Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux's latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant.
Will Alexia manage to determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria before it is too late? Is it the vampires again or is there a traitor lurking about in wolf's clothing? And what, exactly, has taken up residence in Lord Akeldama's second best closet?
My Review :
I have been eagerly awaiting the 4th book in the Parasol Protectorate and was extremely upset that Heartless wasn’t available on Kindle. After a bit of a wait I finally got a copy from my local Amazon and as soon as I had it in my hands I started reading. I am totally in love with this series and I couldn’t even begin to imagine what shenanigans the lovely Lady Alexia Maccon would get up to this time around.
To make things even more fun, Alexia, as we know from book three, is with child. So it was exciting to find our heroine already eight months along and waddling around London. I didn’t think this series could get more humorous but I was wrong. How the other characters try to stay clear of her moods and pussyfoot around her condition is very amusing. Even more entertaining is Lord Akeldama's constant new pet names for Alexia. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion and sniggering to myself repeatedly throughout the book.
All the gang is back in force in this new episode and the plot is full of werewolves, vampires and ghosts. The appearance of an octopus and some zombie porcupines only add even more comedy, action and depth to the story. Steam punk is not for everyone but I love the way it is mixed with the Paranormal. Alexia is the perfect leading lady with her feisty and witty ways.
I never did like historical novels but the way this Victorian based series flows and entertains makes me yearn for more. I love Gail Carriger’s writing style and am extremely happy that she managed to keep her unique recipe going once again in this latest tale of parasols. What I really admire about this series is the Britishness but what keeps me coming back for more is the way these stories make me smile.
Book five in the series, Timeless, will be the last but this is definitely going to be a series that I will read again in the future. It is also a series I have been recommending to everyone and one I can’t wait to buy as Birthday or Christmas presents for friends and family. I look forward to seeing what Timeless brings and can’t wait to see what new delights the author bestows upon us.

This is one of my favorite series. I like reading them in print as much as I do listening to them on my commute. Alexia and Lord Akeldama are my two favorite characters, leaning more towards Akeldama I think. I would love to have a friend like him. I need to catch up on the series, only have read and/ or listened to the first two.
This sounds like an interesting series. I will have to get the first one so I can start reading this series.
Great review Amber, you really make me want to start reading this series. I love books that made me laugh, but I am so not into steampunk. My best friend also loves the series.
