Author Guest & Giveaway : Nancy Gideon

Guest Post

Carrying The Torch by Nancy Gideon

When I began the first “By Moonlight” book and realized I had waaaay too much story to fit into one novel, I envisioned doing a series around my hero and heroine, the deliciously dangerous shape-shifter, Max Savoie and NOPD detective Charlotte Caissie. Through three books, then four, their relationship went through a rollercoaster of dramatic ups and downs as they tried to find a balance behind their worlds – his criminal/hers law enforcement, his preternatural/hers human. Then my publisher wanted to branch out from the “Moonlight” books into the “Shadows” which remained in the same world , but had different heroes and heroines for each book. Readers, though they enjoyed the “Shadows” books, pouted because they wanted more Max. Finally, with REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT, I was able to bring Max and Cee Cee back . . . but would their romantic torch burn as bright?

I’d kept my favorite couple tucked into the background with their story threading through the 4th through 8th book. I worried that after being secondary characters for so long, the spark might have faded, that I didn’t have a reason to return them for a book of their own. But as fate would have it, I found a way to twist the tale so that Max no longer remembers the woman he adores or the friends and enemies that surround him. Cee Cee is a stranger to him, one he’s not sure he can trust. And she’s heartbroken, torn between that past he may not be able to recover and a future he may well chose to live without her. And the spark took flame as they began to fall in love all over again.

That makes REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT the perfect book for a reader who hasn’t yet stepped into the “By Moonlight” world. They can discover it right alongside Max as he his puts his memories together, piece by piece. And in this case, it’s better the second time around.

The Blurb

Because the road to . . .

Clever, cool and preternaturally lethal, Max Savoie is leader of a secretive shape-shifter clan, heir to a mobster’s legacy, and the love of New Orleans’ top cop . . . but he can’t remember any of them. The only way to recover his past, and his rightful place in the arms of the woman who risked all to save him, is to surrender to a mysterious visitor who could use him as a weapon against all he’d loved.

Happily-Ever-After . . .

After rescuing her mate from his ruthless captors in the North, hard-hitting Detective Charlotte Caissie is now painfully vulnerable—a stranger in his eyes . . . and in his bed. The key to his memories is locked in a tortuous past. To reclaim the strength of their passionate bond, Max must learn to trust her enough to face that darkness at her side before the threat it hides exposes the secret Cee Cee carries.

Is never smooth.

When an investigation into grisly deaths in an underground Shifter fight club points to more than just dangerous clan rivalries, Cee Cee enlists Max’s help to find a traitor in their midst while there’s still time to turn a deadly invading tide. But the cost of saving their treasured future may mean sacrificing his past. Especially when the enemy they pursue . . . might be Max, himself.

An Excerpt
The Circle 2: Blood Gate

The hairs on the back of my neck prickled when Parker moved close behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and held me against his body, but I mistrusted the gesture. No matter how wistful his thoughts outside my flat might have been, Parker was a cold-hearted manipulator.

“As rooms go, I’ve seen bigger prison cells,” he remarked. “It doesn’t matter. You can have some space in my wardrobe. You wear the same pair of jeans for a week anyway. It’s not like you need a lot of storage space.”

“With a couple coats of paint and a new bedspread, this could be nice.” I couldn’t keep the dubiousness from my voice, and he chuckled in my ear.

“It sucks and we both know it. You won’t be sleeping here anyway, will you?”

“Guess not,” I said.

He rocked me, the movement oddly soothing. The scent of his cologne was so familiar, but everything else was different. Including me. Especially me.

“You don’t have to,” he said after a moment. “Sleep with me, that is. You should spend your nights with that bastard Trigger of yours.”

“What is the point of me being your apprentice if I spend my nights with Andre?” I knew I ought to pull away from him, but I didn’t. Instead, I pressed against him, grinding my ass against his cock. His response was immediate, and he slid his hands up to cup my breasts.

“Trying to seduce your way out of talking to me?” He licked the flesh just below my earlobe, and I shivered. The twin points of his fangs scraped my skin but didn’t penetrate.

“Since when do you ever want to talk to me? Talk at me I’ll buy, but when have you ever been genuinely interested in anything I’d have to say?”

“True enough,” he agreed. The bastard. “But maybe we should change our dynamic. What do you think, sweetheart? Want to make this a different master/apprentice relationship this time around? Think you can handle it?”

“Oh, here it comes. The carrot you dangle in front of my dazzled eyes. You want me to eat your carrot, Parker? Really?”

“Eating my carrot is not what I had in mind, unless this a new euphemism for cock. Get on your knees for me, Claire. You always liked it there.” Parker let his arms fall to his side as he sucked my earlobe between his lips and nibbled. He knew that drove me crazy, damn him.

Asshole. He didn’t think I’d do what he said, but I’d show him. Only, I’d do it my way.

Author Guest & Giveaway : Andrew P. Weston

My Publishing Journey

I don’t know about you, but I’m one of those authors who has to work. I’m relatively new. I’m still learning about many of the tricks of the trade. Although I’m disciplined and focused, I do find it difficult to fit quality writing space into my spare time.

One day, I hope to rid myself of this problem by writing full time.

But that’s in the future. Until then, I need all the help I can get to make myself more accessible to my readers? But how to do that?

Well, I came across an interesting article regarding something that might help.

It’s called a Publishing Timeline...

It involves the creation of a ‘Public Persona’ that can help your readers connect to you at a more personal level. Evidently, if you’re brave enough to share something about yourselves, people relate to you more.

Now, I’m not talking about listing the various cars I’ve ever owned or my favorite vodka. (Although I do talk about them from time to time). No, you can keep the focus on your professional life... but make it personal, e.g. what experiences do you face as you actually write?

Evidently, opening yourself up a bit will achieve the following positive aspects:

· It gives reader the opportunity to learn more about you and your qualifications.
· It provides a series of posts to link to when talking about specific events or changes in the industry.
· It gives background to the bloggers, writers, events planners, potential partners, and other people who want to know more about you.
· And it establishes a foundation that will continue to build, for the space you occupy within your niche.

I’ve started to do this lately and to be honest, although I felt a bit strange revealing certain details of my life and journey, it’s been great fun.
For example, my latest novel, Kiss of the Succubus, is the second in a series that follows the life and trials of Augustus Thorne. Augustus is a Cambion, a human/demon hybrid, who fights against his nature to retain his humanity. Besieged by doubts, he is surrounded by enemies and those who would exploit him. And yet, all Augusts wants to do is find someone special, settle down, and lead a normal life.

As an experiment, I revealed more about the creative process behind Augustus Thorne. How did I come up with his character? How could I make him appear vulnerable, while emphasizing what a potent danger he is? How did I make him appealing to the reader?

By revealing personal details about ‘my process’, I found people really did find my posts and articles much more desirable. Therefore, during my week with, “Buy the Book Tours”, I’ll continue to do this, and hopefully, you’ll discover much more about Augustus, the Cambion Series, and through that, a little bit about me as well.

Think of it as my little gift to you.

As the article highlighted, if you’ve never considered this idea before, give it some thought. Creating an origin story can provide great foundation content for your blog and work to your advantage in many ways you won’t even think of.

Hopefully, the ones who are most attracted by your writing, will be the ones who really want to know more about the person “behind the keyboard.”
Make it part of the foundation of your blog. As you’ll quickly realize, it will pay off more and more each year.

So remember...share!
Until next time...
Andrew.

The Book

Having survived the double-cross planned by Samael, the demon king, and Fanon, his own spawn-father, Augustus Thorne is trying to come to terms with his lot in life. Both Fanon and Agamemnon, the king’s assassin, lay dead. And good riddance! But the only woman Augustus has ever loved in his long and lonely life is gone–driven away by the very real dangers his lifestyle brings.

However, Augustus doesn’t have the luxury of dwelling on what might have been. An insidious new threat has emerged, one that exposes humanity to a danger, the likes of which they have never faced before. Surprisingly, Augustus discovers he doesn’t have to face this threat alone.

Quite by chance, he stumbles upon a mysterious woman. Someone who appears to be the only other Cambion he has ever met. Has he found a true soul mate at last? Or is she too good to be true? Are other players involved who would still like to see Augustus Thorne dead? If so, what’s the connection? Find out for yourselves as the story continues in: The Cambion Journals

The Excerpt

A background thum-thum, thum-thum, thum-thum, pervaded the tranquil serenity of her thoughts. A muffled throb that somehow coaxed her along the current of sublime melodic reverie that was her entire world.

Everything was as it should be. She was safely cocooned within a web-like tracery of scarlet and rose warmth, and her senses were soothed by the rhythm to the point of rapture.

She had changed. Of that there was no doubt. The disconcerting other within her heart was making its presence felt. And yet, the metamorphosis it had generated caused no discomfort. No anxiety intruded upon her perfect existence.

Thum-thum, thum-thum, thum-thum.

Something encroached at the very limit of discernment—static noise, a sharpening of mental focus. Awareness impinged, and her head swarmed to the echo of a thousand whispers on the edge of perception as she blinked her eyes open.

At first, her sight refused to cooperate, and it took a moment before the liquid silver of her vision cleared. Lucidity, the likes of which she had never before witnessed in thousands of years of existence, struck her with a hammer blow.

A darkened chamber illuminated only by a handful of Bale-Lights greeted her. Plain walls welcomed her return to coherent thought, their clinical frigidity a stark contrast to the bank of high-tech medical equipment surrounding the single bed upon which she lay.

That unfamiliar sound intruded again. Thum-thum, thum-thum, thum-thum.

What the . . . ?

“Are you all right?” a disembodied voice asked.

“I . . . I think so. . . .” Her thoughts turned inward, scrutinizing the presence within her.

“Are you in pain?”

“No, not at all. It was just . . . different than what I expected . . . than what I’m used to.” Turning, she recognized the source of the questioner. “Lamia?”

“Welcome back, Mahlat-essa. How have the last three and a half months been?”

Mahlat-essa felt her breast and the newfangled steady rhythm that beat incessantly within her. “I feel . . . different.”

“That’s the effect of the Bloodstone. Is it freaking you out?” Lamia placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“No, it’s just . . . not what I’m used to.” She sensed that inward scrutiny again, and wondered what to call it. “What’s happened to me?”

“Your memories haven’t returned yet?” Lamia appeared concerned, her brow furrowing.

“Well, I recognized you, didn’t I?”

“I suppose we have to expect this. The Bloodstone is bound to mix things up for a little while yet.”

“So what’s it done?”

“It’s changed you at the molecular level, Mal. Altered what you are—”

“What I am?”

“We talked about this. Don’t you remember?”

A soupy mishmash of jumbled thoughts tumbled through Mahlat-essa’s mind. Slowly, they began to coalesce into a structured, recognizable form. Comprehension dawned.

“So the bloodline was puissant enough then?”

Lamia’s relief was obvious. “Yes, it certainly was. Only two lines still exist today, as you know. We were able to extract sufficient vitality from our subject to imbue the stone with enough potency to trigger the transmutation.”

“And there’ll be no lasting side effects?” She touched her chest again, with its disconcertingly loud beat.

“Not so far as we can determine. The stone contains sufficient potency to hold the change in stasis for about six months. It’s gradually leaking that essence into your heart at a steady rate. Once it’s depleted, you’ll either revert back to normal or have to undergo a fresh infusion.”

“Lamia, do we have a mirror here?” Mahlat-essa sat up, the speed of her sudden movement causing both shock and delight to course through her veins like an electric charge.

Smiling, Lamia fished one out of her handbag and handed it to her friend.

Mahlat-essa was slow to raise the vanity mirror to her face, and was stunned by the reflection staring back.

Gone was her devilishly beautiful and angular looks which had taken the breath away from the most resolute demons. She had been replaced by a vision of even greater exquisiteness. How?

“I look . . . I look . . .” She gasped.

“Perfect, eh? Just right for your goal.”

“My goal?” Mahlat-essa mumbled, momentarily confounded.

“Remember.” Lamia hugged her close, gushing, “You can’t recall much about your past, my dear. Your poor mother died when you were born, and you were left all alone in the world, wondering who and what you are. You grew up with the awful burden of knowing you were rejected by others for being different. For having a hunger you could barely control. The only relief you’ve ever felt is when these supernatural things are present. These demons! Venting your fury on them provides the only opportunity you have of appeasing the hunger inside. And you’re very, very good at dealing with demons. It’s something that comes naturally to a freak like you, yes?”

Memories began to unravel within Mahlat-essa’s mind.

“Yes, I’m starting to remember now! I’m different than other girls. Stronger than other humans, faster in some ways, nastier. Although I want to protect them, they shun me. I’m all alone without anyone to share my sad and solitary existence with.”

“Which is a shame of course, because our one woman execution squad just so happens to be incredibly highly sexed and armed with killer looks too. The perfect bait, eh?”

Raising the mirror again, Mahlat-essa grinned. That smile failed to reach the cold depths of her eyes.

Yes. The perfect bait. He won’t know what hit him!

Author Guest & Giveaway : Melissa Eskue Ousley

The Rabbit and the Raven Guest Post for Amberkatze’s Book Blog
by Melissa Eskue Ousley

Abby Brown, C’aislingaer of Cai Terenmare

Encountering the queen of Cai Terenmare, a magical parallel realm, Abby Brown discovered that her dreams come true. David Corbin, the handsome young man she sees in her dreams, really exists. But so do the monsters than haunt her nightmares.

Abby is a cai aislingstraid (c’aislingaer for short). Cai aislingstraid can be translated as a soul who walks in dreams. Abby learned that she has the ability to see the future and to connect with another person’s soul in dreams. Queen Eulalia is also a c’aislingaer and teaches Abby about her abilities.

A c’aislingaer is an empath, which means Abby is sensitive to other people’s emotions. Being perceptive in this way can be an advantage in figuring out what motivates people or being able to sense when people are lying. At times, however, this ability can be a disadvantage. When someone is experiencing a strong emotion, Abby finds herself easily overwhelmed by the force of the connection. There is a debilitating effect, sapping her energy and leaving her physically and emotionally drained. In mastering her abilities, Abby will have to learn to shield herself from strong negative emotions and people with manipulative personalities.

Tynan Tierney is a charismatic sociopath who recognizes Abby’s abilities and wants to recruit her to his cause, stealing the throne from David and ruling Cai Terenmare. Although Abby is strongly connected to David, it is not easy to resist Tierney’s advances. Handsome and charming, he will use every weapon in his arsenal to convince Abby to join him so he can combine his power with hers, ensuring victory over the young king. If Tierney wins the war, he will bring the kingdom to its knees and release his dark army to feed on humanity.

Abby can’t let that happen. She must shield herself from Tierney’s tricks and protect David, the boy she loves. But to keep David safe, she has to tell him the truth about her connection to Tierney. She soon learns that lying is easier than honesty because sometimes the truth hurts the people you love. But she can’t fight Tierney alone. She needs David and her other friends if she doesn’t want to succumb to the Darkness. It was easier when she thought of Tierney as a monster. Seeing him as a person, a man who wasn’t always evil, is hard. Because as much as she’d like to deny it, Abby and Tierney do have a connection, and that terrifies her.

The Excerpt

Out of the shadows of the labyrinth, a massive beast emerged. He was bigger than Calder had been, but while Calder had been a hairless, muscled brute, this feline creature was lean, muscled in a way that was beautiful and terrible at the same time. He had the look of a sophisticated and efficient killer—covered in thick, shiny fur with black-on-black stripes. He approached Abby with a menacing deliberateness, bearing long, primeval fangs.

“Hello, Rabbit,” the creature said as he circled her slowly. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Abby could feel the beast’s hot breath on her skin. Don’t show fear, she thought, planting her feet in a fighting stance and drawing herself up to look taller, brawnier. Look him straight in the eye. If you’re going to die, at least have a little dignity about it. She stared into his eyes and spoke his name: “Tierney.”

The creature stared back, eyeing Abby’s clenched jaw and defensive stance, and then he smiled apologetically. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” Tierney said. “I forget this face can be, shall we say, rather off-putting. Allow me to present a more pleasing visage.” His form changed, melting away like smoke, leaving black ashes lingering in the air. In the creature’s place stood a handsome young man with dark eyes—nothing like the beast he had just been.

Don’t be fooled by the illusion, Abby told herself. He’s the same monster he was before—it’s just a mask. She stood her ground, infusing her voice with authority. “On the contrary. You know that face is off-putting. That’s why you wore it.”

To her surprise, Tierney started laughing—not a mean, condescending laugh, but one of genuine, unguarded amusement. It wasn’t quite the response Abby had expected.

“Well, now,” he chuckled, “you are a surprisingly perceptive one. Do you know why I’m here?”

“I assume it’s to get to the Solas Beir by killing me,” Abby said.

“Oh, come now, Rabbit, I’m hurt. I have absolutely no such plans. None at all,” Tierney replied.

“I have trouble believing that—your reputation precedes you,” she said.

“Well, dear Rabbit, a reputation is really quite subjective, don’t you think? And you must concede that your sources may be a bit biased when it comes to me.” He began circling her again, looking her up and down. “Actually, I’m here because I heard a very interesting story about you. And I must say, I think there’s more to you than I was originally led to believe. I heard that an ordinary human girl rescued the Lightbearer by killing a Blood Shadow—and not just any Blood Shadow, mind you, but one of the strongest among us. And I wondered to myself, an ordinary human girl? How can that be?”

Abby noticed that Tierney used the term “Lightbearer” rather than David’s formal title of Solas Beir. She didn’t think it was an accident. In fact, she was certain that Tynan Tierney never said or did anything that wasn’t calculated. “What is it you want, exactly?” she demanded, putting her hands on her hips.

“Only to see if the story was true. I can see now that you’ve been underestimated. Clearly, you are no ordinary human girl. You are turning out to be much more interesting than I thought you would be, pretty little c’aislingaer,” he said.

Abby glared at him. “Thanks, but you can’t fool me into falling for flattery.”

Suddenly Tierney stepped close to Abby, his arms pulling her to him, his breath on her neck as he whispered in her ear. “No, indeed I cannot. For I have met many a fool, and you are not one.”

He was so warm, and his touch made her skin tingle, much to her chagrin. She fought to show no response, reminding herself to keep her guard up.

He continued, his lips almost grazing her skin as he talked. “What I want, Abigail, is to show you the truth—to help you see my side of the story so you can decide for yourself if my so-called reputation is deserved.” He pulled away suddenly, his head cocked to one side as if he had heard something.

Abby heard nothing.

Tierney turned back, his dark eyes on her. “Your boyfriend is coming. Better not let him catch you fraternizing with the enemy. Until we meet again, little Rabbit.” Taking her hand, he held it to his lips, kissing it with a disarming tenderness. Then he was gone—not in some magic puff of smoke, but simply not there anymore.

Abby heard the crack of a twig breaking as someone approached. Rather than feeling a sense of relief, she felt oddly guilty, like she had been caught in the act of doing something wrong. She had just survived what should have been a lethal encounter with a monster, but instead of being frightened of Tierney, she found herself attracted to him. And that terrified her.

A copy of this book was given to me by Buy the Book Tours when the author was a guest on my blog.  I try not to take on too many review books lately because I just don't have the time to read them all but this one sounded interesting and I do love a good cozy mystery.  When I finally got around to reading this one I noticed it wasn't, as I thought, the first in the series.  This put me off a little but the excerpt I had already read made me want to give this one a chance even if I had missed out on the first two books.

I instantly liked Cherry and she reminded me a little of Stephanie Plum but slightly tamer.  The mystery was interesting and well written but it was the wit and quirky background story that kept me reading. Cherry was trying to solve a murder while having a full house, trying to keep her ex-boyfriends under control, do her job and also stop a smear campaign against her not so good name.  There were a few other things going on too and it made for fun reading while Cherry tried to figure out who the bad guy really was.

This was a nice cozy mystery and I will be adding books one and two to my wishlist.  I am sure some of the surprises have been ruined for me by not starting at the beginning but I really want to see how things started and find out more about the whole situation that has developed up until this third installment.  Also I found Cherry to be such a cool character that I want to have some more adventures with her.

DIYing a Heroine’s Clothes

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Amberkatze. I’m so thrilled to be here!

The heroine of the Cherry Tucker Mystery series is an artist. Actually a classically trained portraitist, from a small, Southern country town called Halo. Her tough, redneck roots and creative ingenuity help her solve crimes, attract the wrong sort of men, and outfit herself in themed outfits. As an artist, she’s always broke, but with her penchant for interesting dress, Cherry uses her DIY craft skills to match her wardrobe to her personality.

In Hijack in Abstract, her third mystery, Cherry wears a variety of DIY clothing. I thought I’d share the outfits, but show how a real DIYer could use Cherry’s crazy ideas to make their own unique embellishments.

To visit her rival, Shawna Branson, Cherry wears an American flag t-shirt beaded in tangerine, black, and kelly green she deems complementary colored patriotism.

The non-fiction DIY: You need beads (smaller seed beads are easier), a beading needle (long and thin as possible), and beading thread (nylon). Thinner fabric is better because beading needles are so thin. Trace the design on the cloth with fabric chalk. Double your thread through the needle, knot the end, and pull several stitches into the fabric to secure it. You can add one to three beads at a time. (More is faster, but less is more accurate and easier for them to become loose). Push the beads until they’re touching the fabric and pull the thread taut between stitches.

An orange tank dress decorated with a puff painted oversized neon paintbrush. Cherry considers this appropriate wear for an interview with a rich patron who wants his portrait painted.

The non-fiction DIY: Applying puff paint is pretty squeeze-out-of-the-bottle simple. But here are some tips to not look like a third grader applied your paint. Prewash the fabric without fabric softener. Iron the fabric lengthwise to find the true middle, particularly if you’re painting a symmetrical design. Put a piece of cardboard between the back and front of the shirt so the paint doesn’t bleed through. To make “puffier” paint, hold a steam iron on the highest setting over the painted area (without touching) until the paint rises. Don’t make long, continuos lines. Use three to four inch lines that aren’t connected. Or make a series of dots and drag your applicator tip through to make a line, like this crafter did.

Denim skirt fringed in black leather to a trucker bar, The Gearjammer. Unfortunately, the fringe gets torn in the subsequent bar fight. And because she falls wearing a skirt, she flashes her panties to the crowd. I recommend wearing jeans in bar fights, which you can also fringe.

The non-fiction DIY: Faux leather is difficult to sew because it’s thick and slick. Here’s some tips I’ve found. One DIY blogger uses a paper shredder to score faux-leather scraps, making it easier to cut. She stops the shredder a half inch from the top and reverses the shredder setting. I also love how she uses snap-type barrettes to keep the leather from slipping. http://www.sew4home.com/tips-resources/sewing-tips-tricks/lush-plush-trends-fabriccom-sewing-faux-leather

A tie-dyed skirt made from a man’s t-shirt. Which disturbs the lawyer’s monochromatic wearing office manager. But makes a super comfy skirt!

The non-fiction DIY: This is actually a really cool project. Consider XL men’s size for length, not waist size. You can dye it or not. One method is to cut across from armpit to armpit and you’re left with a rectangle. Use elastic thread and a sewing machine for “shirring” the fabric, making multiple bands for a stretchy waist band. Steam the elastic with an iron to tighten the waist. Shirring will take about two inches of the original width of the fabric.

Another method, I’ve not tested, is to sew the t-shirt sleeves shut and push them inside the shirt for pockets. Then snip the collar and slit the shoulder seams, just enough to fit your waist. Add a tie-string or snap to hold the skirt on your waist.

I hope your readers enjoyed these DIY tips! Do you have any great DIY clothing ideas?

Humor, Hijackings and a Handful of Hunks . . .

With a classical series sold and a portrait commissioned, Cherry Tucker’s art career is in Georgia overdrive. But when the sheriff asks Cherry to draw a composite sketch of a hijacker, her life takes a hairpin as the composite leads to a related murder, her local card-sharking buddy Max Avtaikin becomes bear bait and her nemesis labels the classical series “pervert art.”

Cherry’s jamming gears between trailer parks, Atlanta mansions, and trucker bars searching for the hijacker who left a widow and orphan destitute. While she seeks to help the misfortunate and save her local reputation, Cherry’s hammer down attitude has her facing the headlights of an oncoming killer.

The Excerpt

There are many places you don’t want to be at zero dark thirty, but I’ve got a personal top three. One is the ER. Second is a police station. The third is your ex-boyfriend’s bedroom.

Thank God Almighty I was not in number three. Stupid does catch me occasionally, but not this night. I was nowhere near an ex-boyfriend’s bedroom.
At two forty-five in the morning, I found myself in number two. The Forks County Sheriff’s Office to be accurate. My cornflower blues were a bit bloodshot and blurry, but my grin matched Shep Peterson’s, who also found himself in a similar location. However, Shep had a drunk tank grin. Mine was more of a self-congratulatory grin, born from knowing that finally someone in Forks County had recognized my accomplishments in the art world. Never mind the phone call that woke me from a dead sleep and near gave me a heart attack.

Or that I had to drive my sister’s Firebird because her vehicle was blocking my driveway. Or that I now sat in the junior officers’ room with a cold cup of coffee and had just realized I had forgotten to comb my bed-head designed blonde cowlicks in my bleary-eyed haste.

And to put on a bra.

The Forks County Sheriff, Uncle Will, needed my expertise. That’s all that mattered. And I was going to get paid.

Needed me for what was still a bit vague. I hoped nothing needing brushed hair and a bra.

* * * * *

With my messenger bag bumping my back, I hugged my chest, figuring it best not to give an extra show to Shep and the boys. I followed Uncle Will down the hallway, waiting while he unlocked a door. The door opened and two faces turned to look at us. One I didn’t recognize, but judging by his despondent expression, I figured he was probably in a mess of trouble. The other person, another deputy, I identified immediately. Hard not to recognize those brown ochre curls with the highlights I had decided were transparent oxide-red lake. Or the lean, muscled body, much like Michelangelo’s David. Or by the strong jaw buttressing two adorable dimples that made a rare showing.

Unfortunately, I knew Deputy Luke Harper a little too well.

He gave me a scant nod and turned back to the perp.

My hand snuck back to my hair and yanked on a particularly tall cowlick in back. I gritted my teeth and gave myself a quick lecture not to make a scene. We had aired our irreconcilable differences behind the local roadhouse, Red’s County Line Tap, a few months ago and I had not quite recovered.
“That’s Tyrone Coderre,” said Uncle Will. “He’s going to give you a description to draw. We need a composite sketch.”

Uncle Will stopped me before I entered the room and pulled me to the side. “Can I leave Deputy Harper in there with you or do I need to call in another officer? Harper’s the one who picked up Coderre, so this is his investigation.”

“I’m quite capable of separating my personal and professional life,” I said, tilting my chin so I could eyeball Uncle Will. “You might want to ask the same of him.”

“I trust Luke not to screw up his job. You are another story.”

I gave him a “why, I never” gasp.

“I’m going to be watching through the two-way.” He tapped my messenger bag. “Lucky for you, I don’t know other artists to call during the middle of the night. Wouldn’t want to be accused of nepotism. But I want a sketch while the memory is still fresh in Coderre’s mind. Don’t disappoint me, Cherry.”

“So, this is an important investigation?” Excitement zipped through my veins and made my fingers tingle. “I won’t let you down. You can even deputize me if you want.”

Uncle Will chuckled. “Just draw us a good picture. That’s plenty helpful.”

“Yes, sir,” I said and snuck by him to enter the room. I nodded to the man in the black sweat suit behind the table and held out my hand. “Hello, Mr. Coderre. I’m Cherry Tucker, a local artist.”

“Don’t shake his hand,” barked Luke. “Are you crazy?”

Tyrone Coderre’s cuffed hands retreated below the table, and I blew out a hard breath.

Looked like it was going to be a long night. At least the criminal had manners.

Couldn’t say the same for the cop.

Author Guest & Giveaway : PJ Schnyder

Bharguest: Origins

When I was writing the first in the Triton Experiment series, Hunting Kat, my editor asked if we wanted to give Captain Devron Rishkillian a more serious personality. And Dev does have his somber side, but not something most would encounter. No. For Hunting Kat and the subsequent Fighting Kat, I wanted Dev to be the clear Mentor-in-shining-armor.

The reason for it became clear in Fighting Kat when I introduced Bharguest. At first, I was asked if he was to be a competing love interest. But no, I had a different plan for him. In a lot of ways, a much more convoluted roadmap. Instead of an anti-hero I wanted to create an anti-Mentor for Kaitlyn. I wanted to create someone who would lead her where she didn't want to go. Where she'd have to go to survive but she might not like who she'd become in the process.

And I wanted to give Kaitlyn someone to go against in the future.

Bharguest will come back in the Triton Experiment series. Fighting Kat will not be his only appearance. And you can bet he'll push Kaitlyn to limits no good person would ever push her to. Because sometimes being good isn't enough to keep you alive.

The Book

Book two of The Triton Experiment

Intergalactic mercenary Kat Darah has been ordered to keep her shape-shifting ability a secret from everyone but those closest to her, for her own safety. She’s learned how to control the feral rage…for the most part. But when Lieutenant Rygard’s military unit goes missing, she’ll use every skill she has to find her man.

Lt. Christopher Rygard has witnessed his girl shift, and he still wants her. After Kat rescues him from alien clutches, he’d like nothing more than to wrap her in his arms again, but his first duty is to his men. And half of them have been shipped off-planet to be sold as slaves.

Kat and Rygard will need to form a new team to go deep undercover, posing as gladiators and learning to fight together in order to survive. In the arena, it’s all about who is the strongest predator…

See how it all began in Hunting Kat.

Chapter One

“Unless you are burnt, broken or bleeding, take yourself out of my medical bay.” Kaitlyn didn’t bother to turn as the footsteps paused in her doorway.

“No follow up threat?” Dev’s voice surprised her. The footsteps hadn’t matched her captain’s usual swagger and the air circulation carried scent up and away too quickly for it to reach her. Considering the multitude of aromas her enhanced sense of smell forced upon her when someone appeared in her doorway, usually shot and bleeding or in some stage of infection, the powerful circulation could be a blessing.

Even if it did allow her captain to surprise her. She didn’t turn away from the observation window. “The only people on board are crew. They all know I won’t hesitate to tear a man apart, even if I do have to put him back together again.”

They’d seen her do it. Course, it hadn’t been a crew member and that particular fugitive had tried to kill her. The bounty on the man required him alive so she’d still had to stitch him up afterward.

“Convenient, you being ship’s medic and all.” Dev stepped into her space anyway. “Course, this is my ship and I am captain, so I could make the point that it’s my medical bay and you are one of my crew.”

“You could.” But it’d be for a reason. Her captain didn’t play territory games without one. With her, territory meant a lot more than the average humanoid. Still, she had human logic, she could use it. “In response to your hypothetical point, I’d say you gave me this position when I became part of your crew and thus ceded this territory. Still my facility and personal space. Besides, you put in this window specifically for me.”

“We had a particularly good haul from before I got that installed, made a fair chunk of cred from almost dying. Made sense to invest it in the ship.”
She raised an eyebrow and watched his reflection in the window.

“Modification to the hull of a spaceship never comes cheap and a window isn’t an upgrade to the ship’s structural integrity unless you invested in extremely high quality materials.”

“Which I did.”

“It’s got a perch perfect for sitting and staring out into whatever.” She turned from the window and let her legs dangle over the edge as she faced him. “Too high for any normal human to get up here and enjoy.”

And she needed this space, needed this window. The view into infinity eased the pent up frustration of the beast within. Lately, she needed peace however she could find it. The panther aspect of her lurked restless and irritable beneath her skin. Ready to break loose.

Planting her hands on the ledge, she hopped off for a drop of several meters, landing on her feet with ease. The distance was farther than a human would willingly jump too. She hadn’t had to worry about that for almost four years now.

Straightening, she looked her captain up and down before locking her gaze with his. The predator aspect rose in a wave as the force of her personality crashed into his. Confidence, charisma, command presence, people defined it in their own way. It wasn’t something limited by words or descriptions. It was something a person experienced, a gut reaction, in any interaction with anyone else.

Her captain had won her respect and her trust years ago, but she still tended to…no, enjoyed butting heads with him on occasion.
