159) The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

The Blurb :

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

Sydney would love to go to college, but instead, she’s been sent into hiding at a posh boarding school in Palm Springs, California–tasked with protecting Moroi princess Jill Dragomir from assassins who want to throw the Moroi court into civil war. Formerly in disgrace, Sydney is now praised for her loyalty and obedience, and held up as the model of an exemplary Alchemist.

But the closer she grows to Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian, the more she finds herself questioning her age–old Alchemist beliefs, her idea of family, and the sense of what it means to truly belong. Her world becomes even more complicated when magical experiments show Sydney may hold the key to prevent becoming Strigoi—the fiercest vampires, the ones who don’t die. But it’s her fear of being just that—special, magical, powerful—that scares her more than anything. Equally daunting is her new romance with Brayden, a cute, brainy guy who seems to be her match in every way. Yet, as perfect as he seems, Sydney finds herself being drawn to someone else—someone forbidden to her.

When a shocking secret threatens to tear the vampire world apart, Sydney’s loyalties are suddenly tested more than ever before. She wonders how she's supposed to strike a balance between the principles and dogmas she's been taught, and what her instincts are now telling her.

Should she trust the Alchemists—or her heart?

My Thoughts :

The Golden Lily has been on my iPod for a while and I wasn't in a rush to get to it. Despite liking the Vampire Academy books, the debut in this spin-off just didn't shine as much as I expected to. So the sequel wasn't looking too appealing but I still wanted to give the series a chance to warm up. Maybe things improved and I would never know! After all I have been reading Richelle Mead's books since she first appeared on the scene.

This second book in the Bloodlines series carries on from where the first book left us, in Amberwood hiding Moroi. Now the whole idea isn't too bad. Alchemists, Moroi etc etc but somehow the story just drags on for the first three quarters of the book with nothing really happening. Sydney takes the reader on a tour of her life, worries and relationship problems and we get to read between the lines while she, an intelligent young woman, ignores everything important that is going on in front of her.

Now I like Sydney. She is a nice young girl but while trying to be grown up and independent she comes across as insecure and a little naive. So much responsibility and somehow she has young girl problems like never having kissed a guy before. It is pretty flat and boring at times. Of course there are hints of a bigger story to come all the way through the book but it is only towards the end that things take off and you get the satisfaction you deserve for putting up with all the moaning and running around.

I know that if I had read this book I would have given up on it pretty early on. Listening to the audio book, while sometimes hard going, was easier to keep listening as I walked to and from work each day. I have to give the narrator kudos because she does make the whole story that little more interesting with the good job she does on the voices. She really kept me going.

All in all a good sequel but slow and long winded. The action comes at the end after a few weeks hanging around in the life of Sydney. I will check out the third part because I really like Adrian and want to see what happens with him and I am also curious about a few aspects of the ongoing story. Of course I will be going with the audio option for the next part.

143) Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

The Blurb :

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive - this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone's out for blood.

My Review :

I love Richelle's work but there seems to be a lot of it around lately. A new expensive release wasn't on the cards for me but when this popped up on my Audible account I couldn't resist it. Despite not enjoying the Vampire Academy Series as much as Richelle's Succubus series I was really eager to see what kind of story she could build up from the VA leftovers.

Things started off a little slow and I wondered if I had made a mistake bothering with this new series. I kept listening and really started to like Sydney a lot. She is so different to Rose and someone I would love to be friends with. For her alone I kept listening and it worked out it was worth it.

Once the story really started opening up I was hooked. The plot thickened and the story got deep. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters who were taking part in this new spin-off of the Vampire Academy series. It was amazing how different this series has started off even though it is set in the same world and shares the shame characters. I loved the new perspective and found the alchemist side of things more than interesting.

There is obviously still some more surprises to come in this series and I am really looking forward to book two when it comes out. There was a little cliffhanger at the end and quite a few unanswered questions. All in all I think Bloodlines impressed me more than the VA series ever did. I did enjoy Rose's story but somehow Sydney has won me over.

Amazing, worth reading and get a copy for your friends. This is one you can give out as a Christmas present and despite it being aimed at Young Adults it isn't childish and definitely ok for the older reader. Richelle has done a good job and I look forward to getting together with Sydney again.

127) Succubus Revealed by Richelle Mead

The Blurb :

In Georgina Kincaid, succubus and she-demon, #1 New York Times bestselling author Richelle Mead has created one of her most enticing characters. But with a shot at love, and maybe even redemption, is the ultimate seductress finally going soft? Like hell she is. . .

Georgina Kincaid has had an eternity to figure out the opposite sex, but sometimes they still surprise her. Take Seth Mortensen. The man has risked his soul to become Georgina's boyfriend. Still, with Lucifer for a boss, Georgina can't just hang up her killer heels and settle down to domestic bliss. In fact, she's being forced to transfer operations. . .to Las Vegas.

The City of Sin is a dream gig for a succubus, but Georgina's allies are suspicious. Why are the powers-that-be so eager to get her away from Seattle—and from Seth? Georgina is one of Hell's most valuable assets, but if there's any way out of the succubus business she plans to take it—no matter how much roadkill she leaves behind. She just hopes the casualties won't include the one man she's risking everything for. . .

My Thoughts :

The sixth book in the Georgina Kincaid series has been a long time coming. I have been patiently waiting for another look in the life of my favourite succubus and I am glad it has finally come. I hadn't checked but I was pretty sure this was going to be the last in the series. I decided to let myself be surprised but all the way through the book it just felt like the end was coming. I am sad to see Georgina go but Richelle Mead has quite a few other projects going on and a new baby so it was clear that one series had to go.

Nothing was wrong with this book. It was a perfect end to an excellent series. Georgina was stunning as always and Seth behaved as I expected him to. The other characters I have come to know and enjoy throughout the series all played their parts well and the plot was surprising and somehow exactly what I was expecting. I finished this in record time and couldn't get enough.

I have been with Georgina since the beginning and therefore with Richelle as well. This is the series that got her started and it is the one I will always love the most. I can't believe that this is the last book. Every one of the six books in the series have been amazing and always a must buy. Now it is sad to see Georgina's story coming to an end but to what end I will not tell you! Go out and read the series if you haven't already. This is one that isn't to be missed.

17) Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

Blurb -

Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules.

She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir Princess, Lissa. She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri. And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardian to come.

Now the law has finally caught up with Rose- for a crime she didn’t even commit. She’s in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch. She’ll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall her execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.

But the clock on Rose’s life is running out. Rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back… and this time she is truly out of second chances. The big question is, when your life is about saving others, who will save you?

My Thoughts -

Last Sacrifice is the last book in the Vampire Academy series. I got this book on the day of release but have been reading only a few chapters at a time because I wanted to stretch things out a little. I wasn't really ready for this series to be over and needed time to enjoy the last piece of the puzzle and understand what was happening as all the pieces got tied up together in this finale.

An amazing series and a good finish. It was interesting to see how things played out and how Rose managed to get herself out of the mess she was in. I really enjoyed Lissa's part in this book. She went through a lot and it was nice of Rose to show us what was happening. Of course Rose had a few relationship problems to work out with the two men in her life and although I understood her choice I was actually rooting for the other guy ;)

It is hard to say goodbye to Rose. I know there will be a spin-off series coming but I am not sure if she or the other characters will play a huge role in it. I will of course be checking it out because this author is a serious must buy for me. If you have been waiting to read this series in one go or have been putting it off, well now is the time to get into it. You have been missing a huge piece of history in the Urban Paranormal genre and a very well written YA series.

73) Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead

Back at St. Vladimir's it is time for Rose to graduate. After a long and emotional journey to Dimitri's birthplace in Siberia, Rose is happy to be back at the Academy and with her friends. Especially Lissa, who she hopes, despite the rules she has broken, will still be the Moroi she will guard when she becomes a full fledged Guardian. However Rose still yearns for Dimitri and he keeps sending her letters. Can Rose use the information she got in Siberia to free Dimitri from his Strigoi life?

With Lissa's help, Rose hopes to find more information about turning a Strigoi back. It will be hard to get the details they need and yet again the students will have to break a lot of rules. However Rose is determined, even if it means people will get hurt and she may not get the future she dreamed of.

Book five in the Vampire Academy is as suspense filled and addictive as the previous books. I know a lot of you won't have read this yet, so I am not going to give anything away. However what I will tell you is that the story is as thrilling as always, full of twists and surprises as usual and hard to put down.

I will admit I did find this book a little lengthy. There were moments in the story where I thought, 'this would have made a good ending', and wondered why there were still hundreds of pages left. However the cliffhanger that the author leaves the reader perching upon was a perfect, if not horrible, way to end things. What happens next is a story we all have to wait for, again.

All in all this was, like the previous installments, a brilliant read. Rose has grown up but is still the feisty girl we have all come to know and love. It is great to catch up with all the characters, good or bad, and see how well this world is evolving. The story was full of different adventures that all came to a very surprising conclusion. Spirit Bound has a lot happening in it and you won't see it all coming.

While this is aimed at Young Adults this is a series that all ages will enjoy. For the younger reader there is some violence and sex but nothing too over the top or in depth. Actually the author pushes safe sex! So this is a must read for me and I am sure for many more of you out there. If anyone hasn't tried this, or the authors other series, then I highly suggest you do. Richelle Mead sends a breathe of fresh air into every book she writes. She is one of the best Urban Fantasy writers out there and is not to be missed.

38) Succubus Shadows by Richelle Mead

Succubus Georgina Kincaid is immortal, can shape-shift into any human form and can seduce any man she wants. However being a Succubus isn't always as cool as it looks. For instance right now Georgina is helping to plan her ex-boyfriend's wedding and it is hell. She isn't sure what is worse! Seth marrying someone else or that she has to try on bridesmaid dresses?

However Georgina's life has enough distractions to keep her mind off the wedding and one of them is Roman. He is her new roommate and the sexual tension between them is high. Then there is another succubus in town to keep an eye on. Simone is up to something and Georgina wants to know what. Then there is the danger surrounding Georgina. A mysterious force keeps visiting her when she is asleep. She is resisting but at some point she will be too weak and there is no knowing where the force will take her and if she will be able to get back again.

Succubus Shadows is the fifth book in the series and I really have to wonder how the author manages to outdo herself each time. Things get better and better with each book and so far I can't say that there has been a bad one. Every book in the series is a super sexy succubus story filled with mystery and romance.

Dark but delicious there is just enough humour in this series to stop it from being to hard. I really love the characters in this series and over time I have come to care alot for Georgina. This new installment showed more about Georgina's past and I soaked up every little detail. The story had me trapped just as much as my favourite Succubus was and I didn't want to leave her for even one minute. With a small cliffhanger ending I am eager to see what comes next. I hope the wait isn't long because I feel Georgina would also hate to be kept waiting.

If you haven't already had the pleasure of reading any of Richelle Mead's books then I can only highly recommend them. The Succubus series is truly amazing Paranormal Urban Fantasy and her Young Adult series, Vampire Academy, is worth reading if you are young or old. Then there is the very tasty Dark Swan series which is definitely a must read for any Fantasy lover. So make sure you get to know this author soon because she is one of the biggest and best out there at the moment.

186) Immortal: Love Stories With Bite by P.C. Cast & Others

Immortal: Love Stories With Bite is edited by the bestselling author of the House of Night series, P.C. Cast. Seven of the most popular Young Adult Paranormal writers all offer new short stories that prove that when you're immortal, true love really is forever.

Cynthia Leitich Smith starts things off with her tale about a love triangle between a vampire, a ghost and a human girl. Wonderfully written there are a few twists that I didn't see coming. This is an author I have to catch up with again.

The Kristin Cast takes the reins and introduces us to a new kind of vampire. This new kind of vamp is straight out of Greek mythology and can alter space and time. Very fresh and new it was nice to read something by this author without her mother and away from the House of the Night series.

Third up in this anthology was Rachel Caine. Her story is set in the Morganville Vampires world which is one of my favourite Young Adult series. However this was a little disappointing and it didn't quench my need for a new installment. Told from Shane's perspective this quite bland and not as much fun as a full length edition.

Next up was a new author for me. Tanith Lee's contribution was not my favourite in this selection but her story was well written.

Another favourite of mine, Richelle Mead was up next and she brought us something new. Her story about a young vampire on the run from the rest of her kind was certainly different. Nothing at all like her Vampire Academy series and I wished this one was a full length story.

Nancy Holder's story was about a post-apocalyptic New York. Vampires have attacked the city and one best friend is looking for the other. When they finally meet they need to make a choice that may kill them both. Very dramatic this was like reading about a movie.

One of my favourite authors was up next. Rachel Vincent added a story set in her Young Adult series 'Soul Screamers'. I loved the debut novel and was happy to see this small tale her in this collection. Now I am even more eager for the sequel!

Last up was Claudia Gray. This is an author I just got introduced to today (see my previous review) and I didn't expect to be visiting her Evernight series again so soon. However this short story about Patrice was very enlightening. I am looking forward to reading more about Evernight.

Altogether this was a well put together anthology. This really did have some of the best Young Adult authors out there and their was a wide variation when it came to the paranormal elements they wrote about. Of course, as always with anthology's, some stories were weaker than others but all in all this book was a good read.

165) Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

Rose made a promise. She promised that she would kill the man she loves if he was turned Strigoi. Now she has to keep her promise but first she has to find Dimitri before she can see it through. She has no idea where he is but she has left St. Vladimir's Academy and has travelled to Dimitri's home country, Russia. She has no idea where to start looking but it isn't long before she feels sick to the stomach and finds some Strigoi.

Finding Dimitri isn't easy but Rose knows that killing him will be even harder. Then Rose finds herself torn between finding Dimitri and looking after her friend Lissa. Checking in with Lissa isn't hard for Rose but what she keeps seeing isn't all good. Will Rose find what she is looking for and get back to the US in time to help her friends? Can she really kill the man she loves?

Blood Promise is the fourth and by far the best book so far in the Vampire Academy series. The change of scenery made for interesting reading while the challenge facing Rose kept adding suspense all the way through the book. Emotions were high but Rose kept strong and shows the reader that she can be grown up and look after herself. I really liked Rose in this book and I hope it is the start of new older and wiser future guardian.

There were a few twists in this installment and it has left me wondering what could possibly happen next. Will everything work out the way we would like it go? I can't wait for book five and even though the 'Academy' is coming to an end I hope this series can continue to grow into the college years. I hope we will be seeing a lot more of Rose and the other characters that I have come to know and love.

150) Thorn Queen by Richelle Mead

Eugenie Markham is a shaman you can hire to banish creatures from the Otherworld that are troubling you. However since her last battle she is now the queen of the Thorn Land. That may sound glorious but the kingdom isn't in such a great state and there is a prophecy hanging over her head that she definitely doesn't want to see come true. Going back and forth between the human and Otherworld is time consuming and tiring and as a result Eugenie's love life starts to crack. Although that also might have something to do with her boyfriend's ex expecting his baby anyday...

Trying to get in touch with her kingdom and the people living there, Eugenie finds out that some young girls have gone missing from the Otherworld. It seems that this, while not normal, isn't a cause for concern. However Eugenie knows that she has to help her people and find the girls if she can. Following the clues and finding her way in a world she doesn't really want to be a part of, Eugenie is up against something clever and evil that could hurt her in ways that she didn't think possible.

I have been waiting for book two in the Dark Swan series for a year and was extremely worried about not being able to get back into the story after such a long pause. However I didn't need to worry. Going back into Eugenie's world was like visiting an old friend I hadn't seen for a while and catching up with her over coffee.

I absolutely love this series and this is only the second book. I really hope there is a third, fourth, fifth, sixth...well you get it. Why? Well because this is not only original, fast paced and gripping but Eugenie is someone I can relate with and understand.

Another great book from a great author. Wonderfully written, outstanding plot and captivating. Long live the Thorn Queen!

P.S - Because its my Birthday today....the first person to make a comment gets this book! (now we can see who reads the reviews or not hehe) all other comments will have their names added to the monthly giveaway (if you are already subscribed to the newsletter you get a second entry!)

113) Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead

Being bad should be good if you are a succubus. However Georgina Kincaid has been in a horrible mood since her break up with bestselling writer Seth Mortensen and her boss is not amused. So Jerome, Seattle's top demon sends Georgina to Canada to help another demon boss with some troubles he has been having.

Georgina isn't too happy about being lent out to someone else and is even more annoyed that she has to go to Canada. Then things take an interesting turn when Jerome goes missing and Georgina and her demon pals are left without their abilities. Finding Jerome before someone else is made boss is of up most importance but without her life-sucking succubus ways Georgina and Seth realise now is the only chance they will get to get down and dirty.

With the supernatural population of Seattle up against each other and vulnerable Georgina follows the clues she has to find Jerome while keeping her boyfriend Dante sweet and Seth at arms reach. While the sexy succubus manage to find her boss and set him free in time? or will she and Seth reunite?

This fourth book in the Georgina Kincaid series was the best yet. That isn't to say that the first three were bad, I wouldn't have kept up with the series if they were. However this fourth book had alot of feelings and action plus alot of twists and turns. It kept me hooked till the end and left me needing more. Who knew being a succubus could be so fun and interesting! Georgina has me looking at things in a new cool light. I think succubus could be this seasons new vampire...

The small cliffhanger ending has me dying for the next book but unfortunately it isn't out until April 2010!!! (Why do you make us wait so long oh evil book publishers!) Hopefully by then I won't forget about the feeling this book left me with. Georgina, although already so old, grew in this book. She got a little hope for the future and I can't wait to see how her future pans out.
