Author Guest Blog : Justin Gustainis

Justin Gustainis is one of my favourite authors.  His books are dark and deliciously paranormal but also have a good dose of humour to take away the edge.  The interesting characters, amazing well thought out plots and unique supernatural concepts have kept me addicted to his work since I came across Black Magic Woman six years ago.

So I am extremely happy to have Justin back on the blog today to help promote the third investigation in the Occult Crimes Unit series, Known Devil.  I hope you all enjoy a little insight to Detective Sergeant Stan Markowski's world by way of a snippet from his shift diary.

Furthermore I hope you will all check out Justin's books.  What else can I say to convince you?  They are stories you will never forget and I am sure you will, like me, crave for more!

--------------------------------

Shift Diary
Detective Sergeant Stan Markowski
Occult Crimes Unit
Scranton Police Department

[Stan Markowski does not keep a diary in the usual sense, recording his thoughts and feelings about the things that happen in his life.  But he does keep a shift diary – an account of the cases he’s dealt with in any given night at work.  He finds that a record of his activities sometimes comes in handy – for testimony in court, or for future investigations]

Wednesday, February 12th

5:30 p.m. Reported for my shift.  Karl arrived a few minutes later [unlike most police officers, Stan does not work according to a fixed time – rather, he reports for work at the first half-hour after sunset.  That means the start and end of his shift keeps changing, but it can’t be helped.  You have to make special accommodations when your partner, Karl Renfer, is a vampire].

6:05 p.m.  Caught complaint of ghost haunting shower in a girls’ dorm, Marywood University.  Spirit of former janitor, always had fantasies of ogling the coeds.  Called in dept. exorcist to lay  geas on the spirit, expelling him from campus.  I suggested that the ghost relocate to one of the strip bars downtown, where nobody cares what he’s looking at.  Seemed to think this was a good idea.  Horny old bastard.

7:42 p.m.  Investigated complaint possible poltergeist activity 934 Keyser Ave.  Turned out to be the family’s three kids taking turns banging furniture around to fool parents into thinking place was haunted.  Family just moved to Scranton from Long Island, kids don’t like it here – hoped to scare Mom & Dad into moving back.  Parents don’t know what we found out, told kids to cut it out or parents would be told.  It’s Scranton, kiddies – get used to it.

9:20 p.m.  Possible hostage situation at O’Malley’s bar, 1338 Linden St.  Turned out to be ogre, who got drunk, busted place up, and grabbed a waitress to avoid being thrown out.  Reasoning with drunk ogre waste of time, but we tried, anyway.  Karl attempted use of vampire influence, but  apparently doesn’t work on ogres.  No help from Sacred Weapons and Tactics team, who were busy across town.  Called in Rachel Procter, dept. Consulting Witch, who told ogre she’d turn him into toad if he didn’t give it up.  Took ogre into custody w/o further incident.  Rachel’s a white witch, and can’t turn anybody into anything, but ogre didn’t know that.  Note to self: send box of candy to Rachel (dark choc cashew clusters) – she doesn’t usually make house calls.

11:40 p.m.  Took our coffee break at Jerry’s Diner, as usual.  Karl likes their Type A plasma, I tolerate dark roast coffee.  Two elves armed with pistols tried to hold up the place.  Took elves into custody, one with broken wrist (Karl doesn’t like having our break interrupted).  Prelim interrogation found elves addicted to Slide, new street drug that can hook supes.  Supernaturals usually immune to human rec drugs – could be some bad shit going down.

2:10 a.m. Stopped at Renfield’s, city’s biggest supe bar.  Spoke to Barney Ghougle, my fave informant – ghouls always know the gossip.  Barney says he’s heard of Slide, but doesn’t know any users.  Bartender Elvira told Karl she thinks local Mafia family may be behind Slide distribution.  Doesn’t sound like Calabrese Family’s style to me, but you never know.

3:07 a.m.  Stopped at Ricardo’s Ristorante, Calabrese Family H.Q.  Talked to Calabrese and his human consigliere, Louis Loquasto.  Both deny involvement in Slide trade, say it’s gang from outside city (branch of Delatasso Family in Philly) responsible.  Delatassos trying to muscle into Scranton rackets, Calabrese vows to keep them out at all costs.  Vampire gang war in Scranton could be imminent – must nip it in the bud, if possible.

4:40 a.m.  Investigated report of riot at Morrie’s, local dance club.  New band played tonight, turns out female bass player is a Siren.  Sang lead on one song, drove male customers bonkers.  Issued citation, warned Siren (Meredith Schwartz from Dunmore, goes by Scar when playing) against singing in front of make ausiwences in future.  Stick to the bass, Meredith – better for everybody.

5:25 a.m.  Sunrise in 45 min.  Told Karl to go home, said I’d stay and finish paperwork.  Long shift tonight.  Too damn long.

7) Known Devil by Justin Gustainis

The Blurb :

My name’s Markowski. I carry a badge. Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.

A new supernatural gang is intent on invading Scranton – as if I didn’t have enough to contend with!

Supernatural gang warfare? Not on my watch!

My Thoughts :

I eagerly await each release from Justin Gustainis. His stories are always deep, dark and witty with great plots and interesting characters. So when I got hold of this third part in the Occult Crimes Unit Investigations, I was itching to read it straight away. However lately I haven't had much time for reading so it wasn't until this week that I finally managed to sit down with the book and get back in touch with Stan Markowski.

Now this series is basically your typical cop procedural with a twist.  The twist being that human Stan works for the Occult Crimes Unit.  He has a vampire partner and a witch on hand to help him with any spells that might need working.  He chases the bad gnomes, werewolves, etc and then goes home before sunrise to catch up with his vampire daughter.  The concept is quite unique and will appeal to anyone who is enjoying Grimm but loves the humour Castle has to offer.  There are some good detecting skills and some of it is even done by the book.  Stan isn't one to play by the rules unless it suits him which is why he always gets the bad guy.

This third installment was all about politics and drugs.  It was a very explosive episode with many casualties with the lovely Stan also taking a knock or two along the way.  The plot was well thought out and interesting to read while the ongoing story evolved with some interesting developments that I feel Stan decided to ignore for his own sanity.   Known Devil didn't, like all the previous Gustainis books, hit five stars this time around.  The wit wasn't good enough and there wasn't much to laugh about.  Usually I can rely on this author to deal out some good one liners and some funny escapades but this time around there was either a serious lack of funny or I was just too tired to appreciate it.

Despite the lack of giggles I really enjoyed this new addition to the series and really look forward to catching up with Stan again.  I hope things advance in this series to a point where Stan gets some fun events in his life *wink wink, nudge nudge* and that there are many more stories about this wonderful supernaturally world that the author has created.

Roll on book number four and anything else the author shares with us.  Great writing with a lot of creative and memorable stories.  A must read for me and a highly recommended suggestion for your next book shopping trip.  Just make sure you start at the beginning of this series.  Starting here at book three may ruin some of the ongoing plot.

Monthly Giveaway Results & Winner Announcement!

The Monthly Giveaway is over and it is time for me to share the results with you guys!

Thanks for all the comments and entries!  I hope you will all come back for the next Monthly Giveaways!  After all it doesn't cost anything to enter!

The poll reults are showing and I can now tell you which book one this months vote!

Play with Fire and Midnight at the Oasis by Justin Gustainis came in last! I could cry about this result! Some of best books I read last month and only 6% of you wanted to win them! Boooo!!!! ;)

Joint third place goes to Pooka In My Pantry by R.L. Naquin and Peach Pies and Alibis by Ellery Adams!  Both amazing reads but with only 10% of the vote each it wasn't enough to win!

The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston came in second place.  I was really hoping this one would win because it was my real, without a doubt, best read last month.  22% of the vote was good but there was another book in the race that just couldn't be beat.

This months winner with an astounding 51% of the vote is Burned by Patricia Briggs.  I knew this book would win and I was right.  I just didn't expect it to get over half of the votes!  Well done!

48) Midnight at the Oasis by Justin Gustainis

The Blurb :

A thrilling new occult investigation from Justin Gustainis, creator of the urban fantasy sleuths Quincy Morris, great-grandson of Dracula’s killer, and his partner, white witch Libby Chastain.

Seeking revenge for the U.S.’s actions in the Middle East, a terrorist cell has conjured an afreet, a deadly djinn that will strike at the very heart of America – unless Morris and Chastain can stop it first.

My Review :

I feel spoilt this month because there are two new Morris & Chastain books out at once! Actually book #4, Play with Fire was released in December but for anyone who missed it (eg. Me) and for people without an e-book reader, this is your chance to read two new installments in one go! Woohoo!

So with Play with Fire done I was eager to move on to Midnight at the Oasis. From the beginning it had a different feeling to it with Libby & Quincey taking quite a while to make their mark on the story. Getting through the first few chapters wasn't hard work, in fact they were enthralling, but I wondered when the pair of Supernatural investigators would get their teeth stuck into things. Who else would I want to see trying to stop a paranormal terrorist plan?

I am really enjoying the added characters that the author has kept weaved into the story over the past couple of books. I find the pair of demons interesting and a conflict of interest while I also have to wonder when they will be pulled back into Hell. The FBI agents add some good solid help to the situations. After all Morris & Chastain do have a lot of 'go to' people but having some help from the FBI really makes a difference. It also means the cases they are getting involved with are being well paid and higher profile.

Justin Gustainis once again managed to send me on a fantastic and exciting paranormal ride. There was, as always, never a dull moment and the author must either take a long time researching his stuff or just manages to make it sound authentic because I wouldn't have queried any of it. The small references to other popular cult media left me giggling. Especially the blood spatter analyst tip of the hat to Dexter.

Now I wait for another exciting action packed adventure with my favourite Paranormal Investigators written by my favourite male writer. Jim Butcher nearly manages to be as cool as Justin Gustainis but Harry Dresden doesn't have a amazing female sidekick. Libby & Quincey rock and I can't wait for more. Must read series!!! Don't miss out on some of the best Paranormal Urban Fantasy that there is!

45) Play With Fire by Justin Gustainis

The Blurb :

A thrilling new occult investigation from Justin Gustainis, creator of the urban fantasy sleuths Quincy Morris, great-grandson of Dracula’s killer, and his partner, white witch Libby Chastain.

Houses of worship are burning all across the U.S., churches, synagogues and mosques alike. Usually while the places are full of people. The fires are initially dismissed as unconnected, random acts of violence, until Morris – freshly released from jail after their last case – and Chastain track down the terrible meaning behind the destruction, and the dark cause the arsonists seek to serve. A race against time ensues, to stop a ritual that will cause the deaths of hundreds... and bring about the end of the world.

My Review :

I am a huge fan of Justin Gustainis and have read and loved all of his books so far. He is a great writer and he always manages to keep me hooked on the story from beginning to end. With so much detail and a surperb amount of knowledge weaved into his books I can't help but be pulled into the story. I can't get enough of his books and was surprised to find out that I managed to miss this fourth part in the Morris and Chastain Investigations series. It seems the book was released on Kindle in December but now both this book and book five, Midnight at the Oasis, are being released this month. Lucky fans!

So what do Libby & Quincey get involved with this time? Something that could mean the end of the world! The suspense is addictive and the story exciting. There wasn't anything I would have changed about this one. Actually it was even better because the new characters that were introduced in the last book also made an appearance in this one. Making it even better. It was nice to have some demons helping out!

I don't want to talk too much about the plot because this is a book you have to read and enjoy without any spoilers. However I can say that this is Paranormal Urban Fantasy at its best. PLaying with Fire is filled to the brim with magic, supernaturals and wit. Justin's books are sometimes just too good to be true and he is my favourite male writer in the genre.

Highly recommend trying this series if you haven't! It is edgy, grown-up and well thought out. If you are already a Libby & Quincey fan then I suggest getting hold of this one asap! You won't regret it!
