67) Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep

The Blurb :

I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.

Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?

It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.

My Review :

Jennifer Estep is one of the leading ladies in Paranormal Urban Fantasy and her Elemental Assassin series rocks big time. I know I felt a little excited and worried when I heard that the author was branching out with a YA series. Would the author manage to come up with something as good as her adult aimed novels? I hoped she wouldn't fall into the cliché trap that so many YA books do. However my worries have slipped away. Now. after three books into the Mythos Academy, I can strongly say that Jennifer Estep is rocking this genre too!

This third installment in the series starts off with a trip to the museum. This sounds extremely boring until some Reapers appear. Within pages the book explodes into a mass of action, destruction and death. It leaves Gwen shocked and with even more questions than before but it is only the beginning of the excellent story that the author, once again, manages to weave for our reading pleasure.

I don't want to give the plot away but I can tell you it is a good one. However any lover of Jennifer's work will know that she always delivers a great story that you can't help but devour as quick as possible. The only problem with her books is the wait till the next tasty dish. if I could live on the delights the author serves up I would never need to eat again. They are always filling and delicious.

Once again I have to mention how much I like the concept of this series. Not only does it have a talking sword and some cool mythical elements but it also has a range of special abilities added to it. Gwen's personal gift is only the tip of the iceberg in this fantasy series that has so much depth to it that you may find it hard to climb back out of the pages.

Worried about this being too YA? Well I wouldn't be if I was you. There is a little romance but the teenager aspect is hardly an issue most of the time and any fans of Jennifer's other work should give this series a try. This series is on my must read list as well as anything else the author writes. I am loving her unique angle on things and her fresh concepts. The genre could have gotten boring if writers like Jennifer Estep hadn't come along!
