170) The Thrill of the Haunt by E.J. Copperman

The Blurb :

Alison Kerby’s guesthouse is already crowded with spirits. The last thing she needs is a whole new batch of haunts settling in.

As Alison’s reputation as “the ghost lady” grows, so does her business—and not always in a way she’d like. Tourists may be flocking to her guesthouse for a chance to glimpse her resident spirits, but her special abilities are also bringing unwanted private investigation cases to her door. And she has no choice but to take a case when the local homeless man is found murdered under mysterious circumstances, just hours after asking for help in exorcising a specter.

If that weren’t enough to deal with, Alison’s other PI case soon turns fatal, as the mistress she was spying on for a jealous wife turns up dead as well. The cases seem like they couldn’t possibly be linked, but with a mountain of clues, motives and suspects—both living and dead—Alison will have to think fast before someone else checks out for good…

My Thoughts :

The fifth installment in the Haunted Guest House series was my last read of 2013 and also the final book I needed to complete my reading challenge.  It was a great book to end with and a nice easy read.  I enjoyed it as much as the previous books and loved the ghostly mystery.

Things have come so far in this series and it is nice to see Alison really settling down in her Guesthouse with the family and friends she needs.  Her new relationship with the paint shop owner is a nice little romance but it seems that both parties are taking things very slow but still spending a lot of time together.  As is Alison's mother and deceased father spending more time with their daughter.  It is quite a full house.

I have to say that this time around Alison did annoy me a little.  Her attitude towards the ghostly aspect of her life and her new relationship was a bit weird and unfair.  I was surprised the ghosts didn't just up and leave her.  Although they did get some revenge.  Melissa, Alison's daughter, is sometimes much older and wiser than her mother and maybe the author should have cast this character as an older teenager.

The ghosts are always fun but the mystery is the most interesting part of this series.  The author always manages to come up with a well thought out tale with some great characters and concepts.  Never a dull moment and always a great read.

If you, like me, enjoy a good cozy and prefer it with a twist of the paranormal then you really need to check out the Haunted Guest House books.  I am really interested to see how things continue and wonder how Alison will keep coping with the ghostly things life keeps throwing at her.  This series remains on my must read list.
