128) Tempest in the Tea Leaves

The Blurb :

Using various fortune telling tools to interpret her visions, Sunny seeks to aid the residents of Divinity, New York. But when she uses tea leaves to read the frazzled town librarian, what lies at the bottom of the cup is anything but helpful.

My Thoughts :

I needed a little cozy mystery and this one was waiting for me on my Kindle and won the fight.  The whole Fortune Teller angle sounded fun and more paranormal than some cozy concepts and even though the cover art looks a little 'old lady' I wanted to see if this series was worth keeping my eye on.

Within the first couple of chapters I was enjoying the story.  It may have been slightly predictable at first, new girl to town reading the tea leaves of a woman who is about to get murdered and all, but there was some nice quirky items in this story that made me like this debut in the series.

Monty the cat is fun and interesting.  I hope the next books in the series keep this magical/paranormal kitty coming and maybe even reveal more about him.  The relationship between Sunny and the detective makes for great reading even if it is an old cliche while her interaction with her parents also kept things from getting boring.  The whole fortune teller and tea leaf reading was very cool and is also something I liked getting to know about.

The plot was good and twisted a turned enough to keep me guessing.  I wasn't sure who was the killer until Sunny realised and that it was quite a surprise  It was all well thought out with many options but the story didn't get complicated.  It was just the right pace and not too hard to follow.  It was just what I needed.

There were a few 'debut' errors that need to be worked on but I liked the idea so much that I won't be holding it against the author.  After all it is the first in the series and it will take some time to iron out the kicks.  Sometimes Sunny came across as a immature but I am hoping she will grow as the series continues.  Also some of the actions in the story seemed to be a little over the top (like Sunny being made to help with the investigation) but after all cozies do excel in doing this kind of thing.

So I will be checking out the next part in this series.  The ending certainly left me wanting more.  I can't wait to see how things go for Sunny and how things work out for her buisness and the various relationships with friends and family.  Also I really want to read more about spooky Monty the cat.  He alone is enough reason to check out book two.
