56) Coraline by Neil Gaiman

The Blurb :

When Coraline explores her new home, she steps through a door and into another house just like her own - except that things aren't quite as they seem. There's another mother and another father in this house and they want Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. Coraline must use all of her wits and every ounce of courage in order to save herself and return home... but will she escape and will life ever be the same again?

My Thoughts :

I have heard so much about this author and it is only natural to check a writer out who seems to be so amazing. However I think I picked the wrong book or Neil Gaiman just isn't my kind of author. I fought through this one, even though it was only a short book. It was hard work and very exhausting to read. So much weirdness and in 'child' language. I work with kids and am pushed to my limits by them but Coraline really annoyed me.

A daydream? A fantasy? Drugs? Whatever Coraline was experiencing can only be described as a weird mix of Alice in Wonderland and OZ. I found little of it pleasing and of course the main reason Coraline was going through it all was the lack of attention from her parents. A wild imagination and boredom obviously have a lot to answer for.

I haven't given up on this author yet. I really need to try something else of his someday. Coraline was my first choice because the film looked so cool. Now I won't even bother with the film. Not my favourite read this year. Just another book gone from my dusty shelves!
