51) Hearts at Stake by Alyxander Harvey

The Blurb :

On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.

Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.

My Thoughts :

This book has been on my wishlist for a while and I believe I got this copy for Christmas. I am taking part in a Read-a-thon this weekend and I am trying to get some of the 'real' books read from my dusty bookshelf and leaving the nice new books on the Kindle alone! So far so good ;)

When I started reading this book I felt a little lost. There was a lot of information I didn't have about the characters and their situation. Also I had no background what so ever about the whole vampire story. I really thought I had asked for the wrong book and this was the second in the series. That was how it felt. Slowly, bits and pieces of the information I needed started to come out but by the end of the book I still felt like I was missing parts of the story.

Depsite this I enjoyed the story. It was hard at first to get used to the character POV changing each chapter but once I got to know Lucy and Solange better it was easier to recognise who was narrating. I liked both girls but I think I liked Lucy just a little bit more. I am really eager to see what happens with her and Nicolas.

I will be adding the second book to this series on to my wishlist. For a debut and first in a series it wasn't that bad. It has a lot going for it and I hope the author manages to keep the plot exciting in the next books. Although if you are looking to start this series it seems the Drake Chronicles got re-released with new covers and titles? So make sure you find the right book to start off!

Thanks for the review. I've found it hard at first to get into POV changes too. But in the end I've always enjoyed the read.
