Leslee Stanton Nix—aka “Nixy”—thought moving to small-town Lilyvale, Arkansas, would be about as thrilling as watching paint dry. But keeping up with her retired Aunt Sherry and her troublemaking housemates—collectively known as the Silver Six—has proven to be as exciting as it is exasperating.
It hasn't been a very productive couple of weeks in regards to my reading. I have been in a bit of a slump and hopefully this wonderful book has pulled me out of it! Because this is the first book I have managed to read in the last two weeks. Nothing else has interested me, nothing else could grab me and I certainly couldn't be bothered to pick up anything else to read. However when I realised that this second book in the new cozy mystery series by Nancy Haddock was out I suddenly felt like reading again. Once again this author has brightened my day!
Now I know Nancy from way back when! She wrote an amazing vampire series that I miss terribly! So when her new cozy mystery series came out last year I was eager to start it and I remember enjoying it so much that I wanted to get a sequel a lot faster than the author can write! Now that sequel is here and I nearly missed it. I feel ashamed to say that even though I had it on pre-order it managed to get past me and lay in wait for a couple of weeks. It was however worth the wait and I spent a nice few hours in bed curled up with it.
I needed a few chapters to get my head around all the characters. After a year it is normal to have forgotten who is who. Especially if you read a lot of books. Once things were back into place I could start enjoying this wonderful sequel in a very unique and well thought out series. It took a few chapters to get to the murder mystery but I have to admit that I was actually more interested in Nixy and everyone else anyway and enjoyed the chance to hang out before the sleuthing started.
What else can I say without giving the whole plot away? I can only recommend you try this series out! It's a great cozy mystery and has so many cute and interesting things going on. This book even saw the arrival of some fascinating pets (even though as an Amber and as a cat person....well it was weird being the dog!) and of course the whole craft shop angle is not only fun but inspiring. I can't wait for more and look forward to visiting this lovely town again and finding out more about the secrets it holds and the people within it!
The Blurb : There isn’t much crime in Lilyvale, Arkansas, but local authorities have their hands full with Ms. Sherry Mae Stanton Cutler and her housemates—a crafty group of retirees who’ve dubbed themselves the Silver Six. But when Sherry Mae’s niece, Nixy, arrives to keep them in line, Lilyvale also plays host to a killer.
When Leslee Stanton “Nixy” Nix gets the latest call from Lilyvale detective Eric Shoar, she knows it means trouble. There’s been another kitchen explosion at her Aunt Sherry’s farmhouse, and the dreamy-voiced detective has had enough. If Nixy doesn’t check on her aunt in person, the Silver Six could become wards of the court. But the trouble Nixy finds in Lilyvale is not at all what she expects.
The seniors are hosting a folk art festival at the farmhouse, featuring Sherry’s hand-woven baskets, when land developer Jill Elsman arrives to bully Nixy’s aunt into selling the property. When Jill is later found dead in the cemetery, Sherry is suspected of weaving a murder plot, and it’s up to Nixy and the Silver Six to untangle the truth.
My Thoughts :
I came across author Nancy Haddock a few years ago when I read her series about vampire Cesca Marinelli. After the series finished I was always on the look out for new work from the author. Therefore I really enjoyed her short story in the Entangled anthology. Medium Rare was a little different from the Oldest Vampire series but I loved the cozy mixed with the paranormal and hoped that the author would keep going in this direction. So when I heard about Basket Case I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. I was excited! There was no paranormal twists involved but I love a good cozy and the blurb looked and so did the cover. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like the story and started to worry. I was a little conflicted about Nixy and didn't warm to her straight away. However when she got to Lilyvale and really started to get involved with things I finally started to like her and when I met the other characters I knew I was going to love the book. Together with the location and the other little bits and pieces this turned out to be a very nice cozy experience. Plot wise this may turn out to be slow going for some cozy readers. There is enough happening at the beginning of the book to keep you interested and reading but it takes some time before an actual murder takes place. Now not all cozies need a body to be a good mystery but it is expected! Despite the late arrival of that angle the whole Jill Elsman business made for good reading and it was interesting to see what she was up to and why. The main characters include the Silver Six, who are a wonderful group of retirees that give this new series its name. It takes a little time to get used to them all and tell them apart but they are lovely characters who you know have a lot of stories to tell and will definitely manage to get into more trouble in the future. Another main character, Detective Schoar was, like Nixy, not someone I warmed to straight away but when the plot got deadly he started to show a different side that I liked. I am sure he also has some tales to tell! What made this first in the series extremely likable is you could tell there is more to come. It was obvious there are more stories to be told involving these characters. The author builds up a lovely setting and fills it with nice people while making sure you feel at home. There is always a lot to take in when you step into a new series but the writer guides you the whole time and leaves you looking forward to your next visit. A big thumbs up for this new series. It will be interesting to see what others think of Basket Case when it releases in September. I know I am eager to visit Lilyvale again and am really keen to see what the future brings for the Silver Six, Nixy and Det. Schoar.
To celebrate the release Entangled, Nancy Haddock, Edie Ramer and Misty Evans explained how the book came to be and why they chose The Breast Cancer Research Foundation as the good cause for the proceeds to go to. They also very kindly put up three copies as prizes and I decided to also offer three copies. It is all for a good cause afterall!

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from author Nancy Haddock. This isn't an unusual occurrence as we have been emailing each other on a pretty regular basis for a few years now. However this email was different. This email made me jump for joy. Not only was Nancy contributing a short story to an anthology but the best part was all the proceeds for the book is going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
To know that some of my favourite authors have come together to do something so amazing really made me proud. I could only show my support by reviewing Entangled and offering to make a special event for the book to celebrate the release!
Everyone has a story to tell when it comes to breast cancer. My grandmother fought breast cancer and like all women should, I get myself screened and check myself in the shower regularly. It may just be another disease but hopefully one day there will be a cure. Buying Entangled could help bring this cure closer and it is a great read as well!
So I hope you enjoy the following insight to how the anthology Entangled got made. Edie Ramer, Misty Evans and Nancy Haddock all talk about why and how the book came about and what it meant to them to be a part of it.
Also make sure you enter the contest at the end of the event! You could win a copy of Entangled!

Edie Ramer:
Last April, I emailed Misty and casually mentioned that I’d like to set up a short story anthology and give the money to a charity. I'd like to do a lot of things some day--clean all my closets, visit Europe for a summer and Australia for a winter. But Misty isn't a "some day" type of person. She's a "today" type. She emailed me back and said, "Let's do it." I said okay, and we were off and running.
Misty Evans:
Edie and I are in a couple of groups together and I’ve always been wowed by her mad writing and people skills. When she suggested we put together an anthology with proceeds going to charity, I jumped on the opportunity.
Edie Ramer:
It happened so fast and so smoothly, I'm a bit awed. Misty and I both write paranormal romance, so that was an easy pick. She chose the Halloween theme to unify the stories. I'm a breast cancer survivor, and one of my critique partners has been fighting breast cancer for fifteen years. She's my hero. That was my choice for the charity, and Misty immediately agreed.
Misty Evans:
I lost an aunt to breast cancer, and one of my childhood friends recently went through a double mastectomy. When I worked in health care, I managed a breast and cervical cancer screening program for women without insurance, and saw how desperate the need was for more screenings, education and research. Breast cancer affects so many of us, it’s a cause near and dear to our hearts.
Edie Ramer:
I think that the charity was the reason so many amazing writers signed on for this. Every writer has been wonderful to work with, and each has written a fantastic story. I'm very proud of what we've done.
Misty Evans:
Along with all the great stories that were donated, Stacia Kane contributed the foreword, Laura Morrigan created the cover art, and Lori Devoti provided formatting.
Nancy Haddock:
Edie and Misty are cherished friends, so I would have jumped at any project for any cause they spearheaded. But breast cancer – along with other cancers – runs in my family. I also have sisters-of-the-heart who are triumphing over the disease including a sister-in-law and numerous writer friends. Breast cancer is personal.
So, when Misty invited me to the project, my first thought was, “I’m so there!” My second thought was, “Can I write a short story?” Yikes! I’d not turned my hand to short stories since college, but the anthology was important enough to give it my best shot. As it happens, I’m pleased with my story contribution, and tickled silly to be in company with such amazing authors. My personal thanks to everyone who donated time and talent to the anthology, and my eternal gratitude to all those readers who by it!!

My Review :
Anyone who is a regular reader of Amberkatze's Book Blog will know I am not a huge fan of anthologies. They always seem to look so tasty from the outside and a few cool authors contributing usually manage to tempt me. However every time I end up kicking myself for wasting my time and money on a book filled with ten stories of which I only liked two.
Entangled however was an anthology I can honestly say I enjoyed. For a start there are four reasons to read this collection of stories.
1. Jennifer Estep
2. Nancy Haddock
3. Cynthia Eden
And the biggest reason of all...
4. All the proceeds of this book are going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Everyone has a story to tell when it comes to breast cancer. It has touched everyone's life at some point and it is a subject that we gals all have to be aware of. So I wouldn't have cared which authors were involved in this anthology. Entangled is a must buy. I totally admire the authors for adding their contributions to this book even though they wouldn't get paid. And they added such great stories!
After a foreword from Stacia Kane the anthology kicks off with a nice Frosty story from Jennifer Estep. I really enjoyed her first Mythos Academy book, Touch of Frost, so it was great to get another peek into this new world that Jennifer has created. It may be YA but it is very original and of course brilliantly written. This short story was too short for my liking but a nice taste of what is to come in book two of the series.
The anthology continues with quite a good selection of stories that all seem to have a Halloween feel to them in one way or another. Some of the contributions were better than others but there were a couple that stood out. Cynthia Eden didn't disappoint with her tale which included vampires, werewolves and a blood moon. While other stories introduced witches who add their magic to their cupcakes and can change people into cats. All in all it was a wonderful mixture of the paranormal and of course some great romance was included.
However my favourite story in this collection has to be the short story by Nancy Haddock. I am a fan of ghost hunter stories and Nancy hit the nail on the head with her contribution. I can only hope that the story will evolve into a full novel or series because it was super! It totally took me by surprise and for me it was the best of the bunch.
Buy this anthology. Not only is it full of great stories but it is all for a good cause. Entangled releases on the 12th of September and is only available in E-book formats. So read it on your computer or phone if you have to. Just give it a chance.

Here is a little info about each book on offer this month. Just click on the book title and author to see my review -
Well in the sidebar <--- there is this poll. You vote for the book you would most like to win. I pick a name from the subscibers list and that person wins the book with the most votes. So you may not even win the book you voted for!
To subscribe to Amberkatze's Book Blog all you have to do is use the box in the sidebar <--- or at the bottom of this post. Everyone who is already subscribed will be entered in the contest as well as new subscribers. If you have not confirmed your email address then you will not be added to the draw!!! The poll will stay open for votes until Thursday 9th of June 2011 4pm (all times are in Central European Time). The winner will be announced later that day.
