Author Interview with Stephen Zimmer (Kindle up for grabs!)

Stephen Zimmer is an author & film maker who has been a friend of Amberkatze's Book Blog for a while now. So it is always nice to have the author come over for a nice coffee and to catch up ;)

So to make the week a little bit more enjoyable here on Amberkatze's Book Blog I am sharing my latest interview with the author. I hope you all enjoy it and will even check out his books. Pay special attention to the anthology Stephen is working on! There maybe some authors you recognise involved.

Oh and Stephen has a bit of a Contest going on till the 9th of September. There is a KINDLE up for grabs!!! And an Amazon goft certificate among other things! So go enter! It doesn't cost anything! ;)

-------------------------

Amber - Hello Stephen! Welcome back to Amberkatze's Book Blog. It is great to have you here on the blog again. Maybe you can start things off by telling us a little about what you have been up to since the last time you visited?

Stephen – It’s so great to be back! It has definitely been very, very busy since my last stop here. My main two series have progressed. I’m up to three titles in each series now, with The Seventh Throne released for the Rising Dawn Saga in August of last year, and Spirit of Fire released for the Fires in Eden series in June of this year. I also have some short story collections on eBook established now that are affiliated with both series, the Annals of the Rising Dawn and the Chronicles of Ave. Both of these are going to grow a lot in the near future. I recently got word that my third Harvey and Solomon steampunk short story was picked up for Dreams of Steam III, from Kerlak Publications. It is a very special piece entitled “Gift of Light”, and has a deeply personal element to it. Finally, I am about to release some short stories in the horror genre that are part of a themed collection. So the writing has definitely been going well.

On the filmmaker side of the spectrum, I just agreed to direct a new science fiction short film, based on another author’s short story. We will be shooting it this coming December, and I am really excited about getting a new film project.

Amber - I know you are working on an anthology. What is the title and theme?

Stephen – I was able to instigate a new anthology project brought to me by James R. Tuck, the author of the Deacon Chalk stories for Kensington. James was looking to do a dark, gritty, hard-hitting sword and sorcery anthology, of the kind that fans of Robert E. Howard would feel at home with.

I love sword and sorcery, and we’ve got a great sword and sorcery author at Seventh Star Press already in the person of Steven Shrewsbury, whose Gorias La Gaul novels and short stories are simply fantastic. It definitely was a great fit for SSP, and we were able to get things worked out for the anthology which is titled Thunder on the Battlefield.

It will involve sword and sorcery tales in ancient world or even post-apocalyptic settings, and James is encouraging a diversity in cultural settings. So you might see something set in places similar to the steppes of Russia, the mountains of Japan, or the grasslands of sub-saharan Africa, for example. I am really looking forward to this one.

Amber - Are you editing the book or/and contributing a story?

Stephen – James R. Tuck is the sole editor on the project, and he has full say over what stories are included. 100% editorial control, as do the editors of our other anthologies. As for me, I am honored to say that James has asked me to send in a story, and as I am also a sword and sorcery fan, am excited about doing one for this anthology. I have a particular character I would like to debut that I think would be a great fit. Readers will really like this fiery Norse gal… hint, hint! LOL

Amber - Which authors are involved so far?

Stephen – I honestly don’t know about most of the authors James is thinking of. All of that is up to James. He has mentioned a few possibilities in conversation, and I believe he has asked Steven Shrewsbury to submit a story, which I know will be a perfect fit. But at this time I really don’t know in terms of confirmed authors.

Amber - How did the authors for the anthology come together?

Stephen – James has open submissions going until January 31, 2013, so there are some slots available for writers interested in being considered. He also has several slots that are allocated by invitation, and I can’t wait to see who James ends up getting in that regard.

Amber - I always imagine the authors involved in an anthology getting together and having a cool nice out together and exchanging ideas for the book. I guess in reality it is all emails? No meeting up?

Stephen – It would be wonderful to get everyone together for something like this. That would be ideal for sure! But this one will probably end up involving authors from all over, perhaps international in nature, so it is a bit of an impossibility to gather everyone together.

Amber - Are there any other authors you would really like to work with?

Stephen – In terms of who I think could deliver a capable story for this anthology, the list would be sizeable. It would probably end up being a ten volume anthology, LOL. Seriously, though, I do think Steven Shrewsbury is star-caliber in this particular genre, and he would be one of my first hopes, which is why I’m thrilled James invited him.

Amber - How do you start a story? Do you plan everything out before hand or just start and see where things take you?

Stephen – I’m a bit of a hybrid in that I have a firm vision of where I want the story to go, the destination, and the core path of getting there. I always leave myself flexible for subplots and new characters to emerge, but I really believe you have to have an idea about your destination when you are setting out on a new project. There really needs to be a frame to build onto.

Amber - What about locations? Is it easy finding a place to base your work in?

Stephen –This part is not difficult for me, as my work reflects a very diverse range of settings. Ave, in the Fires in Eden series, has lands based on cultures all across our world, as well as some completely invented cultures and places. So I have a lot to draw upon. I am as comfortable writing in a medieval Japan setting as I am doing a story set in something like the Byzantine Empire. I have a real passion for medieval history and have studied numerous medieval periods across the globe. Lots of options to work with whenever I’m developing new threads or stories.

Amber - Names are sometimes unusual, normal or special. How do you pick names for your characters?

Stephen – Some are historical, some are invented. It is kind of a mix of things. I’ll sometimes take something from another language, as I did with the Unguhur of the Fires in Eden series which is derived from the German word for Monster. Similarly, the Trogens of the same series are derived from the Swedish word for loyal. Then you see names like Aethelstan or Aelfric when you go into Saxany, names that are more historically based. Then there are times when I just come up with something that has a strong, appropriate sound, as with An-Ki characters like Godral or Sargor in the Rising Dawn Saga. It is a real mix of things, as far as the naming goes. I just go with what feels right for the particular context.

Amber - What paranormal/fantasy creatures are you dying to fit into a story but you haven't managed to fit in yet?

Stephen – Eastern dragons come to mind immediately, though that is coming very, very soon. There are some other creatures from ancient China and Japan that really appeal to me, such as the Nian in the former, and the Nue from the latter. Both are really fascinating mythical creatures that readers are definitely going to encounter at some point in my tales.

Amber - Is there a paranormal creature you just don't like, and would never use in your books?

Stephen – I haven’t come across any that I would never use! Nor do I have any particular antipathy towards a particular paranormal creature. There are some that I think have been done so much that the edge and mystique about them has been worn thin, to the point that they’ve lost the power that they once had, such as vampires and werewolves. They’ve both become very watered down, far more romantic these days than monstrous, as they were in folklore and legend.

Amber - What has been taking up your free time lately? Read any good books? Watching anything worth recommending?

Stephen – When it comes to the movies, I have to say Prometheus was my favorite summer movie, yet another brilliant sci-fi epic from Ridley Scott. It has depth and an intellectual aspect, to alongside great visuals and action. It is a real rarity in this age of superhero popcorn flicks which to me are far better suited for cartoons than live action! LOL

I was pleasantly surprised by the remake of Total Recall. I really don’t like the idea of remakes, but I can’t deny that this one caught me by surprise, especially as it contains themes that resonate with some of the themes in my own writing! It had a real passion towards the idea of freedom and individual liberty. When I learned that Kurt Wimmer penned the screenplay for the Total Recall remake, it all came together, as he was the screenwriter for Equilibrium, another brilliant pro-liberty and anti-authoritarian film starring Sean Bean, Christian Bale, and others that is one of the true dystopian gems in the movie world.

As far as books go, I read a really great YA fantasy novel for blurb consideration, which I happily gave, entitled Deception Peak, by a talented writer and artist named Dianne Gardner. I am about to finally dive into The Hunger Games trilogy, as I’ve wanted to read that series since enjoying the first movie. It also carries themes that resonate with me and I want to find out if the books live up to the hype! LOL

Amber - What's your favorite paranormal movie of all time?

Stephen – Strictly paranormal speaking, I would have to say The Exorcist. It is a movie that has stood the test of time and still unsettles viewers. I don’t know if Rise of the Lycans, the third Underworld movie qualifies as strictly paranormal, but in terms of an action-driven paranormal movie I loved it! Of course, anything that shows werewolves triumph in the cause of freedom stirs my blood! LOL

Amber - If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would you be? and why?

Stephen – Jesus, as the questions I am most concerned about in life hinge upon the things I would ask him about, things that have always unsettled me and bothered me about the way the world is set up. I’m a big picture sort of person and tend to worry about those things the most.

Amber - Thank you for being a guest again! See you soon! ;)

Stephen - Thank you for having me as a guest since the very beginning when The Exodus Gate was first published. Your site will always have a special place in my world! :)

Author Guest Blog & Contest with Stephen Zimmer

Author and Film Maker Stephen Zimmer is a regular guest here on Amberkatze's Book Blog. Stephen's last visit was only back in February and his first visit here was exactly a year ago.

Stephen's new book Storm Guardians is now available and if you enjoy his guest blog about Epic Urban Fantasy then you may want to enter the contest. The contest prize package this time around is just as impressive and generous and the previous giveaways Stephen has hosted here on the site.

------------------------------

Epic Urban Fantasy.

It is the closest categorization that can be applied to the Rising Dawn Saga, which has always been a little hard for me to fit under a nice, easy label. In reflecting upon this aspect, as the second installment in the series rolls out, The Storm Guardians, I can see both a distinct advantage and a disadvantage. The disadvantage is simply that I cannot easily compare this series to something else that is out on the market when talking to new readers. Ironically, this is also the advantage, as the series does have some different qualities which will hopefully appeal to readers looking for fresh, original kinds of literary adventures within fantastical realms.

The mention of Epic Fantasy most often tends to bring to mind the notion of a medieval-related setting, like that found within my Fires In Eden series (book one was released last fall, Crown of Vengeance). The topic of Urban Fantasy brings to mind a wide range of popular writers today, mostly with tales set in contemporary
times, involving elements of the paranormal and the supernatural.

The Rising Dawn Saga is set in a parallel world that is very similar to our own. If parallel worlds were like an onion, the world in the saga would be just a couple of peels away, with many things in its history and places reflecting Earth fairly closely. This has been done for a purpose, as multiple states of existence are an important part of the overall story. As such, the saga is certainly contemporary in nature, and it is inundated with the supernatural and paranormal. In these areas, it most certainly relates to the content found in Urban Fantasy.

Yet there is a key difference between this story and the majority of other Urban Fantasy stories. This lies in the epic nature and scale of this saga. Set against the backdrop of a cosmic war, the saga features conflict on a massive scale, and also portrays realms and environments that are spectacular in scope, especially those in the non-physical realms depicted in the books. A variety of creatures and an ensemble cast of characters emerge throughout the several threads by which this story is told. In these areas, the saga has a breadth and depth that rivals the larger medieval fantasy series, entailing world-building aspects (such as the realms in the Abyss, Purgatarion, and those beyond the White City), epic battles (such as the one that takes place in the Storm Guardians), and an overall storyline that encompasses the fate of an entire world (and perhaps worlds, but I shall not let loose any spoilers!).

Ordinary characters, both of a human variety and non-human variety, are faced with profound, transformative events, and the way in which they respond to adversity illustrates aspects of the heroic and the courageous. From dutiful entities like the six-winged, multi-eyed Watcher Talthannor, to the diminutive, fairy-like, Peri named Asa’an, this path is taken with knowledge and experience that is not possessed by the human characters in the saga. The latter characters face the greater burden of the unknown and the uncertain, such as high school student Seth Engel, Arianna Darwin, the niece of radio show celebrity Benedict Darwin, and a hard-working electrician, Ian Rafferty, who simply wants to raise a family in a quiet little town. Even the more villainous amongst the human characters, such as the sorceress and leader of Babylon Technologies, Dagian Underwood, are at a disadvantage in comparison to the darker supernatural entities such as Sammael, Lilith, and Aaliyah Satrinah.

For me, the contrasts and balances between the ordinary and the fantastical make for a very exciting environment in which to develop this modern-age story. The structure of using several threads allows me to give perspective to the story from the eyes of both the virtuous and the nefarious, and a few in between. I believe that every reader can find a character, or more than one character, to really connect to (or be fascinated by). Though the context of the saga is large, I have worked hard to make sure that the personal touches remain, and that the characters live and breathe with a reality that the reader can relate to.

The Exodus Gate was a book that really laid the foundations in place and set things in motion for the Rising Dawn Saga, and The Storm Guardians charges forward with some big action, and heightening tension. I am really looking forward to hearing what the readers have to say about the new book, as it was quite a sojourn into the realms of imagination for me.

With an estimated seven books in the series, there is a whole lot more to come in this saga, and I invite readers of Epic Fantasy and Urban Fantasy alike to give Epic Urban Fantasy a try! You just might enjoy it!

Author Interview & Contest with Stephen Zimmer

This week I have two author guests. Todays guest is no stranger to Amberkatze's Book Blog and was already a guest here back in June. I was introduced to Stephen by author Shirley Damsgaard and we have been in touch ever since.

So please give a Stephen a warm welcome! I hope you will all enjoy the interview and enter the the contest. Stephen has put together an amazing prize package so please don't fight! ;)

----------------------

Amber - Stephen! It is so nice of you to be a guest again on Amberkatze's
Book Blog
! Maybe you can start things off by telling my readers about your
next book in The Rising Dawn Saga?

Stephen -– Hi Amber! It is great to be back on Amberkatze’s Book Blog, which I consider to be one of my virtual homes now!

2009 was definitely a very busy year, with the launching of both of my fantasy series. The Exodus Gate hit the streets in March of last year, launching The Rising Dawn Saga, and Crown of Vengeance came out in November, kicking off the Fires in Eden Series. Mixed with those releases were a bunch of live events and appearances at conventions and bookstores, which made for an incredibly busy year. And we haven’t paused! 2010 is rolling full steam ahead.

My publisher and I are dedicated to getting a new book out in each series roughly every year. Fans of either series will not be kept waiting long, and fans of both series get a new book every 6-7 months! The next book in the Rising Dawn Saga is slated for around May of 2010. We have a big launch planned at Hypericon, a great fantasy and sci-fi convention in Nashville, Tennessee, June 4-6 (and the guest of honor this year is Ramsey Campbell, which is really exciting!), followed by a Davis-Kidd bookstore appearance in Memphis that following Monday, June 7th. It will definitely be a big weekend.

Those that have read The Exodus Gate know that it is a foundational book for a large, epic fantasy series set in the modern day (in a parallel world very similar to our own … parallel worlds and existences have a part to play in this series!)

The 2nd book, which is as of yet untitled, hits the ground racing! Lots of exciting stuff regarding the An-Ki, the Nephilim, the Convergence, and even an enormous battle in the afterworld (involving everything from the small, fairy-like Peris to titanic High Avatars). The depth and breadth of the Rising Saga expand a lot more with this one. As I have promised, the story builds on the foundation of the first book, expanding the scope while keeping the story threads very tight. I am very confident that readers of the series will be very excited about the future titles in the series when they see how I build from the first book into the second. I predict a similar dynamic for those who enjoy the more medieval type fantasy of my Fires in Eden series, the second book of which will be out towards the end of 2010.

Amber - How many more books will there be in the series? How long would you like to see The Rising Dawn Saga run?

Stephen –- Amanda DeBord, my wondrous editor, and I have discussed this a few times. I do not want a series that stretches on forever, but it does entail too much material for a quadrology. My guess, based on how Amanda cuts the material, is that it will be 6-7 books in all. This is about the same length for the medieval fantasy series I have, Fires in Eden.

Amber - A question I have been asking writers is how they pick the names for their characters. So tell me, how do you pick yours and do any of them have a story behind them?

Stephen - I often have meanings woven into character names, based in the name itself, or perhaps making an allusion to a historical reference.

Take for instance Janus Roland, one of the main characters in Crown of Vengeance, from my new Fires in Eden series. Janus, of course, is the name of a Roman god symbolized by the depiction of two faces looking in opposite directions, who is the god of beginnings and endings, gates and doorways.

The last name of Roland derives from the epic tragedy Song of Roland, which tells the tale one of Charlemagne’s warriors who fights heroically against impossible odds, when ambushed on his way back from a war campaign.

Without giving too much away, Janus Roland’s very name gives hints as to the role that he will play in this series, and hints about the series itself.

Another example is Mershad Shahab, a young muslim fellow in Crown of Vengeance, who is a first generation American in his family. The name Shahab comes from the Farsi word for “shooting star”, and the element of something meteoric contains symbolism related to the character arc for Mershad in this series.

If readers like depth, there are layers everywhere in my books for them to explore.

Amber - Are you working on any other projects or is the The Rising Dawn Saga keeping you busy enough? ;)

Stephen –- I may have a short story or two involved in some anthologies in the coming year, but the main focus writing-wise is definitely on The Rising Dawn Saga and Crown of Vengeance.

I have been developing and writing both series since the mid 1990’s, so I have a lot of material and depth built already. This is what enables us to have the kind of schedule that we do with my publisher. The drafts are there for the first few volumes. They simply need to go to Amanda’s desk for her insightful editing, and then some touching up and a little rewriting by me!

On the film side of things, I will be directing one short film based upon a segment of H. David Blalock’s outstanding fantasy novel Ascendant. It will have a great production value and will shoot in the early summer of 2010. I am working with some real special effects wizards from Cineline Productions, as well as a great up-and-coming cinematographer, Aaron Champion.

I am also in development on an original feature, based on a screenplay I wrote, that is set in the Viking age.

Amber - What is the easiest and hardest part about being an author?

Stephen –- The easiest part is immersing into the fantasy worlds as you write them. That is an absolute blast for me, as I really do see the events unfolding in my head and write them down as if I am an observer! Letting my imagination run rampant is what I enjoy most.

The hardest part is simply maintaining the energy and constant organization necessary for supporting the book releases, in terms of travel, press, and the like. I am dedicated to keeping up a year-round schedule and I am very focused on meeting readers in person, making myself available to events and conventions, and other such activities, but it can be a very exhausting process, especially when you have to conserve resources as tightly as I do as a small press author.

Needless to say, if you look at my appearance schedule, it is as active and busy as an author on a big publishing house’s roster. I think this sends a very strong message to my readers and my publisher that I am 125% committed to them, to interacting with them, and to do everything that I possibly can to support and promote my work. I’m in this for the long haul and giving it everything I'’ve got.

Amber - How much say do you have as an author when your book is being published? Do you choose the cover? Get a say in the format?

Stephen –- This is the ONE big advantage of being on a small press. I do get a lot of input on the cover design, in ways that authors with large publishers do not. I work very well with Matthew Perry, the fantasy artist that did the 15 full page illustrations and cover art in The Exodus Gate, and the 10 full page illustrations and cover art in Crown of Vengeance (visit Matt’s work and commission him!)

I try to respect the artist’s interpretation as much as possible, making suggestions only when there is a significant conflict with what is in the text of the book. The illustrations and cover art, I believe, turned out wonderfully and I can’t wait to work with Matt again and again.

As far as formats go, my publisher is dedicated to putting out a trade paperback, a hardcover, and a Kindle/eBook version of my work, which is more than satisfactory to me!

Amber - What are you reading, watching and listening to lately? Any recommendations?

Stephen -– While Avatar is certainly a visual spectacle, there are 2 movies that are rich in substance that I have seen recently. One is Extraordinary Measures, which really got the science/funding/research culture spot-on. This one hit me very personally as my own father was a maverick cancer researcher who endured a lot of struggle, because he was way ahead of the curve in his area of research, and his vision was met with skepticism and worse. I really could relate to the Dr. Stonehill character, and they did a great job of portraying a dedicated researcher. The movie is very substantive and important for many reasons, as well as being a powerful drama. Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones is also a must see, as far as movies go.

Bookwise, I have been delving back into Robert E. Howard quite a bit lately, with his famous Conan the Barbarian short stories, which has been incredibly fun. By the time that this interview is posted, I will have my copy of Shirley Damsgaard’s The Seventh Witch, her newest book, which is next up on my reading list (it’s going right to the top of my to-be-read pile!).

I am always reading history, especially medieval history or books on the mythic or mystical.

I have been reading a lot of fantastic small press releases in the recent past, having made many great discoveries at the conventions and events that I have been attending, such as Jackie Gamber’s Redheart, Elizabeth Donald’s The Cold Ones, H. David Blalock’s Ascendant (which I just committed to doing a short film for, as a director, concerning a major segment of the book). D.A. Adams, Maurice Broaddus, Apex Publication’s new Harland County Horrors anthology (edited by Mari Adkins), Steven Shrewsbury, Jon Klement, Lettie Prell, Crymsyn Hart, Sara Harvey, TammyJo Eckhart… and several other very gifted authors out there that are absolute gems waiting for a broad readership to discover. Truly, check these writers out, folks! Small Press really is booming right now, with the major publishers shrinking their catalogs and rosters, and there’s a rich amount of material for readers to discover! Small Press is where bigger chances and risks are being taken in the horror/fantasy/sci-fi genres.

Amber - There are so many online sites eg, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace etc. to get in touch with fans. Which sites are you signed up with? Is it hard to keep up with them all? Do you think they are good?

Stephen - Yes, they are very good, but they are a challenge to keep up with, especially on the really busy days. Yet they are a necessary thing.

All of these social networking mediums are great channels for readers and authors to interact on, and I try to keep up with my FaceBook Page and MySpace page as much as possible. I do not have Twitter yet, as I have enough trouble keeping up with the other two! My Facebook page and my MySpace page is similar, at If you are on one of these networks, be sure to add me!

Amber - If you could be any famous person, alive or dead, who would you be? and why?

Stephen -– Probably the apostle John, so I could get a first-hand experience of some rather momentous events of 2,000 years ago in the Middle East, and find out just how the Book of Revelations came about! I am always fascinated with apocalyptic stories, I suppose!

Amber - Thank you again for being a guest on Amberkatze's Book Blog! I hope you will stop by again soon!

Stephen - Thank you, Amber, and I look forward to catching up with you again in the early summer! Or anytime you want me around, for that matter! The road that I am on is not easy, and Amberkatze’s Book Blog will always have a very special place and top priority with me!

Synopsis of Crown of Vengeance, Book One of the Fires In Eden series:

Begin an Epic Journey...

On a night that begins no different from any other, strange mists engulf Janus Roland, Erika Laesig, Mershad Shahab, and several others going about their lives in a quiet midwestern town. When the mist dissipates, they all find themselves looking up into the bright skies of a new, incredible world.

Without explanation of why it has happened, or any notion of where they are, they embark upon a grand adventure within the fantastical world of Ave. Some find themselves in the lands of the Saxan Kingdom, while others have emerged within the lands of the Onan, one of the tribes in the Five Realms confederation.

Storms of war loom over both Saxany and the Five Realms, as invasion forces mass under the inspiration of The Unifier, a mysterious, captivating figure whose influence has swept across the surface of Ave ever since His rise to power in the Gallean duchy of Avanor. It is a war that will be fought in the skies, upon the seas, on land, and even in places non-physical in nature.

A majestic, epic fantasy that begins many adventures and journeys across a diverse and enthralling world, filled with races and creatures both familiar and new, Crown of Vengeance lights the flame of the Fires in Eden series, bringing to life a bold, far-ranging, and grand new venture within the realms of fantasy literature.
