My Review :

I have a well know love/hate relationship with anthologies.  I love to read them and discover new authors but I hate to read them because usually 75% of the book is filled with stories I don't like.  So it was very refreshing to read Enthralled and actually enjoy 75% of the book!  With some of my favourite authors inside and also some of my favourite series included, I really found lots to like about this selection of stories.  Plus I found a few new authors/series that I will be checking out because of this book.  Now I won't go through every story and disect it.  It would take forever.  However I will point out some of my favourites and some I didn't enjoy as much.

My favourites from authors/series I already know were Niederwald by Rachel Vincent (Soul Screamers Story), Giovanni’s Farewell by Claudia Gray and Skin Contact by Kimberley Derting (Body Finder Series).  These stories were both very good reads and both told from the perspective of another character from the series.  In the Soul Screamers story it was told by Sabine and included Emma.  The story by Claudia Gray seemed somehow familiar and I wonder if it is one I have read before or if it belongs to a series I have read by this author.  It was a nice tale and I liked the idea.  I wonder if there is more about these psychic twins?  While the Kimberly Derting story was from Rafe's point of view.  Nice additions to the series and well worth reading if you are a fan.

Then I have a couple of favourites from authors I haven't come across before.  These included the stories by Carrie Ryan, Jackson Pierce, Jessica Verday and Mary E. Pearson.  In the case of the Carrie Ryan story I was left intrigued because you never really find out what the characters are hiding/running from.  It is all about survival and I will be looking to see what this series is about.  Jackson Pierce's story about Jinn was unusual and quite amusing.  I have already put one of his books on my wishlist so I can find out more about the relationship mentioned in this story.  The short story by Jessica Verday started with an opening line about cannibal girl scouts which had me hooked straight away.  It was a weird and wacky story but different and interesting.  And lastly Mary E. Pearson wrote about gargoyles.  Now the plot wasn't amazing but the concept was nice.  Also I am a sucker for a gargoyle story.

As always there were a few stories that were seriously lacking in everything and were definitely not worth reading but may just be enjoyed by others.  I have no idea what IV League by Margaret Stohl was supposed to be about and it was one of those stories that ruined the anthology and just didn't fit in.  Merely Mortal by Melissa Marr wasn't my cupy of tea.  I believe I have read at least the first book in the Wicked Lovely series but fae are just not my favourite paranormal/fantasy element and this one therefore goes towards the bad stories in this selection.

Three stories were ones I was really looking forward to but disappointed me slightly.  Automatic by Rachel Caine was a nice read but it wasn't a good addition to the Morganville Series.   Facing Facts by Kelley Armstrong is set in the Darkest Powers trilogy and gives away some of the plot of the main story if you haven't already read it.  Also it is was a pretty poor story and not very exciting.  Lastly Bridge by Jeri Smith-Ready was the only work by this author that I can honestly say I didn't like one bit.  Set in the Shade series it was set in verse and not very impressive at all.

So all in all a very nice selection with, as always, a few duds.  I am really happy I read this anthology and I don't say that very often about short story collections!  So Enthralled is definitely one of the best ones I have read.  If you are looking for a book to introduce a friend to this genre then you shouldn't look much further.  Aimed at Younger Readers this doesn't have a childish feeling to it and is one for adults or just one to share with that teenager in your life.

Here are the results for this months giveaway!


Wuthering Frights by H.P. Mallory came in last with only 8.11% of the vote.   I hope this bad result is due to one of two factors.  1) You have all read this series already or/and 2) The other books on offer were just too good to pass up on.


Dead Silence by Kimberly Derting came in at fourth place.  13.5% of the vote wanted this book to win but the top three books just didn't give this one a chance.


Sharp by Alex Hughes holds the third place with 18.92% of the votes.  I really wanted this one to win but it seems you guys wanted the other books more.  I just hope that you will all go and check out this series anyway.  It rocks!

Kitty Rocks the House by Carrie Vaughn comes in at second place and I wasn't expecting that.  It seems there are still a lot of Kitty fans out there who don't run out and buy the new releases.  27.03% of the vote shows you guys really wanted Kitty to win!


Death, Doom & Detention by Darynda Jones is the winner this month with 32.34% of the votes.  I can't say I am surprised by this result because Darynda always seems to win my Monthly Giveaway when she is on the poll.

53) Dead Silence by Kimberly Derting

The Blurb :

When someone close to Violet becomes a suspect in a horrific murder, she finds herself pulled into a deadly hunt for a madman with an army of devoted followers. Violet has survived dangerous situations before, but she quickly discovers that protecting those closest to her is far more difficult than protecting herself.

My Thoughts :

Lately I haven't been in the reading mood. I have no idea why but lack of time and energy have been big factors in my reluctance to sit down and read. If I can't get in a good couple of hours then I don't want to get into the story only to have to put it down again within twenty minutes. However audio books are not a huge problem but they take longer to get finished. That brought me to Dead Silence. A series I have been following since it began and the newest installment came along just as I needed something new to listen to.

I will say up front that this new addition to the series was not my favourite so far. However there were a few bits of information and a couple of twists that made the series just that little bit more interesting and captivating. They are also what kept me listening while the plot slowly developed very undramatically. Yes there was some good content and it there was a certain amount of curiosity as to where the story would go and what would happen but in the end it was obvious what would happen.

As a concept this series gets some top marks from me. A girl who can find bodies and hear/smell their echoes and match them to the killers is really fascinating. I like how Violet has managed to find a way to use her 'gift' and it is nice to see her get used to the responsibility that goes with it. Despite that I am finding her friends and family a bit too much to handle. On one side you have a set of parents who don't seem to get involved very much and play blind to what their daughter is always up to and on the otherside you have a bunch of friends who are either in the dark or very much aware of what is going on. Then there is the amount of school Violet misses and doesn't seem to be punished for.

Despite my nit-picking (which could go on and on but I will spare you) I still like the idea and hope that as Violet grows up that things will stabilise. Actually I think this is the kind of series that would make a good TV show or film. Maybe just a little bit more grown up and less teenage "does he really care" woes involved.

A good series and a nice narrator made this audio well worth listening to. I look forward to the next in this series, if there is one, and hope that next time around all the characters do a bit of growing up. Maybe the author could even skip a year or two and move things along.

  

  

3) The Last Echo by Kimberly Derting

The Blurb :

Violet kept her morbid ability to sense dead bodies a secret from everyone except her family and her childhood-best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay Heaton. That is until forensic psychologist Sara Priest discovered Violet’s talent and invited her to use her gift to track down murderers. Now, as she works with an eclectic group of individuals—including mysterious and dangerously attractive Rafe—it’s Violet’s job to help those who have been murdered by bringing their killers to justice.

When Violet discovers the body of a college girl killed by “the girlfriend collector” she is determined to solve the case. But now the serial killer is on the lookout for a new “relationship” and Violet may have caught his eye...

My Thoughts :

I waited a long time for this third Body Finder book to be released on audio. I had listened to the first two books and wanted to keep listening to them. However after a long long wait it seemed obvious that this third part wasn't going to make it onto audio anytime soon. I gave up waiting and added the book to my Kindle wishlist.

Despite my long break between books two and three I didn't have much trouble getting back into the series. Something this unique and good is hard to forget. However while the first two books revolved around Violet just finding bodies and getting into trouble along the way, this time she has a whole group of people with 'gifts' like hers to hang about with. I was dubious about this new angle but in the end it seems like the author was too. The other people in the group were mentioned and sometimes had cameo like appearances but all in all they stayed in the background.

The group stayed behind but the main characters didn't. It was good to find out more about Rafe and Sara while I felt like I missed Jaye. Sure he was around but more in the capacity as a lap dog or doormat function. I wonder how long he will continue to be a part of the series at all. This also goes for Violet's parents who either too busy to care that much or are just too weirded out by their daughters special ability to step up and really get her out of harms way. This decision has however been taken out of their hands if the ending of this third installment has anything to do with it.

The plot this time around was as spectacular and spooky as the previous books. I wouldn't expect much else from a series about a girl who can find dead bodies. The author builds up a nice psychological murder mystery plot and you find yourself in a story not much different to an episode of Criminal Minds. Why this has to be Young Adult is beyond me and to be honest I wonder if any teenager could read this without being scared senseless. The subject matter is quite heavy even if the author tones it down and doesn't go into specifics about the crimes. It is just a matter of putting two and two together.

This is a great series and I am really enjoying it. I am not sure if I am going to like the whole conspiracy/secret bosses stuff which I saw coming a mile off. Book four is due out in the Spring and I will definitely be getting a copy. I like the style and the content of this one although I have to say I would highly recommend an adult read this first before giving it to a younger reader.

10) The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

The Blurb :

As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.

My Thoughts :

I am really enjoyed Kimberly Derting's Body Finder series and when I saw she had another book out I had to give it a go. Although it sounded totally different to her other series I decided that her work had been so good that I had to check this one out too. Some authors just make an impact on you and you just need to read more.

From this start this story caught my attention. It was miles away from the Body Finder books and was on another level completely. The post-apocalyptic aspect of The Pledge made itself know pretty quick and the small details the author kept throwing in to add depth to the world stuck with me and had me grabbing for more. I was pretty much hooked within a few chapters and couldn't wait to see where the author took this Maria V. Snyder/Suzanne Collins mix.

Where as the story started off being interesting, exciting and extremely cool it started losing its appeal towards the middle. Things started to get predictable and certain parts of the story began to annoy me. Then all of a sudden I started to wonder how the author would tie things up. as the audio book was nearly running out. It felt close to an end but I felt like there should be more. Then all of a sudden it was over and I was left feeling unsure about the whole thing.

There were certainly a lot of good things about this book and the unique idea of languages splitting the people and a young girl with the power to understand them all was only the tip of the iceberg. However this lacked the superb writing style that I have enjoyed in the Body Finder series. Also the story always seemed to stay on the same level. It never really reached a wow and hardly managed more than a Ahhh...

All in all this was a very impressive story but it left me slightly disappointed. I have now seen that this is set to be a series and I am curious to how that will proceed because for me this could have been a one off. Everything that could have happened did happen with a nice happy ending. Yes a tiny part was left open but it wasn't enough for me to be hoping for a sequel. Will I bother with the next part? Most likely. I am sure my curiosity will get the better of me but I won't be rushing out to get a copy.

Worth checking out if you like the author and this kind of story. I particularly liked the audio version and thought the narrator did a very good job.

I read some great books in 2011. After painstakingly narrowing down my favourites to just 10 books I asked you guys to vote for which book you thought deserved to win.

7th place - This one was in my top 5 favourite reads but it seems you guys are fans. Sympathy for the Devil By Justin Gustainis comes in second from last with only 2.54% of the votes!


6th Place - Even if it only got 6.78% of the vote I hope you will still try Forsaken By Jana Oliver . This is a really special series and I can't wait for more.


5th Place - Not a lot of Steampunk fans here? Heartless by Gail Carriger is full of paranormal wit and fun but it only got 8.47% of the vote.


Joint 4th Place - Silver-Tongued Devil By Jaye Wells & How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf By Molly Harper both got 10.17% of the votes. Two great reads but miles apart from each other. Definitely worth reading!


Joint 3rd Place - Working Stiff By Rachel Caine & My Life As a White Trash Zombie By Diana Rowland both got 13.56% of the vote. If I had to pick an overall best read for 2011 I do believe I would go with the White Trash Zombie. So I am glad it got to 3rd position.


2nd Place - A big name in the genre and a well deserved place in the top 3 with 15.25%! The Gathering By Kelley Armstrong was a brilliant read and I can't wait for the sequel to come out later this year.

1st Place - And the winner is...Touch of Power By Maria V. Snyder!!!! Wooohooo!!! I can't say I am surprised that this amazing read made it to the top three but I didn't expect it to win over all the others! Well done Maria! You are the Best of 2011!!!

Best of 2011 Giveaway!

2011 had a lot of good books in it. Unfortunately I didn't read as much as I wanted to and didn't meet my goal of 175 books. It was close though. Just had a few too many distractions and I hope 2012 will be a better year for reading.

Now the year is over (as far as reading is concerned) and instead of a December Monthly Giveaway it is time for the Best of 2011 Giveaway! Here is your chance to win one of the top three books I read in 2011 and you all get to help choose which books were the best!

I have spent quite a bit of time going through all my reads from last year and picked out 10 books that, for me, stood out and I would say were the best. Of course there are loads more I would have loved to add to this list but I have limited myself to ten and it wasn't easy!
