My Thoughts :

I have been a fan of the 'Dead Is..' series ever since I came across it ....way back when...and I never miss a new release.  Yes it is young adult but Nightshade is such a cool place with all its supernatural goings on and the characters are very special too.  Where the series started off from Daisy's psychic perspective it has now moved on to Jessica's Virago warrior life.  All good and it makes for great exciting reading.  Eight books in it feels like a nice long weekend away.

However this time around I am not singing the highest praises.  Dead Is Just A Dream, for me, just didn't match up to the previous books.  It felt rushed, too busy and the plot took a few leaps that were all too quick and not rational but worked out.  Now maybe I read this too fast and missed something or my expectations were just too high but I am sad to say I didn't enjoy this one as much as the other books in the series.

Now every series has a dud or at least a part that you like less than the others and it seems this series has now covered that expectation.  So many characters were involved and it was hard to remember who was who.  Especially the ones on the sidelines who popped up now and again like I should know for sure who they were.  The plot, while being a nice idea, was somehow complicated but yet simple and the wonderful opportunity (the Mara) aspect just disappeared and left me feeling very disappointed.

What I really didn't understand about this installment was the last chapter.  The 'Six Years Later'.  This book was about Jessica, her life and her relationship problems.  However, this after thought was all about Daisy.  Now Daisy was in this book quite a bit compared to the previous books told from Jessica's perspective but I have no idea why the author added this on.  It was nice to see a little piece of the future and what happens to Daisy but what about Jessica???   Is this the end?  Will we never hear from Daisy again or is the series jumping six years?  I was left confused and worried.

I am not saying stay away from this book and I am not saying this is a bad series.  This is the eighth installment and just, imho, not the best one yet.  However there are seven amazing stories before this one that rock highly!  Maybe this one rocked too and I was too ill/tired/over expectant etc to see it clearly.  So what I am trying to say is that I haven't lost my faith in this author or this series and I am still looking forward to another installment in the series.  I just hope that all becomes a little clearer next time around.  a

My Review :

I am a huge fan of Marlene's 'Dead Is' series and I was really looking forward to what else the author had on offer. So her move into Urban Fantasy was a great chance to see if the author could wow me with something new. Used to her Young Adult paranormal genre written from a female perspective it took me a few mintutes to realise that the guy on the cover wasn't just supposed to be eye candy but actually the lead character. Then it was another chapter or two before I was more than certain that the book wasn't young adult.

Why didn't I know all this? Well I am one of those people who skim over a blurb and say 'yeah I wanna read that'. Then forget everything about the blurb and start reading a book without knowing what it is about. So Strange Fates started off different to what I was expecting and it put me off a little. I am not a huge lover of guy's leading the story when a woman is doing the writing but all that said and done a lot of women pull it off. Marlene is one of them. Not being a Young Adult wasn't a problem. After all you can only take so many teenage love stories before you start seeing red.

My adjustment phase over I managed to get into the story pretty easily. The author gave away snippets of information along the way and it was enough for me to keep things together. Sometimes it felt like some of the information was being repeated a little too often but at least I could keep tabs on who was who, why things were the way they were and so on. The fantasy aspect flowed into the story nicely but I have to admit I expected more. While the story talked about magic and creatures it just didn't seem present enough. It was something that only came into play when really needed and it was always over so quickly.

The concept was pretty cool. The whole Greek mythology bit has been done before but the author has managed to put yet another new twist on to it. The mythology didn't come up very often but when it did it fit into the story well and I am sure it is something that the rest of the series will focus on more. The writing style was nothing special and at times it felt a little jumpy. Maybe I am just so used to Marlene's other books that I couldn't look past this but things didn't flow all the time.

As for the characters, well they were a nice mixed bunch. I didn't really like many of them that much though and don't feel I really got the chance to get to know them well. If any of them come along for the ride and are involved in the next story then it will be nice to see them again but nobody really grabbed me and made me want to come back for more. Nyx came across as a young boy and he also acted like one more than once. I can't say he has made his mark either but he does offer some air of mystery. I am sure he could grow on me but for most of the book he is pretending to be someone he isn't. Not a great way to really get to know someone.

All in all this was an interesting first in a new series. It offered some good groundwork for what could be a good series. However this is definitely one of those debuts that has left me unsure. I really need the second book to decide. Strange Fates didn't give me enough to hold onto or get me excited about. I will definitely check out the sequel but it will have to wow me because this one didn't quite have it.

Sadly in last place with only 4.76% of the votes is Dead Is a Killer Tune by Marlene Perez. Love this series! I hope you will all give it a try anyway!


Fourth place goes to Scorch by Gina Damico. The 9.52% of the vote is a surprise. The debut in this series won the monthly giveaway way back when it released.


20.63% was only enough for third place this month. That honour goes to To Kill A Warlock by H.P. Mallory which is actually a much older release than the other four books!


Second place with 22.22% of the votes, is Two Weeks' Notice by Rachel Caine. Great sequel to this newest series by the author.

My Thoughts :

My seventh trip to Nightside was again from the perspective of Jessica. Some of you may know her from the series as Daisy's neighbour but if you are up to date with the series you will know that she has taken the reins and is a Virago. This means that the town of Nightshade is under her watch. If something happens she knows about it and has to make sure the trouble doesn't get out of hand. Oh and with Nightshade being such a paranormal filled place it is very prone to trouble.

This time around the wonderful bands the series has always mentioned are the highlight of the story. With the Battle of the Bands taking place in Nightshade there is a lot going on. Jess even notices a few things happening that seem a little unusual even by Nightshade standards and tries her best to make sense of it all.

Expect some death, a lot of music, talking dolls and the Pied Piper. Yes it sounds like it could be an episode of Grimm, and could be, but this story is an unique as it comes. There are some extremely cool surprises as Jess and her friends find out what is really going on this time.

Another lovely trip to Nightshade completed! I can't wait to go back again and see what paranormal goodness the author has thought out for us next. Always interesting and exciting this is a series that the young and old will enjoy. It has something for everyone and the supernatural element is light and fun.
