52) The Curse of Tenth Grave by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

As a Part-time PI and fulltime grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister’s hair before she wakes up? But, “How do I trap not one malevolent god, but three?” was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension.

There’s just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago. Can the Razer, a god of absolute death and destruction, change his omniscient spots, or will his allegiances lie with his brothers?

Those are just a few of the questions Charley must answer, and quick. Add to that a homeless girl running for her life, an innocent man who’s been charged with murder, and a pendant made from god glass that has the entire supernatural world in an uproar, and Charley has her hands full. If she can manage to take care of the whole world-destroying-gods thing, we’re saved. If not, well…

My Thoughts :

Another superb installment in the Charley Davidson series awaits fans in The Curse of Tenth Grave.  It has everything that, anyone following the series, would expect from Darynda's amazing series about Grim Reaper Charley Davidson.  The continuing story is filled with the usually wit and fun while the regular characters show up when they are needed and sometimes when they are not.  The plot in this tenth installment is on par with all the previous books and there isn't a bad word you can actually say about this or any of the installments in this fantastically original series.

If you haven't already had the pleasure of reading this series then get to it as fast as you can.  Charley is funny, crazy and sometimes annoying but she solves cases and looks after the good people.  She even gets involved with cases that don't even pay.  In this case she checks out a children's home where the inhabitants have been mysteriously dying due to a curse.  All the while she tries to solve the mystery surrounding a disappearance that could see an innocent main going to jail.

But it isn't just murder and mystery in Charley's world that makes this series so readable.  There is the supernatural aspect that weaves its way into the story.  Ghosts, gods and lots more are all entwined in the story which gives away a few secrets in each installment.  Despite many questions getting answered there are always more discoveries and twists that keep things going.  Which makes this series even more exciting, addictive and original.

I absolutely love this series and even though I managed to get a review copy of the book I still waited until the Audio version came out.  Why?  Because this is just one of those series that is made even more special and amazing by the wonderful narrator.  If you are looking for an audio, love audios or just want to try one, then I highly recommend this series.  The whole sass and wit that is Charley is captured by the narrator so well.  It makes the story even more enjoyable.

So in conclusion, make sure you check out this series.  Make sure you start from the beginning.  Oh and definitely give the audio version a chance.  Can't wait for more!  Keep them coming!

8) The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around.

But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her—even from her new and trusted friends—the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

My Thoughts :

I actually got a copy of this book to read and review months before it released.  However I couldn't bring myself to read it because I absolutely love listening to this series.  It may actually be the best series ever to listen to on audible because the narrator is just amazing.  I waited and waited until the release date and despite having a free copy already I bought the audio version.  That is how cool this series is to listen to.

Anyway, I will admit to having a moment of 'what the...?' when I started listening to this one.   I had completely forgotten how the eight installment ended and it threw me for a couple of minutes.  Then everything came flooding back and I, unlike Charley, remembered and I settled in to one of the best installments of the series.

The sarcasm, the wit and the laughs were all there.  Charley may not  remember who she is but she is still the same old Charley character wise.  It was the usual fun and games with all the cheek, mouthiness and profanity that the series always offers.  There was madness, mayhem and a little magic.  There was enough paranormal goings on keep the fans happy and the heat went up more than once...if you know what I mean! Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

I loved the plot for this one.  It kept it fresh, it made it all new and was more of a reboot or upgrade.  This series has always managed to keep things unique and new but the author took things to a whole new level in this ninth part and she did a wonderful job of making sure not to bore us fans who already knew all the stuff that Charley couldn't remember.

Everything, as always weaves together to make a thrilling story that is hard to put down.  As all the pieces fall into place you can't help but get excited but at the same time you know things are coming to an end and that the wait for another new piece of the bigger puzzle begins again.

As always, the narrator was exceptional and as usual there were some great quotes at the beginning of each chapter.  This is a series that stands out and always leaves me wanting more.  I can't wait to see what happens next and look forward to seeing how the story will keep twisting and turning.  Lovely cliffhanger Darynda!

100) Brighter Than the Sun by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

All his life, Reyes Alexander Farrow has suffered the torments of the damned. Only one thing has given him hope: the woman who radiates a light that no mortals can see; a light that only the departed can see...

My Thoughts :

Before I start my review I just want to say...100 books read this year!!!!  I have completed my reading goal for 2015 and it feels good ;)

So...a novella from one of my favourite series ever!  Not to be missed especially as it is told from Reyes point of view.  Any fan of the series would be crazy not to pick up a copy of this bad boy and while it was worth the money it wasn't all I expected.

While the majority of the information was new and there were many insights to Reyes life before he and Charley got together, there were some rehashes of events.  I guess it was to be expected and it did need to be in there but novellas are short stories and I want them to packed with all new shiny things.  Thats just me though.

I guess the disappointment for me was the timing of the book.  It was more or less all about Reyes childhood until the Charley Davidson series started.  As I said, lots of new eye-opening details, stories and stuff but I was really hoping to get to see the 'now' through Reyes eyes.  With everything that happened in the last book, well I wanted to see how that all felt for him.

Can we expect more Reyes novels in the future?  Maybe more up to date on the time line?  I certainly hope so.  This was one of the best novellas I have read and that comes from someone who usually hates them all.  Fans will love this and new readers will need to read the first few books in the series first to actually understand and respect this short story.

Well worth the time and money.  As are all the Charley Davidson books.  Looking forward to the next full length installment!

58) Eight Grave After Dark by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

My Thoughts :

There are so many things I want to say about this new Charley Davidson installment but every detail would be a complete and utter spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the book already.  What I can say is OMG!  This book is a total game changer.  There are twists and turns that hold all other twists and turns to shame.  There are things that happen in the last few chapters of this book that will test your faith in the whole series and also make you wonder if you really understood what just happened.  Eight Grave After Dark is, as I already mentioned, a complete game changer.

This series has kept me laughing for years now and eight books in there is no turning back.  I am not sure if I am extremely happy with how the book ended things but I have to say that it has left me even more eager to read the next installment.  There has always been some little cliffhanger but this book has a couple of chapters filled with cliffhangers.  If you have been following the series then watch out for spoilers because one false glance at a review could ruin it all.

Once again there was everything you have come to expect from the author and characters.  The quirky quotes at the beginning of each chapter.  Charley's witty and sarcastic comments and thoughts.  The support of her family and friends.  Just everything and then so much more.  This one will not only make you laugh but it will also make you want to cry.  Charley goes through so much that all the other events before this book look harmless.  I wonder what will happen to her next.

Read this series in order, read it as soon as possible and if you haven't already read it I highly suggest listening to the audio versions.  The narrator is amazing and even though I could get the Kindle copy on the day of the release and binge read it I prefer to get the audio and enjoy the wonderful performance Lorelei King puts into this series.  She is the best narrator and this is best audio series I listen to.

Can't wait for Nine, Ten and yes...Eleven!!!  The author interview at the end of the audible book includes some great news for fans.

117) Seventh Grace and No Body by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there’s that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds.
For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she’s ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancé who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life.

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.

We’re doomed.

My Thoughts :

I am having a good reading week!  So many great books have been released and I am reading them straight away and leaving my to be read pile to grow out of control!  But some books just need to read or listen to as soon as possible.

The Charley Davidson series a pre-order and must read series.  It is also a must listen to series.  The narrator is amazing and I couldn't read these books without the audio version.  Yes it takes me a week to listen to the whole story and reading the book would only take a day but the quality and performance is just too good and unforgettable.   It makes the story even more fun and enjoyable.

The seventh book in the series is just as wit and action filled as the previous six.  There are shenanigans with handcuffs, some hellhounds and also a few weird departed thrown in.  There are some death related surprises and twists that will leave a huge scar while there are some interesting relationship developments.  There is the BEP (you will know what I mean when you have read the book) and the 12 to worry about as well as a strange bout of suicides and empty graves.  There is never a dull moment and there is always a good helping of sarcasm and minor confusion to make things more exciting.   It is all fun and games when Charley is involved.

So I don't want to give anything away because this is a series best served without spoilers but you really don't want to miss this installment.  If you haven't tried this series yet then I can only highly recommend it and beg you to listen to the audio version if you like listening to books.  It really is worth the time and definitely worth the effort.  But be warned!  This is really hilarious at times and you may want to be careful listening to this in public.  Laughing out loud and making funny giggling noises is very possible.

Now the wait starts again.  I think I saw somewhere that book eight arrives in May.  So not a really long wait but still too long!  Wishes for book eight :  Please finally give us more info on Mr Wong!  Make a little time jump so BEP is bigger.  Oh and we need more Amber.  She has so many more awkward questions she could ask Auntie Charley!

56) Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

Few things in life can come between a grim reaper and her coffee, but the sexy, sultry son of Satan is one of them. Now that Reyes Farrow has asked for her hand, Charley Davidson feels it's time to learn more about his past, but Reyes is reluctant to open up. When the official FBI file of his childhood abduction lands in her lap, Charley decides to go behind her mysterious beau’s back and conduct her own investigation. Because what could go wrong?

Unfortunately, another case has fallen into her lap—one with dangerous implications. Some very insistent men want Charley to hunt down a witness who is scheduled to testify against their boss, a major player in the local crime syndicate. If Charley doesn't come up with an address in 48 hours, the people closest to her will start to disappear.

Add to that a desperate man in search of the soul he lost in a card game, a dogged mother determined to find the ghost of her son, and a beautiful, young Deaf boy haunted by his new ability to see the departed as clearly as he sees the living, and Charley has her hands full. The fact that Reyes has caught on to her latest venture only adds fuel to the inferno that he is. Good thing for Charley she's used to multi-tasking and always up for a challenge…especially when that challenge comes in the form of Reyes Farrow.

My Thoughts :

The Charley Davidson series may just be the most evil of Urban Paranormals out there.  Witty, original and full of Grim Reaper it is one of the best reads there is but you have to wait so long for the next installment!!!  this sixth part in the weird and wacky life of P.I Charley Davidson is as brilliant and funny as the previous five books.  If only the books came out quicker because the ending for this one was a nasty one!

What can you expect to find in this new addition to the series?  More madness and mayhem as Charley gets herself into enough trouble to nearly get herself killed again.  Ghosts popping up all over the place in various states of undress.  Death and destruction.  Crazy schemes to bring people together, get people apart and save people from dying.  Oh and the usual steamy, yummy and sexy moments of Reyes.  So basically everything that makes each book stand out and be amazing.

The story this time around gives away a little info about Mr Wong, finds out more about the naked guy in her car and Charley also manages to get involved in a few more cases.  Juggling them all sounds like hard work but she manages it all in her crazy reaper style. There are some very interesting twists and turns in the continuing story regarding who and what Reyes is and what Charley has to do with it all as well as her skills as a Grim Reaper.  The author definitely wants to give us more but I can see why she is holding out on us as well!

For anyone who hasn't read this series yet I seriously suggest listening to the audio version.  The narrator, Lorelei King, does a spectacular job of bringing the books to life and I love the way she portrays the characters.  The series is unique and special in its own right but the audio version is definitely worth the time.  I found myself listening to it at any free moment and had a hard time not laughing out loud on the street while listening to another great read!

All in all, read this book, read this series, it is the best thing out there!!!  The quotes from T-shirts, bumper stickers etc at the beginning of each chapter are just a wonderful touch to an amazing story. I can't wait to see what happens next and if I could pre-order the next book already I would.  I just hope that the story jumps a few months between this and the next book.  I think it will make things a lot more interesting.

Edit : I just saw that the seventh book is coming out in October!!! Only a few months wait instead of a year!! Yay! Thank you!

Monthly Giveway Results & Winner Announcement!

August is already coming to an end but the July Monthly Giveaway has just ended!  So a new monthly Giveaway will be coming along soon!  However right now we need to see who won the last one!

I had some good choices this month and I am pretty sure there was something for everyone!

So which book got the most votes?  Who has won a copy of the winning book?  Let's find out!

How does the Monthly Giveaway work?

I pick five of my favourite reads from the last month (sorry no ARCs are included unless they have already been released!) then you guys go to the poll and vote for the book you want to win or the one you think deserves to win! Remember! You may not actually win the book you voted for.

Here are the results :

In last place is Deadly Forecast by Victoria Laurie with only 5.5% of the vote.  This is a good read if you have been following the series.  However against the other books on offer I was sure it wouldn't get many votes, and it didn't.

Fourth place with 11% of the votes goes to Tarnished and Torn (A Witchcraft Mystery #5) by Juliet Blackwell.  I am not sure but I think a cozy mystery, paranormal or otherwise, has never won the Monthly Giveaway.

I am surprised that White Trash Zombie Apocalypse by Diana Rowland only made it to third place!  I love this series and it is amazingly funny and thrilling.  However you guys only gave it 13% of the vote because the other books on offer looked better!

It was close but Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones came in at second place.  I was not expecting that at all!  But if you are all fans of the series I guess you have bought and read this one already.

So first place this month goes to Midnight Frost by Jennifer Estep!  Well done!  Jennifer is one of my all time favourite authors and I love it when her books win the Monthly Giveaway!

103) Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones

The Blurb :

Charley Davidson may not look like your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper, but she has vowed to reap grimness wherever she goes despite this unfortunate fact. Sadly, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. As he is the main suspect in her arson case, she is determined to stay away from him until she can find out the truth. According to her therapist, however, she lacks conviction.

When dead women start appearing in her apartment - lost, confused and terrified beyond reason - Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes's help, especially when it becomes apparent that her own sister Gemma is the serial killer's next target. With his ability to observe incorporeally, surely he can find out who's responsible. And even if he can't, he is the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return: Charley. All of her - body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay…

My Thoughts :

Amazing, fantastic and just spectacular!  I don't think it is really worth writing a review for a book this good because you should all just got out and read it.  Actually you should read the whole series!  I just can't get enough of this one and the audible version is absolutely perfect!  I would love to read the books someday but I can't help myself listening to this series.  The narrator just brings the characters and story to life in such a special way.  It is hard to explain how good it is.

If you haven't already had the ultimate pleasure of reading/listening to this series yet then you really need to play catch up.  Already a fan?  Then wait no longer and just go get a copy of this book today.  I would rather use my money to buy a Charley Davidson book than buy food or pay some bills.  Everything else can wait but this book/series is not just entertainment but nourishment for the soul.  It makes you laugh, cry and just feel good.  There are moments you think are scary and frightening but Charley makes them fun and interesting.

Being the Grim Reaper isn't easy and it isn't always fun but Charley Davidson makes a living out of it and also manages to help a lot of souls pass over to the otherside.  Meanwhile in this newest installment she also manages to solve a few cases and see her love life evolve in a way I definitely wasn't expecting.  I can hardly contain myself and hope book six comes sooner rather than later.  I need to know what happens next.

Darynda Jones is one of those writers who has a unique writing talent.  She manages to pull you in, keep you occupied and weave a wonderful plot with the most awesome characters while also entertaining you with some realistic situations filled with joking scarcasm.  I absolutely love the style and the paranormal element just makes this the perfect read.  I can only highly recommend this series and tell everyone who will listen about how great this series is.  It is a series I will giving to friends and family as presents and one I will be listening to again and again.

10 out of 10, A+ and 5 stars!  This is the best of the best and you should be ordering a copy already!  Or get to the nearest bookstore and start reading it there! Go!  Do it now!  You won't regret it!

Here are the results for this months giveaway!

Wuthering Frights by H.P. Mallory came in last with only 8.11% of the vote.   I hope this bad result is due to one of two factors.  1) You have all read this series already or/and 2) The other books on offer were just too good to pass up on.

Dead Silence by Kimberly Derting came in at fourth place.  13.5% of the vote wanted this book to win but the top three books just didn't give this one a chance.

Sharp by Alex Hughes holds the third place with 18.92% of the votes.  I really wanted this one to win but it seems you guys wanted the other books more.  I just hope that you will all go and check out this series anyway.  It rocks!

Kitty Rocks the House by Carrie Vaughn comes in at second place and I wasn't expecting that.  It seems there are still a lot of Kitty fans out there who don't run out and buy the new releases.  27.03% of the vote shows you guys really wanted Kitty to win!

Death, Doom & Detention by Darynda Jones is the winner this month with 32.34% of the votes.  I can't say I am surprised by this result because Darynda always seems to win my Monthly Giveaway when she is on the poll.
