61) Black Spring by Christina Henry

The Blurb :

A former Agent of death, Madeline Black now has everything to live for, most importantly, her unborn child. But Chicago has become ground zero in a struggle between ancient creatures, and only Maddy can stop the carnage…

The mayor of Chicago has announced a plan to round up the city’s supernatural beings and put them in camps. With her due date looming, Maddy’s best move would be to lay low for a while. But not everyone is willing to respect her privacy. Hounded by tentacled monsters, a rogue shapeshifter, and a tenacious blogger, Maddy turns to her most powerful ally, her uncle Daharan, only to find him missing.

Just when it seems like things can’t get any worse, Maddy gets an invitation in the mail—to Lucifer’s wedding. Turns out everyone has been invited, friends and enemies alike. And with that kind of guest list, it’s highly unlikely there will be a happily ever after.

My Thoughts :

When I finally got the chance to pick up my Kindle over the weekend I noticed it had done something weird to the order of the books in my To Be Read folder.  So imagine my surprise when I saw this book on the first page.  I was sure I read this already and was ready to delete it but then after reading the first chapter I wanted to kick myself!  I hadn't read this one! I had pre-ordered it and totally forgot about it! And it is the last part in the series!

I read this in record time.  It wasn't as in-depth and wild as the previous few books in the series and I managed to follow things easily and therefore read quicker.  Black Spring was all about tying up the loose ends and giving Maddy a worthwhile ending.  Both were achieved and their was much rejoicing! Actually it was nice to have it all end and be able to say goodbye Maddy.  I have enjoyed her story and the wonderful concept of the series but it was time to let her go.

There is no need to go into details about the book because I am sure there are still some people out there who haven't read this last piece of the puzzle and there may even be some of you who will now decide to give the series a go because it is complete.  I will say that it is definitely worth reading and is one of the better Paranormal Urban Fantasy series out there.  Great ideas, good storyline and super characters.  Lots of action, amazing twists and turns and of course the author allows her leading lady to get pregnant which is something that doesn't usually happen.

If you haven't given this series a go then now you have the chance to read it all in one go.  If I ever have nothing to read (haha) then this is definitely one of the series I would have on my list to read again.  I liked Maddy a lot and I will miss her but wish her all the best!

148) Black Heart by Christina Henry

The Blurb :

As a former Agent of Death, Madeline Black is no stranger to witnessing violent ends. But being the one to cause them is an entirely different story…

Despite her having saved Chicago from a vampire invasion, the Agency wants to get Maddy off their payroll—permanently. With the deadly Retrievers hot on her trail, she has no choice but to trust Nathaniel to port her to safety. But even the exotic and dangerous world that she winds up in is not as peaceful as she would have hoped. Caught in a turf war between a group of fae and a disturbingly familiar foe, Maddy soon discovers that the twisted plots of her grandfather, Lucifer, and his brothers extend even into this unknown realm.

Now, with enemies gathering on all sides, Maddy’s fate is looking darker than ever. And to protect her unborn son from her adversaries, she may have to tap into a power she hoped never to access…

My Thoughts :

Confusing and full of surprises this is the fifth part in the Black Wings series.  Oh Wow!  I am not sure what to say about this one.  I have very mixed feelings about the whole story and the book was very busy!  There were parts I didn't like very much and others I tolerated as I could see where the story was going.  However there were also parts I really liked, even loved.

The book starts as it means to go on.  fast-paced and action filled.  They is hardly a moment for Maddy to breathe let alone eat and sleep.  Sometimes this left me feeling just as exhausted as Maddy and it was a little tedious that throughout the book that the reader was reminded constantly at how much Maddy was being punished physically.  Despite that it was nice to be back in Maddy's world even if it is chaotic.  I like the concept and the general storyline and I don't think I could give up now and not find out what all this is leading up to.

However I have to say this book frustrated me.  I wanted things to continue on from the last book but it didn't start off like that.  The first half of the book throws Maddy and the reader into a completely different place and goes off on an arc that made me want to give up on the book altogether.  It was only when it became apparent that this arc was only going to run around and join up with the 'real' plot that I relaxed and enjoyed things.  It was a tricky way of getting Maddy where she was supposed to be and it was this trick that leaves me unsure if I can say I love the book or not.

Black Heart wasn't what I expected but at least by the end I felt progress was made.  It might not be enough for some readers but after the first half of the book showed a distinct advancement I felt a little easier.  I didn't want to see Maddy's 'condition' drawing out for books on end.  However I know there are details in the long running plot that need to be dealt with and can't wait for months or years.  It was nice to see that the author obviously feels the same way.

Now I wonder how things will continue.  How will the author keep this series going and for how long?  I really want to have a conclusion soon.  I am just not sure how long I want this story to be drawn out.  Also I am really interested to see what the author will do with all the paths she has already laid down.  I am sure it will make for great reading but I don't know if Maddy or I can take too much more of the relentless attacks and fighting.

A super Paranormal Urban Fantasy series that really is worth reading.  Not only do you have angels and vampires but there is a gargoyle and some other weird and wonderful creatures.  A brilliant read but make sure you have the time and patience for a complicated but satisfying read.

33) Black City by Christina Henry

The Blurb :

When Maddy finally killed her father, Azazel, she thought his depraved experiment died with him. But now Chicago has been infested with vampires immune to the effects of the sun, and the bloodbath is worse than she could have ever imagined. While the Agency refuses to interfere with other supernatural courts, Maddy is determined to do everything within her power to save her city—wings or no wings.

But when the leader of the vampires requests that she turn herself in or risk more deaths, Maddy becomes a target for the very people she’s trying to save. Left with no other choice, she turns to Lucifer, the one creature who has the power to help her. But her grandfather’s aid has always come at a price…

My Thoughts :

This is the fifth book in the series and I am extremely glad I read the previous insallment only a month ago. I don't think I would have known what was going on if I had left a long break between the two books. Things seem to be happening fast and furious in this series with the only long breaks in the story being the amount of time between them being published. Where one book ends the next one instantly begins and if you can't remember what was going on when you last left Maddy then you are really stuck.

With so much going on it is hard to keep up sometimes and I wonder how the characters manage. I was left confused about who was related to who and why by the end of this book and although the twists and turns are interesting and keep me reading I do have a little bit of a headache from wrapping my head around the mass of problems, solutions and the fights inbetween.

I felt like the author was rushing along with this book and trying to fit too much in. Maybe the next book is the last and things need to tied up? I can only wonder if and when Maddy's baby will be born. If the story keeps moving along at this pace then we will need another thirty books to cover the pregnancy. However if the next installment makes a huge leap we could be seeing a baby next time around. I wonder what is in stall for the reader in this respect.

While this is great Paranromal Urban Fantasy this time around I didn't find the story well thought out enough. Things were, as I mentioned, rushed and all over the place. The plot seemed to go where ever it wanted to with lots of elements going on at once that needed attention. I am however keeping on with this series. I am curious to see if Maddy manages to have this baby and how. Will the author think up some interesting way of the baby arriving early? Will it be the normal 9 months etc etc. These questions and more will keep me reading because you don't usually have pregnant heroines in this genre.

15) Black Lament by Christina Henry

The Blurb :

As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black deals with loss every day. But when tragedy touches her own life, Maddy will have to find the strength within to carry on…

Devastated and grieving, Maddy unexpectedly finds hope with the discovery that she is pregnant. But Maddy’s joy is short lived when Lucifer informs her that he wants the baby, hoping to draw on the combined power of two of his bloodlines. Maddy is determined that her grandfather will never have her child, but she’s not sure what she can do to stop him.

Being pregnant is stressful enough, but Maddy suddenly finds herself at odds with the Agency—forbidden from meddling in the affairs of the supernatural courts. When a few of her soul collections go awry, Maddy begins to suspect that the Agency wants to terminate her employment. They should know by now that she isn’t the sort to give up without a fight…

My Thoughts :

I have been following this series since it started and due to my own cutbacks in buying books I added this fourth installment in the Black Wings series to my wishlist instead of buying it when it released. Happy to get a copy for Christmas I was eager to get started on it and managed to curl up with it this weekend. I wish I had pre-ordered it and read it when it released.

Black Wings #4 is an amazing read. I know I enjoyed the first three books and my decision to not buy this one on release has been a stupid one. My only consolation is that now I only have to wait a couple of weeks until book five comes out. It is already on pre-order!

What was so good? Action and the concept. Yes I may have praised the concept before but this time it seemed somehow even better. Maybe the books I have been reading lately just haven't been unique enough and made this one stand out more but I have to say I loved the whole mix of angels, demons, werewolves, fae and so on. Added to the variety of Paranormals was also a super set of characters with some lovely banter. The situations the group come across aren't exactly laughable but the wit and humour thrown in now and again really does take the edge off things. I hate things to be too serious all the time.

Something that I thought that also made this book special was the fact that Maddy's husband wasn't somehow magically brought back to life (hopefully it will stay that way). Yes it sucks that she lost someone close to her but I have read too many series where an important character is killed off only to be 'alive' again in the next book.

Another special twist to this series is Maddy's pregnancy. Not a lot of series go down the 'having a baby' route and I have to admire the author for actually going this way with her character. It is a refreshing change and hopefully one that will add some interesting aspects to the fifth book when it releases later on this month.

A series worth reading and a good example of how Paranormal Urban Fantasy should be written. I highly recommend this series and look forward to reading the next installment!

41) Black Howl by Christina Henry

The Blurb :

Something is wrong with the souls of Chicago's dead. Ghosts are walking the streets, and Agent of Death Madeline Black's exasperating boss wants her to figure out why. And while work is bad enough, Maddy has a plethora of personal problems, too. Original.

My Thoughts :

Christina Henry's Madeline Black series was one of the most refreshing new Urban Paranormals to be released in the last few years. At some point the new releases are just a hash-up of the usual plots, clichés and supernatural elements and it is wonderful when an author gets an original idea and goes with it. This series is one of those little gems and I was eager to see where this third book would take the story.

I needed a little time to get myself back into the world of Madeline Black. This is where Lucifer is a frequent visitor and big yucky spiders spring up to leave their goo all over the place. Once I had got my bearings I found myself engrossed in what was another unique plot and fantastic story. While some of the ideas seemed a little 'out there' it made for great reading and I loved following the events that led to Madeline once again saving the day.

Madeline is however on the verge of turning into one of those leading ladies who keeps acquiring magical abilities with each book. I hope this isn't a look at things to come. Especially with that amazing cliffhanger ending that could see Madeline getting more powers. However one could argue that being related to Lucifer comes with all the powers available. A nice idea but I hope it doesn't go to Madeline's head.

The gang of misfits that Madeline hangs out with are actually pretty cool. I love the little hungry gargoyle Beezle who usually wants some kind of sweet treat for his valuable information. Samiel would be more enjoyable if anyone really paid attention to him. Yes he can't speak but he only seems to be noticed when they need an extra person to fight off all the badies that keep coming out of the woodwork.

This third book is quite an emotional roller coaster ride for Madeline and all things considered she holds up very well. As mentioned, the ending was pretty cool, but I was expecting it. I really am looking forward to seeing how that plays out. I have to say I appreciated the author not going into explicit details when Madeline finally made it to bed with someone. I am seriously fed up of the long and extravagant sex scenes and it was nice to not have pages wasted in this book. We know how the birds and bees work and don't really need more info than that. Thank you Christina for sparing us.

All in all this was a super third book in the series and a lot happened. However it wasn't my favourite in the series so far. Lots of action, depth and humour but it was maybe just too much. I do expect that the fourth book will be my favourite. I seriously can't wait for that one and really hope that the author delivers us a nice new aspect to the series.

Worth checking out if you love Jeaniene Frost, Jaye Wells or Jenna Black. Definitely give this cool new series a go. You won't be disappointed.

Author Interview with Christina Henry (Includes Contest)

There have been a few new releases out this week that I had on pre-order. One of them is Black Howl by Christina Henry.

The series so far has impressed me a lot and I can't wait to delve back into the life of Madeline Black.

If you have already had the joy of reading this series or haven't come across it yet, I hope you enjoy this interview with the author and will take the time to enter this weeks contest.

Black Howl is the third book in the series and I can only recommend you try the series sometime soon!

Enjoy!

----------

Amber - Welcome back to Amberkatze's Book Blog! It is great to have you here again as a guest! Could you start things off by telling us a little about your third book in the Madeline Black series, Black Howl?

Christina - Ghosts are popping up all over Chicago, and these ghosts have not had their deaths foreseen by the Agency. That means that they are outside of the natural order, and something big and bad is lurking around. As an added complication, Maddy's friend Wade (the alpha of the werewolf pack from BLACK NIGHT) has been kidnapped and Jude's asked Maddy to help find him. Oh, and Lucifer has been hanging around trying to trap Maddy into becoming the heir to his kingdom, which Maddy is definitely not interested in.

Amber - How did you come up with the idea for Black Howl?

Christina - In BLACK NIGHT we spent a lot of time away from Chicago in Amarantha's faerie court. I wanted more of the third book to take place in the city and for readers to feel more connected to the Agency again. The fae and the fallen are still a large part of BLACK HOWL, of course - once Maddy takes on a problem she has a lot of trouble getting rid of it!

Amber - Was it easier to write the third book or has it become harder as things progress?

Christina - In a certain sense it does get easier. You start to know the characters and the world, and you can better predict how a character would respond in certain situations. In another sense it's harder because you want to keep things fresh for the reader.

Amber - If the series was going to be made into a TV series or Film, who would you like to see playing the lead characters?

Christina - Michael Fassbender has always been Gabriel in my head, and I would love Richard Armitage for J.B. I'm not sure who would play Maddy, though. An unknown actress would probably be better for her. That way you would be able to see Maddy for herself and not as a character you'd seen in another film.

Amber - How do you pick the names for your characters? Do they have any special meanings?

Christina - No, I just pick names that I like. I'm boring that way :)

Amber - Will there be more books in the series? How long would you like to see things continue for Madeline?

Christina - There will be at least six books in the series. After that we will see how much more story there is to tell.

Amber - How much say do you have in the book publishing process? Eg. Do you get to pick the cover? The Title?

Christina - I do pick the title for each book. For the cover, my editor and I discuss some ideas and then we see what the cover artist comes up with. I think Kris Keller has done an incredible job on the covers!

Amber - How long on average does it take you to write a book? Do you have a process you follow? or do you just start at page one and see what happens?

Christina - It takes a few months for me to write the first draft. I usually have a rough idea of what I want to happen in the book, but since I write chronologically the books do tend to take surprise turns on me. I start with the first scene and then just seen how things unfold.

Amber - Are you working on any other projects you can tell us about? Any plans to do the YA thing?

Christina - I have a couple of ideas for another series, but I need to find time to write it! I'm supposed to write two BLACK WINGS books this year and that is taking up a lot of time.

I don't plan on writing for young adults at this time. I think it takes an amazing talent to write good YA and I don't think I have that ability.

Amber - Are you a full time writer or do you have a day job? If yes, How do you divide your time?

Christina - I am a full time writer - at least when my son is at school. When he's home I'm a full-time mom. So I try to get a lot of writing done during the school day!

Amber - What have you been listening, reading and watching lately? Any recommendations?

Christina - The last movie I saw and loved was DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME, a Chinese fantasy-mystery starring Andy Lau. I'm currently reading Bill Bryson's AT HOME, which is just full of fascinating trivia about human history.

I have several episodes of GRIMM and ONCE UPON A TIME sitting in my DVR right now. Someday soon I'll get caught up!

Amber - Who has been your biggest inspiration in life?

Christina - J.R.R. Tolkien who was the first author who inspired me to write. I read THE LORD OF THE RINGS when I was twelve and decided to be a writer then and there.

Amber - If you could live anywhere in the world. Where would you live?

Christina - I live in Chicago, and I love it here. I wouldn't pass up living in Italy, though!

Amber - Thanks for stopping by again!

Christina - Thank you so much for having me!

103) Black Night by Christina Henry (Contest Reminder Included!)

The Blurb :

Madeline Black is an Agent of death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her...

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy's being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves-her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle-have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer's granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

My Review :

When I read Black Wings last year I was extremely impressed with another new debut that managed to come up with a fresh unique concept. However, as always, I worried that the sequel may not live up to my expectations and just totally suck. Luckily in the case of this series there was no need to worry. Black Night rocked just as much as its predecessor and had me hooked from the start.

There were however faeries involved. I don't like them very much but I can put up with them to a certain extent. I did wonder why another supernatural element was introduced to the series but it worked and it made for good reading so I am not going to complain about it. However what I will have a little moan about is the lack of work! Maddy didn't get much 'real' work done and I missed that aspect. Maybe next time?

All in all this was a brilliant read and a great sequel. This series looks like it is going to hold its own and is definitely worth checking out if you are a lover of the genre. With great characters and a lovely mix of paranormal aspects there is a little something for everyone. I hope the third book is as strong as the previous two and that the story keeps growing into the great series I think it could become.

Enter the Christin Henry Contest and win a copy of Black Night!

Author Interview & Contest with Christina Henry!!!

My Guest this week is author Christina Henry! Her debut novel Black Wings was an amazing read and the second part in the series, Black Night, is already out! My pre-order arrived on my Kindle already ;)

So get to know Christina in the interview below and then enter this weeks contest and maybe you will win a copy of the new release, Black Night!

---------------------------

Amber - Welcome to Amberkatze's Book Blog! It is great to have you here as a guest! Could you start things off by telling us a little about your new release Black Night?

Christina - Well, things are not going great for Maddy. Lucifer is manipulating her into a diplomatic mission to the faerie court, and her oh-so-annoying unwanted fiancé Nathaniel is coming along. Unfortunately, the last ambassador was beheaded in front of the entire court for a breach of etiquette and as we know, Maddy has a lot of trouble keeping her mouth shut, especially when she ought to!

Amber - Black Night is the second book in the Black Wings Series. What can we expect from the new installment and what do we have to watch out for?

Christina – I think there is a lot more action and adventure in this book. I really wanted to write a book that reflected the things that I enjoy in urban fantasy. The pace is pretty much nonstop, but I had so much fun writing it that way.

Amber - If your books were going to be made into a film or TV series, who could you see playing the lead roles?

Christina – I have always pictured Michael Fassbender as Gabriel. He’s probably the only character who looks like a real person in my head. When I first heard Gabriel’s voice it was Michael Fassbender’s voice.

I have a lot of trouble seeing any particular actress as Maddy, mostly because Maddy is a little bit overweight and every actress seems to be super-skinny!

I’d like Richard Armitage as J.B. He’s so good at walking that line between good and bad onscreen.

Amber - Will there be more books in the series? Are you working on anything else?

Christina – Right now there will be six books in the series. If it seems like there is more story to tell after six then there may be more.

Amber - Is there a paranormal creature you just don't like, and would never use in your books?

Christina – I like reading other author’s stories about vampires but I don’t feel that I have a lot to add in that direction, so I don’t really see vampires becoming a big part of Maddy’s world.

Amber - What paranormal creatures are you dying to fit into a story but you haven't managed to fit in yet?

Christina – I have some ideas that include other paranormal creatures, but since I don’t want Maddy’s world to get too crowded I will probably confine them to short stories for now.

Amber - A lot of authors are writing now in both adult and YA genres. Have you considered writing a YA book?

Christina – I think it takes real skill to write a great YA novel and I don’t think that I have that skill. I love to read so many YA authors and I’m just in awe of how they can make a book accessible to kids and adults.

Amber - What have you been reading and watching lately?

Christina – I don’t watch a ton of TV but I did watch “Game of Thrones” on HBO and loved it. It’s the first time I’ve actually committed to watching a TV show every week since “Deadwood” got cancelled (still annoyed about that…grrrr).

I just finished reading Janet Evanovich’s “Smokin’ Seventeen” and now I’m reading a book called “The Male Brain” by Louann Brizendine. I like to switch back and forth between fiction and nonfiction.

Amber - What's your favorite paranormal movie of all time?

Christina – “Night of the Living Dead”, with “The Host” and “The Frighteners” coming in at a close second and third.

Amber - And to finish, If you could be any famous person, alive or dead, who would you be? and why?

Christina – I always think that famous people’s lives are probably not as great as they look from a distance, so I think I’ll just stick to being me :)

Amber - Thanks for visiting Amberkatze's Book Blog again!

Christin - Thanks so much for having me!
