125) The Shifting Price of Prey by Suzanne McLeod

The Blurb :

Sometimes a bit of magical help might cost more than you bargained for . . .

London is hosting the Carnival Fantastique, and Genny's job has never been busier or more fulfilling. Only not everyone is so happy. The fae are in trouble again and Genny learns the mysterious Emperor may have the solution they need – if Genny can find him.

Genny needs help. She turns to the vampire, Malik al-Khan, only to find he’s wrestling with his own demons. Genny’s own problems are about to multiply too. An old flame arrives with a tragic situation, just as the police request her urgent assistance with a magical kidnap. Is it all unconnected, or can the Emperor help her solve more than the fae’s troubles?

My Thoughts :

Some authors get writers block and so it is only natural that some book lovers get readers block. This has been my problem this week and despite totally wanting to read this 4th book in the Spellcrackers series, I just couldn't keep reading it for more than a few chapters at a time. A book I usually would have finished reading over the weekend ended up not even half done by Monday morning. Today though I finally got the book finished.

I have really enjoyed this series so far. The British setting and the nice mixture of paranormals really sticks out from the usual suspects and even though I am not a fae lover the vampire aspect keeps me happy. This fourth book in the series had, as always, all the things I like about this series. Genevieve was as daring and busy as always and managing to get involved with all kinds of trouble.

However I have to admit I felt a little lost. Somehow, I just couldn't place some of the characters. Also some of the past story that was refered to just didn't ring many bells. It seemed like a vague dream. Maybe the break between books was too long or perhaps there was just too much information to take in. Afterall the author really packs in a lot of action into her stories.

The Shifting Price of Prey is a work or art. It needs time and concentration to understand and enjoy. I think I didn't manage to give it what it deserved. I did like it but it wasn't my favourite in the series so far. I am also pretty sure that I wasn't in the right mood for reading this week which didn't help my feelings for this book.

The Spellcrackers series is special and unusual and I am really interested to see what happens next time. This fourth book had a very strange ending but I am extremely curious to see how things will continue. I am also very invested in Genny's story. I like her and want to know what comes next. There are so many unanswered questions still open.

If you are looking for something totally supernatural with structure and depth then you really need to try this series. Make sure you start at the beginning though. This isn't a story you can pick up along the way.

I agree that you need your full concentration for this series, and that you have to let it sink in a bit. It is certainly not a light or easy read.
