157) The Strange Case of Finley Jayne

The Blurb :

Finley Jayne knows she's not 'normal'. Normal girls don't lose time, or have something inside them that makes them capable of remarkably violent things. Her behavior has already cost her one job, so when she's offered the lofty position of companion to Phoebe, a debutante recently engaged to Lord Vincent, she accepts, despite having no experience.

Lord Vincent is a man of science with his automatons and inventions, but Finley is suspicious of his motives where Phoebe is concerned. She will do anything to protect her new friend, but what she discovers is even more monstrous than anything she could have imagined...

My Thoughts :

This author and series has been on my radar for a while.  So when I came across this prequel short story I decided it was high time I saw if it was something I really wanted to check out or not.  The story was free on kindle so no loss or harm done if I didn't like it.  Don't you just love these kinds of short stories?

All in all I did like this one.  There was so much mystery to exactly what Finley Jayne can do.  She doesn't even know herself!  The story was good, well written and worth reading.  The characters nice and interesting.  The London location and the Victorian setting was a nice angle.  There wasn't really a paranormal aspect as such but maybe Finley is paranormal in some way.  This short story didn't make that entirely clear.  Maybe it is something you learn in the series?  Also the Steampunk genre was very low profile.  It was there but just not as dominate as I am used to.

I will be adding the first book to my wishlist and hopefully I will get the chance to read it sometime soon.  This novella has certainly left me curious and I would love to know where the author takes things.
