2) Dark Duets by Various Authors

My Thoughts :

Dark duets is exactly what the title suggests.  A collection of dark stories written by duets of authors.  I am not a huge anthology lover but this book caught my eye as well as some of the authors with stories inside.  To be honest the Charlaine Harris and Rachel Caine combination was the one that made me want to try this book.

Each story is dark and some are really not tales you want to read before bed.  Stephen King lovers will enjoy these novellas and paranormal lovers will also like the weird and twisted supernatural elements in some of the short stories.  The collection isn't anything spectacular but there are some stories that will stick with you.  I can't say I enjoyed it enough to give it a glowing review but it was a nice read and a few of the stories were well worth my time.

Below is a list of the stories and the authors.  The first four stick in my mind as being some of the better in the collection and there are a few in the middle of the book that also caught me by surprise.  I wouldn't rush to check out any of the unknown authors because this book was mostly horror.  However it was nice to read something totally different to my usual reads and I am sure a lot of people would find some new authors to add to their wish list.

Do not read before going to sleep and maybe read this collection in a fully lit place.  Nice anthology with some very well known authors.  I wonder how they managed to write the stories together and make them so well thought out and written.

My Review :

Oh dear! The day has come! A Dark-Hunter novel that I am not going to rave about. It must be the first time in all the twenty books in the series that I actually contemplated giving up. The first time I didn't really care for the characters and definitely the first time I wished I hadn't bothered buying the new release as soon as possible.

Before I continue with my review I have to say that I am very disappointed in the way the Dark-Hunter books are being released these days. I know the author has earned her hardback status but for us huge fans it is a high cost to pay to read the new Dark-Hunter novel when it is released. Then after standing by the author for years you get this hard back which is buffed up with larger text and spacing to make it look bigger. I was not impressed. I am actually wondering if I can send the book back...

Back to the review. We all know and love Sherrilyn's typical Dark-Hunter story. Gorgeous Dark-Hunter meets stunning girl and they somehow manage to fall in love blah blah blah. It is the story the author weaves with the Greek mythology that keeps us all coming back for more. Acheron, Nick, Simi and all the other regulars always makes the new Dark-Hunter novel worth reading. The setting, the concept and the writing style always satisfies and leaves you wanting more. Retribution failed for me in all these areas.

While these books are fantasy this story was just a little over the top for me. There was a huge lack of the usual mythology and a sudden turn around to Native American Mythology. It didn't interest me at all and I have to say I found it extremely confusing. On the other hand it was nice to finally read about Jess but I kept thinking he was a girl all the time with that silly name. Despite the heavy cowboy talk he didn't win me over like the previous Dark-Hunters and he felt like one of those sleazy men you avoid in a crowded bar. Abigail was nice enough but I didn't know what to think of her and she came across as a dumb bimbo (cover also shows her as blonde but I am sure she is described as having black hair). They were definitely my least favourite couple so far in the series.

The writing style failed slightly. Long winded explanations of the mythology was hard to follow. Not many of the favourite characters showed up and they were all busy somewhere else with babies or having them. Bleh! Actually the long running story that has linked the series together was missing and this twentieth book could have stood alone completely. Nick popped in for the briefest of moments and Sin played a small part. The others that came along were characters I had forgotten about and obviously wanted to see the light of day again. Oh and the sex! Backseat trapped in a car with wasps attacking? Seriously? After all these years that is all you can come up with Sherrilyn?

I hate giving this a bad review but Retribution is the first time that a Dark-Hunter novel hasn't reached my expectations or made me go wow! I actually sped read the last few chapters because I knew I would give up if I didn't. Fans may be excited about this book and love it but for me personally it was a let down. An expensive end to a long wait.

The only redeeming factor in this book was the bonus story at the end. Full of Acheron, Simi and Artemis we get to witness the birth of Ash's child. The short story also made me eager to keep reading the series because it looks like things are going to get pretty exciting. I will stick by this series because there is too much to love about it and I can't let go. This was the one bad egg in a pack of twenty and hopefully it will be the only one. I can forgive and forget but please next time give us the good stuff!

59) Born of Shadows by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My Review -

Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the authors who first introduced me to the Paranormal Romance genre with her famous Dark-Hunter series. When I was asked to read and review her League books a while back I was a little sceptical. However I enjoyed them and wondered if there would ever be more. I was delighted to see #4 in the series appear. Born of Shadows takes us back to the League series and does it in style.

Think of the Dark-Hunters in space travelling from world to world with different species and new rules. That is the League series and it is as thrilling as all the books Sherrilyn has written. You fall in love with the characters and find yourself interested in the outcome. The plot always thickens, twists and turns but you always know what to expect from a Kenyon book. Everything always comes together in the end and along the way you enjoy the ride.

If Sherrilyn writes more League books I would certainly read them. Any fan of the author should at least try one of these books. The story from each book in the series does interlink in some ways and like the Dark-Hunter world all the characters seem to know each other. That said you don't you really don't need to read these books in order. They stand alone and are strong enough by themselves.

Well worth reading and definitely enjoyable. I hope the League come back sometime soon. I am not a huge Sci-fi reader but this series is just too cool to miss out on.

52) Invincible by Sherrilyn Kenyon

My Review -

Invincible is the second installment to the Dark-Hunter spin off young adult series, The Chronicles of Nick. I was extremely impressed with the first book, Infinity, and couldn't wait to see what happened next. Unfortunately the Kindle version was unavailable to me in Europe. Boo! And the hardback version is pretty heavy to carry around and also expensive. Double Boo! So I ended up listening to this one via Audible. Have credits...will use!

So listening to this was a little weird at first. I am so used to reading Sherrilyn's work and even though the narrator did an amazing job it did take me a while to get used to things. However once I got into the story it was hard not to stop listening. I found myself taking the long route home from work just so I could listen to a little bit more.

The story picks up from exactly where we left Nick in the first book and the adventure, mayhem and action doesn't stop till the end. With a great storyline and a nice mix of characters this is another winning series. Powerful, fun and with a little mystery thrown in this story grabs you and won't let go. Finding out so much about Nick is a pleasure and honour and I am pretty sure I will have to read the whole Dark Hunter series again from beginning to end to put things into perspective. I have to admit some of the events are a little confusing in the whole DK timeline/ongoing story of things.

Another superb book from a great author, Invincible wasn't, in my opinion, as good as Infinity but it was a fantastic and special read that all fans will enjoy. If you haven't read anything about the Dark-Hunters yet then I have to recommend starting with these chronicles. The writer has done things a little backwards but I am sure it will all come together in the end. If you have the chance to start at the beginning, then you should!

Technically Young Adult I don't believe this is actually aimed at Young Adult readers. This is a series for Dark-Hunter fans and a basic background story to one of the favourite characters from Sherrilyn's famous series. So don't be put off by the 'teenagers'. There is enough adult going on and coming up.

121) No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon

What Did I Think? -

Amazing as always! There has never been a Dark-Hunter book that I didn't like. Actually I doubt very much that Sherrilyn Kenyon could even write a bad Dark-Hunter book! This series is just getting better and better. The background, on-going story is getting very interesting and I can't wait to see what happens next. As for the main characters this time around, they were lovely. I really liked Sam the Amazon and Dev the were-bear was yummy.

Now the wait starts for the next book. I wish there would be more of the Dark-Hunters more often. There is nothing else to say except make sure you read this series and enjoy this new addition to the club!

79) Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Like any normal teenager, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything. Streetwise, tough and full of answers he is know for his sarcasm and back chat. Then his world is changed forever when some of his friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious man, Nick is suddenly a part of the Dark-Hunter world where vampires and weres are just a every day occurrence.

There isn't time for Nick to really learn all the rules and secrets because he and his fellow students are being attacked by flesh-eating undead. Nick knows that he is in danger and not the kind of danger that comes from wearing the wrong kind of clothes to school. Under pressure to keep the peace between his new life and his mother, Nick finds himself trying to save the people of New Orleans while trying not to get grounded, suspended or killed.

Wow! Sherrilyn you are a goddess! Whatever possessed her to write a new series in the Dark-Hunter world about Nick is beyond me but she did good! I was a little concerned how the writer would pull off a young adult novel when in all her previous books the characters usually end up naked within the first few chapters. However there was no need for my to worry. This was a well written, adventurous novel that had me hooked from the first paragraph.

Nick is a character that any fan of the Dark-Hunters has come to know and love. This insight to his teenage years and how he got together with the sexy guys is just pure genius. I don't want to give anything away because this should all be a surprise but if you are a fan of the Dark-Hunters then get this book asap! You will kick yourself otherwise.

Where as I have to admit that I am not a big fan of the spin off Dream-Hunter series, the Chronicles of Nick already, after one book, have me convinced that this was the right way for the writer to go. Sure there were a couple of points that I had to question but all in all this was superbly written didn't last long enough. I certainly can't wait for the second part, Invincible, when it is due out early next year.

Beg, borrow or steal a copy of this. It was worth the wait, cost and time spent reading it. Kudos to the author for coming up with another great series within the addictive Dark-Hunter world and for keeping it young adult. Oh and if you feel too old for young adult then get over it. This is a must read for any Dark-Hunter lover.

53) Born of Ice by Sherrilyn Kenyon

In the Ichidian Universe it is the League and its ruthless assassins who rule over all. Devyn Kell thought that being in service to the League was a good thing until he realised that they were happier to kill then save. Going against them he is now someone who makes sure planets get the weapons, medicine and supplies they need to get through another day. He doesn't take no for an answer and he gets what he wants.

Alix Garran hasn't had a good life so far and her future isn't looking so good either. Forced to sign on to work for Devyn as a System’s Engineer, she is surprised to find he isn't what she expected. He is someone she can respect, trust and most of all fall in love with. So Alix’s mission to save her family becomes harder and harder to achieve and suddenly Devyn finds himself with some old enemies on his tail. Will they both be able to fight together or will they both die alone.

This third and I believe last book in the League series was just as good as the previous two books. I quickly got used to the League world again and managed to pick up on who was who. This third book revolves around the son of the characters from book one and also has quite a few characters from book two. All in all this is basically a book that ties up all the loose ends but could also stand alone like the other two books.

Anyone who enjoys the Dark-Hunter series, also by Sherrilyn Kenyon, will also appreciate these three books. The concept is very similar in content but the setting is more futuristic and less complicated. I am not really a sci-fi fan when it comes to book reading but this trilogy was very exciting and it impressed me alot. Quite romance based it was fun to see how the author got this pair together. Sherrilyn Kenyon has a knack of basically writing the same plot of guy meets girl and lives happily ever after over and over again. However each time the story is magically unique and even more enjoyable than the last.

It is definitely worth picking up these books. Of course I would never have read them if it wasn't for the author behind them but now I wish there were a few more League books to entertain me. So with this League snack in between Dark-Hunter books now devoured I go back to patiently waiting for the next delight DH delight!

10) Born of Fire by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Syn was raised as a tech-thief which led to him uncovering a truth that put his life in danger. Destroying the evidence would have been a good solution but instead it has stayed hidden and Syn has been on the run ever since. Now older and wiser he is an assassin who doesn't let anyone threaten him.

Shahara Dagan is a bounty hunter and most likely one of the best in the universe. Syn is just another job, a way to make money to keep her siblings alive. Unfortunately there is a problem. It seems Syn is a close friend of her brother and sister. He is a friend who has helped out them out on many occasions. On one side she wants to bring the assassin in and have him pay for his crimes but on the other hand she knows she will be upsetting alot of people close to her.

So Shahara saves him and then both of their lives are on the line. The only hope Shahara and Syn have is to find the evidence he buried long ago. Running for their lives they both stick close together and try and save each other from being hunted down and killed.

This second book in The League series surprised me as much as Born of Night. After reading the first book I really thought it was a fluke. I don't usually read Sci-Fi type fantasy so this was just a one off? Now I believe it all lies in the wonderful way Sherrilyn Kenyon writes.

Born of Fire was as brilliant a story as Born of Night was. Great characters, good plot and nice twists that kept things exciting. Adventure with just the right amount of romance this story was both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I loved it all.

Now I am looking forward to curling up with the third book, Born of Ice. Sherrilyn's Dark-Hunter series is certainly my favourite series by this amazing author but The League is better than the Dream-Hunters. Don't forget to check this series out if you are a Kenyon fan. You are missing out on something special if you haven't read The League!

3) The Dark-Hunters, Vol. 1 by Sherrilyn Kenyon

I am a huge Sherrilyn Kenyon fan and her Dark-Hunter series is one of the first series I read in the Paranormal genre. So when I saw there was going to be a graphic novel released featuring the Dark-Hunters, I knew I needed to check it out. Volume one starts off by telling the story you may have already read in Night Pleasures. We meet Amanda and Kyrian and get a full introduction to the world of the Dark-hunters. The story, like the full sized novel, is amazing. It reminded me of those few hours I spent with Night Pleasures and how I read as I walking down the street because I just couldn't stop!

As a graphic novel this was some what different to my previous experiences. Firstly this is in the traditional Japanese Manga format which means reading from the back to the front of the book and Right to Left. I was slightly confused at first and thought I would never get used to the back to front reading. However within pages I was too engrossed in the story to care.

The illustrations are lovely. I can't find any real fault with them at all. The pocket book size of the book makes this easier to carry around and read than the usual full A4 size graphic novels. The comic is only black and white but the lack of colour doesn't really matter to the content which was great all the way through.

Now I have added the next volume to my wishlist and hope I will get a copy as soon as it is released. I am really looking forward to reading the rest of Amanda and Kyrian's story again and love seeing it in pictures.

If you are a Dark-Hunter fan then this is definitely something you want to buy and treasure. If you haven't already read anything in the Dark-Hunter series then I feel sorry for you ;) Oh and maybe you want to rectify that and read one of the novels or try this Manga version.

215) Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

The League is full of ruthless assassins. Expertly trained and highly valued they rule the Ichidian Universe. Command Assassin Nykyrian Quikiades left the League and has been hunted by them ever since. Many have tried to kill him but nobody has been able to stop him.

Now Nykyrian works as an assassin for hire. His current mission is to protect Kiara Zamir, who has become a target because of her well know father. Kiara's life has become more dangerous than ever before and she has to learn to trust the same kind of man who killed her mother and left her for dead all those years ago. However the only way both of them can survive is to look after each other. If they don't they will both end up dead.

I am a huge fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series so I was really happy to be offered her new series to review. The League isn't actually that new and as the author points out at the beginning this series is really the first thing she produced and is just now getting released for all to read. But is it worth it?

The beginning of this book caught me straight off but then quickly lost me again when I realised this was more Sci-fi than paranormal. However there was the usual Kenyon taste to the story so I kept up for a few more chapters. I have to admit that at one point I was ready to give up but instead I decided to take a break. After all, this is one of the authors who got me into the Paranormal genre in the first place and I needed to give her the beneift of the doubt.

So I went back to this book today and after a few more chapters of still figuring out who was who and why, I really got into it. By the time I got to the last hundred pages I was very glad that I have the next two books in the series already here waiting for me. Sure this isn't the Dark-Hunters and it is no where as good as Sherrilyn's famous series but it does has something.

With the strong characters, romance and action this is a suspense filled read till the end. Sure the first half of the book seemed a little confusing but once you get into the new world and adjust, things get alot better, fast. Definitely worth reading if you are a Kenyon fan and certainly check this out if you like a little Sci-fi but nothing too deep.

I am looking forward to reading the next two books Born of Fire and Born of Ice. Thanks for another great reading experience Sherrilyn!

155) Bad Moon Rising by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Fang Kattalakis is a Were-Hunter and is devoted to his family. He is the brother of two of the most powerful members of the Omegrion the ruling council that enforces the laws of the lyncanthropes. There are other Weres but the species don't like to mix. So when Fang falls for a member of the Bear clan he knows he has to try and forget her.

Aimee is also falling for Fang. She can't stop thinking about him and runs to his aid when he needs her. They know they can never be together but when war breaks out they both have to choose sides. So when Aimee is accused of betraying her people there is only one person who believes in her. Fang goes against everything to save the woman he loves just like she did for him.

Another Dark-Hunter book, another enjoyable read. Nineteen books into the series it doesn't look like the series will ever come to an end. To be honest...I don't care! If Sherrilyn keeps writing them I will keep reading them and if she keeps writing them well she can keep going forever as far as I am concerned.

However there is one downside to this series. Things are started to get complicated. Who is with who? Was that the one who did that? and other questions kept popping into my head as I was reading. With nineteen books and so many characters and events, it is hard to keep track of everything that has happened and how it tangles into the latest story.

A little moan, that is specific to this book, is the lack of Dark-Hunters. This story was more Were-Hunter related and there was a serious lack of the guys we have all come to know and love. They were there, just not present enough for my liking and certainly not out in full force. Although who cares? The series is amazing and there are certainly more books to come. Any fan of the Dark-Hunters will enjoy this latest installment and love finally getting to know more about the Sanctuary and the Bear clan who run it.

If you haven't had the pleasure of trying out this series yet then I suggest you do. This is also a great series to recommend to people who want to try out something paranormal but don't fancy the typical vampire or werewolf angle. Dark-Hunters are unique and out of this world. I wouldn't want to be without them.
