The Blurb -
Condemned to death for black magic and shunned, Rachel Morgan has three days to somehow get to the annual witches convention in San Francisco and clear her name. If she fails, the only way she can escape death is to live in the demonic ever after . . . for ever after.
Banned from the flight lists, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, headed for the West Coast for his own mysterious business. But Rachel isn’t the only passanger along for the ride. Can a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car survive for over 2,300 miles? And that’s not counting the assassin on their tail.
A fearsome demon walks the sunlight, freed after centuries of torment to slay the innocent and devour souls. But his ultimate prey is Rachel Morgan. While the powerful witch with nerves of steel will do whatever it takes to stay alive, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her.
My Review -
Book nine in the Hollows series and, as always, I couldn't wait to read the new Rachel Morgan story. Dead Witch Walking was my first Paranormal Urban Fantasy read and is the reason I found the genre. This series and author hold a special place in my reading life but I have to admit that Pale Demon didn't impress me as much as the previous books.
I am not sure what was missing from this new release or what was wrong with it. I just didn't get sucked in and captured by the story or plot. While a lot happened in this book I also felt like nothing happened. Where I should have been excited I just felt tired and when the book was coming to an end I was relieved and not sad.
I miss the good old days. Maybe this series is just getting old? Complicated and off track? I can't say for sure but Pale Demon wasn't, imho, the best in the series. The road trip was interesting and the shunning was over too quickly. Ivy was there but unusually quiet. Nothing from the story really surprised me and I hated that Trent stole Ceri's thunder.
Will I be following this series in the future? Yes. Why? Because despite book #9 being a bit of a disappointment for me I still want to know what happens next. This wasn't the best yet but if I had really hated it I wouldn't have read it till the end. Rachel Morgan is still on my must read list and hope she is on better form next time.

I have read the first book in the series and it was also one of my first paranormal/Urban Fantasy reads. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, but as you said sometimes things just start to get old, maybe it's time for the series to wind down or get a major overhaul.... I'm looking forward to catching up to book nine soon though.
