series, picking up exactly where The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker leaves off, is scheduled for 2/24/2010. I'm keeping the sequel title quiet until the series launches. The plan is to have all four books in the quartet out by 2011, one every 6 months. That means I have to be very disciplined! That’s daunting. But there isn't a single artistic project that I love more than this series. I'm currently a third of the way through my rough draft of Strangely Beautiful III, a prequel novel, and enjoying the paces my characters are putting me through.

Amber - How did you end up being a writer? Was it something you always wanted to do? What other jobs have you had?

Leanna – I was a storyteller as soon as I could form a sentence. I started writing short stories as soon as I could hold a pen. I loved writing, art, music and theatre. I went to school for theatre but never stopped writing. As a ‘starving artist’ I’ve had so many different jobs. I had the blessing of a good run of professional theatre gigs out of college but between shows I’ve been any number of the following; Starbucks barista, paralegal, freelance writer, playwright, the Pillsbury Doughboy (in the suit and everything), promoter, tour-guide, administrative assistant, stage manager, stand-in and a background extra for film and television. I still work in television and remain a proud member of the performers’ unions AEA, SAG and AFTRA.

Amber - How did you end up writing paranormal genre books? Was it a genre that always interested you?

Leanna - I often say "Para" is my "Normal." Some of my earliest childhood memories are of inventing my own ghost stories. Before I ever knew what "genre" was, paranormal and fantasy subjects were a part of my identity. There’s simply no substitute for the magical, mythic and supernatural.

Amber - What books do you like to read when you have time? Do you have any must read authors/series?

Leanna - I support books written by friends and I try to keep up on my genre(s), but I admit my reading pace is not keeping up with my expanding TBR pile. At the moment I'm switching between research books for upcoming Strangely Beautiful books and picking up my go-to Mystery writers; Anne Perry and Elizabeth Peters and their 19th century set books. They help keep the period vernacular in my head while still attending to a modern audience. I find if I'm in the thick of writing I don't want to read anything too fantastical because I'll get so wrapped up in another author's world that it becomes hard to attend to my own.

Amber - What do you like to do to relax?

Leanna - Adventure about my grand, adopted hometown of NYC, dance at various Goth clubs, dine and drink with friends and watch episodes of Dr. Who with my sweetheart.

Amber - Lots of authors have playlists for their books. Do you have any specific music/artists that you like to listen to when you are writing?

Leanna - I must have music on while I write. I listen to Philip Glass soundtracks, (Particularly The Hours, The Illusionist and Dracula as well as his symphonies) Linford Detweiler's gorgeous piano music, classical music from composers like Dvorak and Tchaikovsky (contemporaries to the Strangely Beautiful setting). I can’t have music with lyrics playing while I'm writing but bands/lyrics influence and inspire me. On the subway I listen to my favourite Goth/Electronica band, VNV Nation, and dream up new moments for my characters.

Amber - If you could be any paranormal creature what would you be and why?

Leanna - A Sorceress like Galadriel. Because she's an elf and a witch and the coolest ever.

Amber - You are stranded on a desert island. What 5 things do you hope to have with you?

Leanna - 1. Some sort of writing device (endless pads of paper? Computer with generator?) 2. The Oxford English Dictionary - all the time in the world to learn new words, plus the magnifying glass is useful in capturing the sun to start a fire! 3. My iTunes playlists 4. All the Harry Potter books. 5. Hacking code to get into the entire archives of the BBC. (This would require the computer, I suppose, and some fancy wireless that could eventually track me as not stranded but in fact just on vacation and enjoying the quiet...)

Amber - Thank you so much for being a guest on Amberkatze's Book Blog. I hope you will pop by again sometime!

Leanna - Thanks for the opportunity, Amber, most certainly!

Three months have passed since psychologist Megan Chase made the shocking discovery that the world is filled with demons. Strangely though Megan is the only person in the world who doesn't have her own personal demon sitting on her shoulder. However that doesn't mean she has nothing to do with the world in which they live. Megan has become the leader of a demon 'family' and is finding it hard to understand what is expected from her.

So when Megan finds out that some of her demons are being killed she is forced to address the situation. Lucky she has her demon lover Greyson Dante to help her but sometimes his help isn't the kind she needs. While Megan is busy trying to keep her demons safe and under control she also finds herself dealing with some family issues and finding out the truth about her past.

With personal problems and personal demons, Megan is really having one hell of a time. So it is great that she isn't alone. Her demon guards do everything they can and her friends Tera and Brian are always around to support her. Maybe now Megan can put the past behind her, have enough strength to get through the present and manage to face her demon future?

In April last year I read 'Personal Demons' the first in the series about Megan Chase. I absolutely loved it and couldn't wait for the next book in this amazing new series. So when the book arrived and I my review quote even made it on to the cover I knew I was in for a treat!

However before I say how great this book was I have to moan a little ;) I have to ask - Why such a long wait? I dived straight into this and felt a little out of my depth at the beginning. I realised that after all this time the storyline from Personal Demons wasn't that fresh in my mind as I thought it was. Lost and confused I kept reading and was rewarded but I have to wonder why the publishers made us wait for so long!

Apart from that, all I can say is - Bravo! Stacia Kane has got a good feeling for Paranormal Urban Fantasy and has managed to start her own unique series. Megan is a realistic character who has lots of problems but no easy way out given to her by the author. She deals with things like we all would. She screams, she runs away and sometimes she is sick from it all.

The story is fast and furious and the action is non-stop. Just when you think Megan and her demons have a break from it all something else pops up and has them on the move again. This book doesn't have any dull moments in it and once I got back into Megan's world I couldn't stay away.

If you haven't read the first book in the series, Personal Demons, then I highly recommend you read it and Demon Inside as close together as possible. If you have already read Personal Demons and like me, you read ages ago, then try to catch up with Megan first before heading on to Demon Inside.

All in all this is scary, sexy and serious. With not as many laughs as last time this series looks like it will get deeper and darker and I am all for it! Bring it on!

This week my guest here on Amberkatze's Book Blog is author Cassandra Clare. Cassandra is the writer behind The Mortal Instruments series and the upcoming Infernal Devices books.

Here is your chance to get to know Cassandra better and also win one of her books. Enjoy the interview and make sure you enter the contest!

-------------------------

Amber - Welcome to Amberkatze's Book Blog! It is great to have you as a guest here and I hope you will enjoy your time here ;)

Amber - Did you always want to be a writer? What other jobs have you had?

Cassandra - I always wanted to be a writer. I always loved writing. And reading. Most people who love to write, start with a love of reading. I started writing books when I was about 12. They were all terrible and all in different genres. I wrote a terrible vampire novel and a terrible mystery novel and a terrible romance novel and a terrible Arthurian novel. Then I went to college and I took some writing classes, and I didn’t really enjoy them all that much, and I figured maybe I didn’t want to be a fiction writer. After college I worked as a journalist and I also worked part-time in a children’s bookstore. It was working in the children’s bookstore and starting to re-read the books I’d read when I was a kid that rekindled my desire to write.

Amber - How did you end up writing Young Adult? Was it planned? What about the paranormal genre?

Cassandra - Well, when you sit down to write a book about teenagers and there's magic in it, then it often ends up being shelved/marketed as young adult fantasy. But it isn't the writer who makes those categorical marketing decisions. You just write the book you want to write.

Amber - Are you anything like your characters? Are any of them based on people you know?

Cassandra - No. Sometimes minor characters have the names on people I know — Simon’s friends Eric, Kirk and Matt are all the names of friends of mine. But I don't put myself or people I know in my books. These characters are created to fit the needs of the story and to be very much themselves. Sometimes they incorporate aspects of people I know, or have met, like Simon’s sense of humor or Clary’s artistry. Jace, alas, is definitely not based on anyone real.

Amber - The Mortal Instruments series has three books so far. What is next? Book four or something new?

Cassandra - The series I am working on right now is called The Infernal Devices. The Infernal Devices is a series of prequels to The Mortal Instruments, set in 19 $B!l (Bth century London. It won’t have our current characters in it, except for Magnus Bane, but it does deal with their ancestors. You can find out more by clicking here!

Amber - The covers for the Mortal Instruments series are gorgeous. Did you have any say in how the finished book would look? How much input do you really have as an author once you have handed your story over?

Cassandra - I didn't have any say in how the first finished book looked. The way it looks is exactly how it looks when the cover image first landed in my inbox. I do like the covers, but it wouldn't have made any difference if I didn't. An author, especially a first-time author, has very little influence over what goes on their covers. I did get some input into the third cover, only because we wound up having a conference about who we thought should be featured on that cover and they listened to my suggestions. That's unusual though.

Amber - You are going on tour soon and will actually be visiting Vienna, Austria (where I am!) as well as some other places in Europe. Seeing as authors rarely come here I have to ask how did this tour come about? (more information here!)

Cassandra - Well, I've been very lucky, and the Chroniken die Underwelt books have been a big success in the German language. They've sold well enough there that my publisher thought it would be a good idea to bring me over to meet readers and get a chance to talk to them about the next series: The Infernal Devices. I'm very excited to get the chance to go!

Amber - How important it is for you as an author to keep up with all these websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc. Do you think all these sites are good or bad for authors?

Cassandra - I think as an author there's a fine line there. You want to have an online presence so you can reach out to fans and readers. You want to be able to easily get information out to them, and get their feedback yourself. But you don't want to spend so much time monitoring Myspace and Twitter that you have no time to write your books, which is of course, the most important thing.

Amber - What do you like to do to relax?

Cassandra - I like to travel.

Amber - Lots of authors have playlists for their books. What music or bands would find their way onto a playlist for the Mortal Instruments Series?

Cassandra - You can find playlists for the Mortal Instruments books here:

Amber - Thank you so much for being a guest on Amberkatze's Book Blog. I hope you will pop by again sometime and I hope to see you in Vienna in November!

Cassandra - Yes, hope to see you then!

Kaylee Cavanaugh thinks there is something wrong with her. She doesn't see dead people but she does sense when someone is about to die. It isn't something she can control but when it happens all she wants to do is scream. Her aunt and uncle already had her committed once after she had an 'episode' but it has been a long time since it has happened and Kaylee is happy to be living a normal life.

Then one evening Kaylee feels the need to scream. Not only is the location, a night club, not the best place to start screaming but also the hottest guy in school is paying lots of attention to her as she sees the person who is going to die. However Kaylee doesn't need to worry about Nash. He seems to know more about what is happening to her than she does. What they both don't know is who is taking the souls of all the young girls who weren't scheduled to die.

I am a huge fan of Rachel Vincent's Werecat series and now I am a huge fan of her new Young Adult series. If the start of the Soul Screamers series 'My Soul to Take' is anything to go by, then this is going to be another must have series from one of the best Paranormal Urban Fantasy writers out there!

Rachel Vincent brought us something fresh and new with her werecat series and she has done it again with the Soul Screamers. This is unique, fascinating and addictive and I couldn't put it down for more than a few minutes. Kaylee and Nash are amazing lead characters and the plot was delicious! I eagerly lapped up the whole book from start to finish and I am dying to see what happens next.

If you are already a fan of the author then this is not to be missed. If you like Young Adult paranormals then get this straight away. Oh well just get it. You won't regret it! I certainly won't be giving this copy away ;)
