Q: What could be worse than spending Valentine's Day alone?
A: Spending it with evil zombies!!
Megan Berry is no stranger to heartbreak, but spending Valentine's Day serving other happy couples hot dogs while mourning the loss of her one true love is almost more than even a highly trained Zombie Settler can handle. So when her recently estranged boyfriend, Ethan, texts her asking her to be his Valentine, she ditches her bodyguard and rushes to his side.
But soon, Megan's dreams of chocolates, flowers, and lingering make-up kisses take a turn of the rotted-corpse-and-maggot variety, and Megan fears that her first Valentine's Day with Ethan may be her last.
My Thoughts :
I really enjoyed this series back in the day and this novella has been on my wishlist for a long time. I even got this copy in time for Valentine's Day but didn't read it in time! So I decided it was high time I checked this one out and made a horrible discovery. I have forgotten the general gist of the series...
No worries. The author did a good job of adding some background and bringing up some memories but in the end it wasn't enough and this story felt a little flat because I wasn't sure where this all fit in with the big story and what happened way back then.
It was only a novella and it was a good read. If I hadn't have already read the series I definitely would have tried it after checking this one out. I could also see why I read this series in the first place. It wasn't a bad concept and some of it shone through in this short story.
It's only been three weeks since Annabelle helped solve the murder of Grace Beauchamp, and in the process, she discovered a secret world of invisible, magic-working people who have decided she might have what it takes to join their ranks.
As best as she can determine, Annabelle’s attack by a group of fairies has infected her with paranormal ability she did not previously possess, including being able to mentally move objects and heal wounds. Her new abilities appear to have few negative side effects, aside from creepy dreams. But would that change if she stopped injecting herself with the mystery drug delivered to her by the even more mysterious Tucker, one of the Invisibles?
Leery of trusting criminals with her health, Annabelle wishes she had someone she could talk to about the changes in her life. Enter Hitch, FBI agent and Annabelle's ex, who's back in Donaldsonville on an off-the-books investigation. Hitch suspects that there's a government-funded illegal lab that’s developing a controversial fairy-killing spray that could adversely affect the existence of every living thing in the delta—including humans. And Hitch and Annabelle will have to find a way to work together if they're going to find a way to shut it down.
My Review :
I am a huge fan of Stacey Jay's YA work and when I saw she was writing an adult series I couldn't wait to read it. When I found out the debut, Dead on the Delta, was about faeries I was a little bummed. I am not a huge fan of faery stories and had to admit I wasn't looking forward to the book anymore. However I did like what Stacey had done with the typical faery stereotype. Making them into mosquito-sized fairies with poisonous bites that drive humans insane wasn't what I was expecting and I couldn't wait for the sequel.
So it was no surprise that this second book, Blood on the Bayou, went onto my 'to be released' wishlist and was pre-ordered as soon as it was available. I did a little happy dance when it made its way onto my Kindle and couldn't wait to dive into the interesting world the author has created. Once I got there though I was confused. I remembered Annabelle very well and her cat is unforgettable. However there was so much I had forgotten. Despite the author doing her best to refresh my memory I wish I had had time to read the first book again.
Once I found myself a little better re-acquainted with the land I managed to relax a little into the story. It was a good plot and I found myself getting a little hooked. Annabelle is a nice character and her romances and sexual interests aside I do like her attitude a lot. Her taste in men is not to be questioned but the amount of them is. I had a hard time keeping up with who was who and what had happened between her and each one. The little soap opera that is Annabelle's love life needs to be, imho, toned down in future books.
So did I enjoy this one? I am still a little on the fence. I like the concept and Annabelle. Her friends and the plot a good and strong. The faery aspect doesn't bother me too much. Something however made me find reading this book hard work. The writing style may just be the problem but it might be the complexity of the situation Annabelle is in. I also have a feeling that there are some tiny little details I am missing or overseeing. Another read through the first two books may be needed.
Definitely a super addition to the Paranormal Urban Fantasy genre. This series could turn out to be a favourite of mine. The cliffhanger at the end and the many unanswered questions and possible directions the series could go is enough to make me come back for more. I am extremely curious to see what happens next and how the author continues things. There are things implied and suggested but what takes place is yet to be seen and despite my reservations I am going to check it out.

Suddenly her already bumpy relationship with Cane turns even rockier, and even the most trust-worthy friends become suspects. Annabelle’s life is imploding: between relationship drama, a heartbreaking murder investigation, Breeze-crazed drug runners, and a few too many rum and Cokes, Annabelle is a woman on the run—from her past, toward her future, and into the arms of a darkness waiting just for her. . . .
My Thoughts :
I am not a fairy lover. Yes I have read some fairy based books but usually there are other supernaturals about to take the edge off things. I try and keep clear of the fairy books but if one of my favourite authors writes a fairy type book then I will at least give it the benefit of the doubt and try it. So after loving everything Stacey Jay has written about zombies in her young adult books I couldn't resist giving Dead on the Delta a try. Fairies or no fairies.
Nice and different, Stacey Jay has taken the fairy world that you have come to know, and maybe love, and changed it dramatically and in a good way. I loved the unique take on the one paranormal I have never really felt happy about reading. This wasn't really all about them and they were in no position to take over and glamour everyone. They are little mosquito like pests . Nice!
The plot was good as well. Once I got used to Annabelle I started to like her. She may be a little weird in a strange and alcoholic way but I really can't wait to read more about her. The writing style was totally different to the authors previous YA novels, which was to be expected, but I did have some trouble keeping up now and again.
A new original series with a few minor flaws this looks like a series I could really get into. I am pretty sure that I will be getting the sequel as soon as it comes out instead of waiting. It has a lot going for it and I want to be there for the ride.

Author Stacey Jay has been a guest on Amberkatze's Book Blog not once but twice! So when I heard she had a new book coming out I invited her back to the blog. However she was a little busy and suggested I interview Karen, after all it is her story being told in Stacey's new book.
Karen is a freshman at Dead High and is very excited about her first book coming out. MY SO CALLED DEATH is about Karen's death and first adventure as a zombie. Amber - Welcome to Amberkatze's Book Blog! It is great to have you here as a guest! Could you start things off by introducing yourself to my readers?
Karen -Hey! Thanks for having me! Well, I'm a freshman at DEAD High--a high school for Death Challenged kids (aka zombies). I'm also a former flier for my human school's cheer leading squad, and an up-and-coming solver of major crimes against the Undead.
Amber - You recently became a zombie. How are you feeling about that whole life changing experience?
Karen -The dark circles are a pain, I'm not going to lie, but make-up has come a long way in the past decade. There are tons of excellent concealers and creme blushes that help give Undead skin a healthy glow. Other than that, my life has been pretty much the same. Except for the brain-eating (animal brains only!) and the boarding school and the hideous school uniforms, of course.
Amber - You are now at Dead High? What is the difference between Dead High and a normal High school?
Karen -We have a lot of zombie-specific classes, like "Make-up Secrets of Morticians" and "Zombie Poetry." There is a LOT of zombie poetry. Something about being Undead brings out the angst in people, I guess. And brains are the only food offered in our cafeteria. I don't know if I'll ever get used to that. I miss chicken-fried-steak like you wouldn't believe.
Amber - What made you decide to get your story published in the book 'MY SO CALLED DEATH'?
Karen -I figured it was time someone told the truth about what it was like to be Undead. I'm so sick of all the movies with the moaning, groaning, shuffling zombie stereotypes. Being a zombie is nothing like that. As long as we remember to eat our animal brains, we feel and act almost like normal people. Except...deader.
Amber - What was it like working with the author Stacey Jay? Did you two always get along? Or did you sometimes have problems when it comes to putting your words on paper?
Karen -Stacey Jay was pretty cool to work with. She's old--like thirty-two or something--which was kind of a pain because she would act like my mom and tell me to finish my homework before we IM-ed anymore, but she's basically solid. She told my story truthfully and didn't pull any punches with the gross stuff. I like that. I think it's a common misconception that girls who like sparkles and unicorns and happy ever afters can't also enjoy a story featuring zombies and giant, flesh-eating maggots.
Amber - What is next? Do you have more stories to tell? Will Stacey be helping you?
Karen - I'm currently on probation at school for the first book--violating the super secret zombie code and all that--but I'm working to convince the Powers That Be that the DEAD high story needs to be told. I'm dying to spill all the new gossip so...we'll see!
Amber - If you could go back in time and change one thing that happened in your life, what would you change?
Karen - I would eat more chocolate. Like, TONS more chocolate. Zombies can't eat chocolate; it messes with our digestion. Chocolate is probably what I miss most about being alive, though I wouldn't change being Undead. I'm pretty happy as a zombie.
Amber - How do you relax? Do you have any hobbies?
Karen - My friends and I do spa nights at the dorm and give each other mani-pedis and oatmeal facials--oatmeal is great for dead skin. I find that very relaxing. And my hobbies include fighting crime and solving murders. (I had to find something as exciting as cheerleading since cheering is considered a high-risk activity for the Undead and forbidden at DEAD High.)
Amber - What kind of music do you like listening to? Are there any zombie bands?
Karen -There are TONS of zombie bands, some of them even well-known in the human world since stagelights are kind to Undead flesh. Two of my favorites are The Resurrectionists and the Scatterbrains.
Amber - What books do you enjoy reading? Do you have any favourite authors/series?
Karen - I like reading non-fiction and true-crime stories. I want to be an FBI agent or something when I'm older, so I figure I'd better get used to invading the sick and twisting hallways of the crimial mind.
Amber - What TV series or films are you hooked on at the moment?
Karen - I'm hooked on watching reruns of the Alias series. My roomate and I ordered it from Netflix. I love the action and intrigue! I totally want to be a zombie Sydney Bristow.
Amber - I know you are already a zombie, but if you could be any other paranormal creature, what would you be and why?
Karen - A unicorn. I love sparkly, pretty things and you could seriously mess up some bad guys with that horn.

It is the most fabulous cheer leader pyramid ever and Karen Vera is on the top enjoying the attention. Unfortunately some stupid guy brings her alot of unwanted attention and the pyramid collapses. Before Karen has time to take in what has happened, she is lying on the pavement looking disgustingly dead.
However death is not the end for Karen. She learns that she is a genetically undead zombie. Freakishly alive without a pulse she is sent off to DEAD high, a boarding school for the 'death challenged'. But death isn't the only challenge for Karen in her new school. Her roommate hates her, she has to eat animal brains to stay in shape, nobody thinks she is cool and worst of all someone is attacking students and harvesting their brains!
Although not everything is bad. A new BFF is helping her find out if the gorgeous Gavin is the brain stealer. Cos she doesn't want to be seen dead with him if he is the one sending the students to certain zombie death.
I really enjoyed Stay Jay's previous zombie books about Megan Berry so My So Called Death was a must buy for me. Undead Much? and You Are So Undead to Me had me giggling and eager for more. This new book from the zombie loving author was no different and I am glad I didn't wait around to get my hands on a copy.
This book is aimed at young adults but the title, cover and blurb were just too good to pass up on. Not enough books in the paranormal genre characterise zombies as a good and fun topic so I love what Stacey Jay has done to these paranormal outcasts. Slightly different to the Zombie Settler series this book managed to have all the elements I have come to enjoy from the author but it had a new and fresh feel to it.
If you like reading young adult and like a little laugh but need a little mystery then you can't go wrong with this read. I am really looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next and I hope she sticks to zombies. Although I would be interested in seeing what this author could do with something more adult I am happy with the YA content too. Give this a try yourself or gift it to a daughter, niece or some other young adult who likes a bit of paranormal. This zombie world deathly dangerous but totally fun.

WEIRD STUFF AND ZOMBIES ON ICE
Hey Amberkatze Readers!
When I’m asked to guest blog, I have to admit I get anxious. The inevitable “what to blog” about stressing hits hard. My glamorous mom-writer life is really very, very boring. I spend a lot of time changing diapers, feeding small people, cleaning up messes, and building elaborate block structures for my one year old to rip apart. Then there’s all the sitting on my butt typing with the roar of the never-ending laundry in the background. I mean, what could I possibly have to talk about that would be at all interesting to you—the blog reading audience? You with your fabulous lives that are no doubt much more interesting than anything happening in Stacey Jay land? By the time I sit down to actually write the blog, I’m drowning in a hot, sloppy mess of angst.
Like…right now, I’m a wreck. Really. This is what happens when you ask a fiction writer to write something that’s not pretend. (My own blog doesn’t count. You people who hang with me over there know it’s all weird pictures of me cooking zombie cupcakes in my candy corn pajamas and crap like that.)
So, I’m just going to pretend to interview myself and talk about some stuff. That sound okay? (If not, you don’t have to keep reading. That’s part of the beauty of blogging )
Q: So, self, what’s up with UNDEAD MUCH? Book 2 in the Megan Berry, Zombie Settler series?
A: I honestly think UNDEAD MUCH? (January 21st, 2010) is my best work to date (young adult or adult novel) and I’m so excited to share it with readers. It’s got everything I love in a book—romance, zombies, mystery, a love triangle, big secrets, hot sloppy angst (which I enjoy reading about more than experiencing it personally), and more zombies. On ice.
Q: Zombies on ice? For real?
A: Yes, zombies on ice. For real. I won’t give away plot points by telling you how the zombies get on the ice or what they do there (though I can assure you it does not in any way resemble ballroom dancing or an Olympic sport), but I had a blast writing that particular scene. Being a huge fan of mixing the silly and the scary, I dove into the slippery drama with both hands, fingers flying—I told you it was hard to make sitting on your butt typing sound exciting—chortling with glee to be creating a ridiculous and horrific literary combo never before read by man (or woman).
Q: Your glee was short-lived wasn’t it?
A: Yeah. It was. I found out that the Chicago Zombie people (http://chicagozombie.com/) do a Zombies on Ice event every year. The first one was in 2008—after I’d already written the scene in UNDEAD MUCH?—but that doesn’t matter. The book isn’t on the shelves yet, but those Chicago Zombies were on the ice in December 2008 and again in 2009. So they win. If this were a contest. Which it wasn’t…but yeah, if it had been, they would be the winners. I pass the figurative bloody, disembodied arm trophy over to them.
Q: Okay…anything else you’d like to share?
A: Um…no. I’ll just slink back over to the weirdness of my own blog and make some zombie cupcakes or something. (I’m also thinking of staging a pomegranate murder in my kitchen and taking pictures. Have you seen the way pomegranates splatter red juice everywhere when you cut into them? It’s crazy! Grizzly fruit murder. Perfect for a blog entry from a woman who has a new zombie book coming out.)
And…end weirdness. And ice zombies.

Megan Berry had a normal life until her power to settle the Undead returned. Then her best friend tried to kill her and totally ruined Homecoming by using black magic to raise zombies. However things aren't all that bad. Megan did manage to get a place on the pom squad and a gorgeous boyfriend. So every cloud, or in this case zombie attack, does have a silver lining.
So normal isn't exactly how Megan would describe her life anymore and things are just about to get even weirder. Super-strong zombies, an Undead hottie who won't Settle and a cheerleader vs. Pom squad war are just a few of the problems Megan is facing. Throw in some family secrets that could see Megan going to Settler prison for life and this sixteen-year-old has more worries than any normal teenager should have.
Undead Much? is the zombie filled sequel to You Are So Undead to Me. When I read the first book in this series I was totally sucked into the concept of a 'Zombie Settler' and what they did. This time around I got totally grabbed by the continuation and expansion of such a great unique idea.
Just as fun as the first book, Undead Much? sees Megan growing into her Settler abilities as well as finding out more about herself. The normality of being a teenager and dealing with all those feelings isn't lost on Megan but it is hard for her to find time to deal with them when zombies are trying to kill you. However I am sure that alot of Young Adult readers will be able to connect with Megan, Zombies or not.
This series has got some really likable characters. Megan and Ethan are two people I would love to be friends with and the new edition Cliff is definitely someone I want to hear from again. I am actually starting to like Monica a bit more and I hope she continues to grow into bigger character.
The story this time around was well thought out and kept me guessing till the end and kept to the fresh and unique taste it had last time. This series really is a great edition to the Young Adult Paranormal genre and is on par with Mari Mancusi and Heather Brewer. This is a series I am adding to my must read list.
Undead Much? isn't due out till January 2010 but until then make sure you catch up with and get to know Megan in You Are So Undead To Me.
