My Thoughts :
Deacon Chalk, Occult Bounty Hunter, is a special hard-ass of a guy who I love to read about. He is the guy you always want on your side and not one you want to mess with. He has seen and done things that you can't even imagine which makes reading the books about him well worth checking out. No holds barred the series is great Paranormal Urban Fantasy.
This collection of short stories is a nice addition to the series and an interesting selection of information about the man himself. The author also stars in some of the stories and it is fun to how the writer ties up everything in the Deacon universe to fit in with his own life.
Some of the stories may, if you are a fan of the man, be ones you have come across before as guest posts on various blogs. Otherwise there is a nice selection of new original stories that will delight anyone who has been enjoying the series so far.
I am not a huge fan of anthologies or short stories but James R. Tuck does a nice job of putting this one together and obviously made the time to make this reader friendly for the fans by introducing each piece and explaining where it came from and why it was written.
Well worth checking out but don't expect the full length goodness that you are used to in the series so far. Deacon Chalk is too huge in so many ways and can't be expected to fit into such small stories.

Culvert City doesn't have a "bad side" of town, every square inch of the place is strychnine nasty and terminal as cancer.

Good people who live here too.

My Thoughts :
I am not a huge fan of anthologies or short stories but this author has impressed me with this Deacon Chalk series and so I was willing to give this a try. Not supernatural and not fantasy, this novella is actually practically an anthology of very short stories. Paragraphs in some cases. It makes for quick and entertaining read but it left me feeling disappointed.
The stories are good and for such short tales they are well worth reading but I was expecting more. Something different? I am not sure but this wasn't what I imagined as I read this book. It is hard to write more about this book without giving something away because there really isn't that much content. Quick, to the point and well written this is over before it really begins.
Give me Deacon Chalk! I am happy to see this author can write something else and has other work out there but this isn't a series that will keep me happy. Sorry!

My Thoughts :
There isn't much to say about this short story. It is nothing like the Deacon Chalk series, a story by this author I have been really enjoying. That Way Lies Madness is more science fiction than supernatural and it is quite mad as the title suggests.
As short stories go it isn't bad. However this wasn't really my cup of tea. While I love a good Sci-fi TV series or movie I am not a big fan of books in the genre and so this one failed to pique my interest much. I wish I could have liked it more but the style and content were just not my thing.
However I did see some of the goodness shine through in the story. There were emotions, action and a twist. The refreshing unhappy ending was welcomed by me as it does get boring to find everyone live happy ever after in every book you read. So this book managed to earn some stars from me despite my lack of enthusiasm for the story in general.
I am sure anyone who likes the 'Lovecraftian' style then they will surely like this short read. Even fans of James R. Tuck may enjoy seeing that else the author has on offer.

My Thoughts :
Before I start my review I have to apologise to the author and publisher of this book. I got this ARC in the post a long time ago. I can't even remember when but as a physical book it landed on my bookshelf and it was forgotten about for a very long time. I can't believe I left this one of my shelf unread for so long but that is what happens when you have a Kindle. So I am sorry this review is coming way after the book made it into my hands and after the book released. Note to anyone interested : Send me Kindle books!
I have read the previous Deacon Chalk books and novellas and was interested in seeing how the series would continue to develop. It didn't take me long to get back into the weird paranormal world the author has dreamt up for this series and within a few chapters I was used to the swearing, blood and general hard-ass angle that shines through in this series.
It sounds very action movie like and it is. Guns are a common occurence which means fighting also takes up a lot of the pages in this book. You may think that there couldn't possibily be a story to all this but there actually is and it is a very good one. Well laid out, the plot, isn't half bad. In fact if it wasn't for the plot, and the characters involved with it, I most likely wouldn't have ever kept up with this series. I am actually eager to see what happens to these people and what happens next. Also the weird and wonderful paranormal world this series offers is just too good to miss.
In regards to this third installment, all I can say is 'WOW'! There were some things that I didn't see coming and the twists they brought with them surprised me so much that I can't wait for book number four. I didn't expect so much of the events that took place and that made this book, for me, a very special read. I get fed up of 'knowing' what is about to happen because things are so predictable but James R. Tuck is keeping me on my toes and I love it!
You may be put off by the whole guns and blood stuff but if you are a true Paranormal Fantasy lover then you will have to give this series a try. If you have already had the pleasure of meeting Deacon Chalk : Occult Bounty Hunter, then you will know that he isn't just fighting, he has a heart and he has feelings. There is a lot more to him than meets the eye and he is the guy you want on your side.
His new release Blood & Silver is now out and is the sequel to Blood & Bullets. The series about Deacon Chalk : Occult Bounty Hunter is certainly Bloody! Action packed and hardcore kick-ass all the way this is a series that isn't scared to pull out some guns and take down the bad paranormals!

My Thoughts :
Blood and Silver has been on my pile of books to read for a while now but with so many other books on that pile it didn't make it to the top till this week. I have been eagerly awaiting this second full length novel in the Deacon Chalk series after thoroughly enjoying the two novellas in the series. While I enjoyed the first book in the series, Blood and Bullets, it was a little too rough for my liking. I was interested in seeing if this sequel kept to the same violent theme.
Deacon has actually turned into a really nice guy this time around and it was good to see him become a little more human. Although that doesn't change the fact that I would definitely want to be on Deacon's side in a fight because he is completely bad ass! He also seems to be good at taking in strays and getting involved in situations he could have just kept his nose out of. Or in his case, gun!
During all the non-stop action we get to see lots and lots of were creatures. They came in a variety of sizes, from big to small, and in all kinds of strange and wonderful forms. I think the were chickens were maybe a little over the top but it did make me giggle. All those weird creatures did make for great reading. It was a nice concept and a broadening of the paranormal elements the author already established in his previous stories about Deacon.
It is nice to have another male writer on the scene and it is wonderful to have one with such an amazing imagination. However it seems this series is maybe just a little too male orientated for me. While the content is a fast paced paranormal filled delight it is also extremely gritty, dark and full of violence. I am not new to this rodeo and have read my fair share of violent stories. However I found some of this book slightly overwhelming and kept thinking this is aimed at guys and not so much for the girls.
All in all I liked the story, characters and concept. What I still have a problem with is the amount of violence, the over the top gun/weapon info and continuous action. I have to admit I did enjoy the novellas more than the full length novels and despite all of this I am not giving up on the series. I still want more Deacon. It's like a horrible accident, you should just keep going and not watch but you find yourself stopping and taking the time to check it out.

THE ONCE AND FUTURE MENAGERIE OF JAMES R. TUCK
Amber hit me with a great idea for inspiration for this guest blog and I am eternally grateful. Creatures I would like to bring into my books.
Oh damn. This is going to get interesting.
Okay, to cover the intro, I have already worked with zombies in my short story "He Stopped Loving Her Today" from One Buck Horror. In the Deacon Chalk books (The Deaconverse) I dealt with a Nosferatu in THAT THING AT THE ZOO. Novel 1, BLOOD AND BULLETS, gave us vampires, Were-Spiders, a cursed immortal, a Were-Gorilla, and a family of Tengu who own a drive thru sushi joint. SPIDER'S LULLABY let me bring you killer ghost spiders, a 1500 year old dragon living as a Russian hitman, a sorcerous Yakuza assassin, and a Japanese demon.
Book 2, BLOOD AND SILVER, which hits August 7th we really explore lycanthropy in the Deaconverse and things get wild indeed. (As a side note, I have turned in novella 3, CIRCUS OF BLOOD, and novel 3, BLOOD AND MAGICK. I got to explore witchcraft and magick in the Deaconverse.)
In various Deacon short stories the main man has taken on a Filipino vampire, a Boogey man, and a Wendigo.
I have a sci fi/horror novelette on submission where I put one of the elder gods of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos in outer space. That was fun.
I have covered a lot of ground in the supernatural world, and I have been able to put my own twist on it all. I gave vampires a new origin, set a more realistic set of parameters for lycanthropy, and did some great things with demons and witches. So what in the world is left?
Everything.
I have a story I am writing now (not a Deacon novel) that stars another elder god of the Lovecraft Mythos. It is an almost straight horror book, heavy on the blood, the guts, and the gore. I have a weird western starring a survivor of the Donner Party massacre and some truly terrifying desert monsters. I also have a strange psuedo-film noir/hardboiled detective gonzo horror with a giant worm and a cult.
In the future Deacon books these are things you will see: Chupacabra, Hunter/Killer cyborgs from an alternate future, Dragonslayers, a family of demons who look like the scariest clowns you have ever seen, unicorns (no I am not kidding), demon hands that use murdered people like puppets, a doppleganger, Nephilim (Human and Angel offspring), the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a coked-up Elven Prince, a goblin, The Beast of Revelation, skinhead Werewolves, Pamarindo's, Were-Pomeranians, The Wyrm That Dieth Not, and probably a wannabe Antichrist.
Buckle up y'all, it's gonna be a helluva ride.

My Thoughts :
After enjoying the prequel novella to the Deacon Chalk series, That Thing in the Zoo, and also the debut book, Blood and Bullets, I couldn't resist reading this short story too.
Spider's Lullaby takes place between the first book and the upcoming second book, Blood and Silver and gives away little of the story so far. It is definitely a great look into the world of Deacon Chalk Occult Bounty Hunter and you get a good feel for the type of storyteller James R. Tuck is and how the series works. I have to applaud the author for writing such an exciting novella. Most writers rush short stories and miss out details but James R. Tuck managed, again, to make a short tale enjoyable.
Action is a main feature in this intense series and even though I had a few reservations after reading Blood and Bullets I am really warming up to Deacon and his crew since reading That Thing in the Zoo and Spider's Lullaby. However I have to say I am not happy with the subject matter this time around. Ewww Spiders!
With lots of detail and depth this is going to be one of those series you can really get your teeth stuck into. With an interesting and strong male lead character this series feels like Harry Dresden but much darker. I am looking forward to reading the second book and can't wait to see where things take Deacon and James. Well worth reading!
Shredding monsters is his stock and trade. He sniffs them out, tracks them down, and corners them. End of story. But when the tables are turned, expect the unexpected.
Knowing his enemy is a rule Deacon Chalk swears by. But he's never seen anything like whatever is leaving the Atlanta Zoo's most dangerous predators bloodless, skinned, and hanging high in the treetops. And he's only got until sunrise to keep it from turning the entire city into a slaughterhouse.
Now Deacon is in zoo lockdown with a handful of staffers to save. His zookeeper backup has more guts than monster-hunting experience. And the only chance Deacon has to run this thing to holy ground is to unleash his darkest, most uncontrollable instincts.
My Thoughts :
A few weeks ago I read the first book in this new series about Deacon Chalk. Blood and Bullets left me a little confused and I wasn't sure if I completely liked it or not. However this novella has tipped the scales. If the second book in the series is more like this prequel then I am going to love this series.
This short story made for great reading. There wasn't time for all the little things that annoyed me in Blood and Bullets and I found myself thoroughly enjoying this novella. It was to the point and full of action. There were gruesome scenes and a really nice plot. I loved it and only wish the author had done such a good job on his debut book.
So Deacon Chalk is on my must read list. I really need to check out the second book mainly because of this prequel. We have a new guy on the block with a special original series that could be the best new thing.

Amber - Welcome to Amberkatze's Book Blog! It is great to have you here again as a guest! Could you start things off by telling us a little about your debut book, Blood and Bullets?
James - Thank you for having me!
BLOOD AND BULLETS is the first book in the Deacon Chalk: Occult Bounty Hunter series. It follows the story of a man (Deacon) who hunts monsters for a living. One of them sets him up and tries to kill him which sends him on a long night of tracking down who it was and trying to kill them right back. It's a dark and bloody ride that pushes him to the brink. I tried my best to give the reader an action-packed book that didn't pull back. It's like a summer blockbuster action/horror movie.
Amber - How did you come up with the idea for Blood and Bullets? Was it a long process or did it just come to you?
James - Well, the character of Deacon Chalk came to me one day. He kind of stepped into my mind completely ready to kick some monster ass. I also had the basis of the plot that became BLOOD AND BULLETS, although in the writing that had a lot of changes occur.
My motivation for actually writing a novel came from reading. I love urban fantasy. It is tied with crime fiction as being my absolute favorite genre. I love the action mixed with the scares that urban fantasy has. However, I do find that a lot of books in UF tend to pull back at the last minute. To soften the horror that would occur if monsters were real in the world. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to push right to the edge and then some.
Amber - Deacon Chalk is a kick-ass character. How did he come into existence? Is he based on someone or is he more of a superhero you would like to be?
James - Well there is a lot of me in Deacon. He is the closest character to how I think. I also drew on a lot of my life to write him. No I never hunted monsters and my family is still (thankfully) whole, intact, and alive, but he still shares a lot of my thought process. But Deacon is THE alpha male that you find in UF and sometimes that makes him a little bull-headed and stubborn. Plus, because of his past, his first reaction to almost any situation is violence. And he has a death wish. He misses his family and wants nothing more than to die and go be with them, but being Catholic, he can't take his own life. So instead, he throws himself at monsters waiting for the day that he is just a little bit too slow, a little bit not strong enough and then he can see them again. For all of the simplicity of his view on monsters (Kill them.), he is a complicated, damaged character... which is what I think someon who would make a life killing monsters would be.
Amber - In Blood and Bullets you go into depth about quite a few of the weapons Deacon uses. Did you research all this or was it something you know from experience?
James - I am a die-hard gun fan. I love them. The fun of going to the range and shooting is hard to describe if you haven't ever done it. And I think guns are beautiful. Not all of them, but there is some serious artistry that goes into the design of some firearms. I also have a permit and carry a gun every day. Mostly because I am old and have a family as well as a home and business that I have to protect. Yes I live a peaceful life, but the world is filled with those who don't. If our paths intersect, I like being prepared.
Amber - If Blood and Bullets was going to be made into a TV series or Film, who would you like to see playing the main characters?
James - BLOOD AND BULLETS would make a GREAT movie! Deacon Chalk would be played by the unreplaceable Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He is the man I picture when I think of Deacon. Robert DeNiro for Father Mulcahy. Edward Norton could swing Larson. Scarlett Johansson for Kat. I would be tempted to cast Natalie Portman for Tiff, but she doesn't feel quite right. Charlotte is Angela Bassett. Amber Heard is Blair after her turn in Drive Angry. Longinus could go to Clive Owen or John Barrowman and I would be happy. And Appollonia is Eva Green. She was the bright spot in a show called Camelot that was on starz. I watched her rendition of Morgan Le Fey and it was like watching my character on the screen.
Amber - How do you pick the names for your characters? Do they have any special meanings?
James - Deacon Chalk came from always liking the word Deacon as a name and then pairing it with cool sounding words that had a tenuous connection to the supernatural. The second I spoke the two words together, they became a name and the character stepped out. Father Mulcahy is a nod to the show MASH which I loved growing up. Larson is a nod to a radio show I used to listen to hosted by a man named Bob Larson. It was a crazy show with witches and demons and all kinds of things going on. I think Charlotte's name is an obvious nod, but you gotta read the book to see what I mean. Every one else, their names just fit the character.
Amber - Despite Deacon's bad ass attitude he sometimes shows a soft side. Will we see more of that in future books?
James - Well, it is a hard, hard life in the Deaconverse, and as I said before, Deacon is a damaged hero. He isn't inhuman though. We will see more of the softer side in future books, and a bit more humor also. The series starts on this particular night because finally after five years of hunting monsters Deacon has healed enough for there to be a change. There are characters introduced in this book that will bring that change out. But be warned...no one is safe. No one.
Amber - When will we see more of Deacon? Are you working on any other projects?
James - At this point readers can find both THAT THING AT THE ZOO which is a .99 cent e-novella set about six months prior to the events in BLOOD AND BULLETS. There will be another e-novella this summer called SPIDER'S LULLABY and then book two hits in August. It's called BLOOD AND SILVER and we get to see more about how lycanthropy works in the Deaconverse. It will be crazy.
The series will continue. It is contracted for three novels and three e-novellas and I have plans for the next ten books.
The list of future projects is huge. You will see me dabble in some crime fiction as well as paranormal romance, more urban fantasy, a touch of sword and sorcery and I even have two YA books in my wheelhouse. All that is still to come and should be a blast!
Amber - What is it like being the new author on the block? Lots of parties? ;)
James - I love it! Everyone has been really nice and receptive. I have met some great folks. Authors, bloggers, and fans. It is awesome. Some of my fellow writers have been truly great. Faith Hunter, Jeanne C. Stein, Jenna Maclaine, Annabel Joseph, and Adrienne Wilder read my book and loved it. They were all kind enough to give me blurbs.
Amber - How about being one of the only males in a female dominated genre? Do you guys stick together?
James - Yes, we have each others backs. lol. Well, I have become good friends with J.F. Lewis. He is awesome. If you aren't reading his books then shame on you!. Larry Correia is super awesome, and Jonathan Maberry was very nice. Matt R. Jones of the Hollywoood Vampires series is about one of the nicest folks you could meet. And David B. Coe and S. A. Swann were awesome to panel with at Dragoncon.
Amber - Did you always wanted to be an author? Why did you pick the Paranormal Urban Fantasy genre?
James - The writing bug didn't hit me until 2010. I had dabbled before that, but 2010 is when I got serious and wrote BLOOD AND BULLETS. I chose Urban Fantasy because I love it so much.
Amber - In Blood and Bullets you mention a few other characters from other books in the genre. What authors/books do you like reading?
James - Oh man. I am a huge reader. Huge. I read a lot. I pretty evenly split between crime and Urban Fantasy, with some other stuff thrown in for fun. My must buy list includes Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series, The Dresden Files, and Lilith Saintcrow's Jill Kismet series. I am sad to see it go, even though the last book kicked complete ass.
Amber - What have you been watching lately? What is your favourite paranormal series/film?
James - There are some shows on series record on the Tuck family DVR. The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural are on there. Doctor Who tops the list. Major Who love going on here. Hell, I have a Dalek tattooed under my arm! The Closer is a favorite along with Project Runway. I am also burning through 24 on netflix at a rapid pace. And that is about all the time I can squeak away from my writing.
Amber - What about music? Is there any music that influences your writing? Any bands/songs in particular that you listened to while writing Blood and Bullets?
James - I love country, blues, and late eighties cock rock. For those of you who are unaware, cock rock is also known as hair metal and consists of bands like Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, and Cinderella. Country is what I grew up on and what I listen to the most, but my love is the blues. I listen to a lot of blues writing about Deacon. They are blues books, probably because of the nature of Deacon and his past.
Amber - If you could be any paranormal creature, what would you be and why?
James - Hmmmm. I would be a Were-unicorn just because that would rock my face off. lol.
