62) Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

The Blurb :

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack.

But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board . . .

My Review :

Another Sookie! Oh Joy! This series is a favourite of mine and many other people around the world. It is always a pleasure to have a new Sookie story come out and I savour every word. However before I go any further I have to say this wasn't by far my favourite book so far and it certainly didn't stand out too much. Actually, even though I would hate the series to end, I did wonder when it will end. Isn't it about time Sookie got a good quiet life? A nice normal husband? A few kids? If I was her and I had one wish (you will understand this reference if and when you read this book) then maybe wishing away all the paranormals would help Sookie's situation?

Anyway, back to the new Sookie installment. Harris fans will be happy to hear that Lily Bard and her husband make a surprise visit in this book. We have a lovely Bubba show and even Amelia and Bob pay a visit. It looked like Bill wasn't going to be in this one at all but the second half of Dead Reckoning gave us more than enough of him to read about. Sookie's fairy ties are cleared up and we find out how and why she got her 'gift' and once again she manages to get into a big vampire mess and a bit of shifter predicament.

So there is a lot going on this book but yeah I would still like to see this series come to an end sometime soon. Fans may hate me for making this statement but all good things must come to an end and while I love reading each new book Harris brings out, I feel like it may just be time to wrap things up and call it a day as far as Sookie is concerned.

While reading Dead Reckoning I thought it would be great if Harris could let Sookie live happily every after and do a spin-off. Maybe jump a decade or two into the future and follow Hunter? Go deeper into the pack and write more about the shifters? Or see what Amelia and Bob can get up to with their magic abilities. There are so many amazing characters in this series that I would hate to say goodbye to but I have to be realistic because I get the feeling that things will be coming to an end soon.

Fans of the series must read this. There is no way around it. Anyone who still hasn't tried these books really needs to get hold of them and start. If there is anyone out there who hasn't. I guess we all have to wait another year for another new installment but at least we have True Blood series four coming up soon. Can't wait to see how that turns out.

I have read the first two books in the series, and my one complaint and the main reason I won't be reading the rest: there is no humor in the books. The story itself is nice, but it is told so very dryly.

Amber: I'm with you on the series. I will continue to collect them in audio as long as Charlaine keeps writing, but I think the next one is the last from what I've read.
