Vivi has known the truth about her family—and herself—since she was thirteen. But that doesn’t mean she’s accepted it. Being Haguari isn’t something she feels she’ll ever accept. How can she feel like anything but a freak knowing that it’s in her genes to turn into a jaguar?
Now eighteen, Vivi’s ready to break away from the traditions of her heritage. But all of that changes with the shocking, devastating deaths of her parents and the mysteries left behind. Vivi discovers family she never even knew she had, and a life open with possibility. New friends, new loyalties, and even romance all lay ahead—but so do dangers unlike anything Vivi ever could have imagined.
My Thoughts :
This book has been on my Kindle for a while now but I decided to read it closer to the release date. However I didn't expect to read it so close to the release date! Whatever my reason for not reading this straight away, well they were stupid and I shouldn't have waited. This was an amazing read and I can't believe how much I loved it.
Cate Tiernan is not a new author to me and I have read and enjoyed nearly all of her books. With some great paranormal twists and usually more Young Adult than not, her concepts and storytelling are not only mesmerizing but very well thought out works of art. This new series called Birthright certainly impressed me more than I expected and despite loving her other work Derkest Fear is now my favourite Cate Tiernan read.
At the beginning I admit I wasn't sure. I didn't read the blurb because I enjoy and trust the author enough to grab the book without checking what the story was about. So when the real paranormal twist came to light, well I was in my element. Jaguars! I love cats and anything paranormal and feline to read is, when written right, is always a joy. So it is with great pleasure that I announce that Cate Tiernan has managed to achieve a great mix of paranormal feline, mystery and thriller as well as keeping the Young adult aspect to practically adult stage.
The characters are nice and interesting to get to know. Of course Vivi isn't the easiest character to get to know at the beginning but once she gets going and the story develops I could only like her more and more with each chapter. The story was well written and very captivating. I was actually very upset when it came to an end. I could have read more.
If you enjoyed Rachel Vincent's Shifters series then you will definitely want to give this one a try. If you are a Cate Tiernan fan then you really need to get hold of this one very soon. If you like shifters and especially enjoy the feline types then you will really want to try this one. It has a nice background story and some lovely little twists.
My main problem now is the wait. When will the second part be released? Most likely in a years time. I could happily read more of this right now and forget everything else on my shelves. I enjoyed this so much. A great book to start the New Year and one that I hope to revisit before the next part comes outs.

Amazing, how could I not know about this book? I loved her Sweep series as a tween, and the Balefire ones.
